I have blue tri shorts and a blue tri shirt. I would be much, much faster if they were red. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Catching up for yesterday's 35' easy run and today's 8 miler. Hey Chris - I'm about 3 weeks behind you in training. Mileage starts to crank up as this will be my first 40+ mile week. While a bit punky at times, the achilles is holding up with ice and strecthing. A bit stiff when I wake up, but it loosens up quickly. Heading to New England on Saturday for a week's vacation at the family lake house so Sunday's 16 mile run will be all hills. No such thing as flat ground in Western Massachusetts. In terms of bike/tri shorts, you get what you pay for. A couple of extra bucks go a long way. The chamois in TYR's and 2XU's higher end tri shorts are very comfortable and I wear them as my usual bike shorts. However, I do have a really nice pair of Castelli cycling bibs and they are all that. Expensive, but worth it if you are in the saddle for a real long ride. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 45 minutes on the drainer after playing bike mechanic. My 16 year old daughter is doing the sprint race when I do my HIM and she decided to use my old bike. I had to get that into condition to ride and make adjustments for her. She is half an inch shorter than me but her legs are several inches longer, which threw everything out of wack. I did have one of those moments, my air pump decided to fall to pieces, so I had to look for my little extension that goes on the end of the valve. I stepped on a bowling pin, lost my balance and got hit in the head with a spade. I have zoot tri shorts and PI bike shorts. I realy like the Zoot shorts the PI shorts feel like I'm wearing a diaper. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe and Chris, Marathon training is very strenous, we all know it. One way to prevent injury is create a strong step by developing your stabilizers. Best way to do so is running nature trails. Make it an appointment once a week, forget the speed, a six or seven miler on dirt, choppy stride running up and down creeks, hopping over obstacles, etc. will help you BIG time. Don't forget to swim, yoga and dinamic stretching before running neither. A strong marathoner is a healthy one. |

And you may develop a new appreciation/love for trail running in general like i did! Back from my last Tri of the year. Did pretty well considering the almost non-existent training of the past couple of weeks. Finished 5th in my age group and 39th overall in the Oly (my favorite distance) in 2:24. Despite the decent result, I'm glad to be done tri training for now. Really focusing on the long distance running now. Lots of trail running and long mileage on the roads to get ready for marathon in October and Ultra in February. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Tri-club is holding a mock tri on Sep 8. Sprint and Olympic distances. Thinking in doing it but undecided. I scrapped my plans for a real race in September because July was a lost month, so trying to get back in "race shape", not even close now. So should I even attempt the mock, or wait for another one down the line? They tend to hold them every month or so. |

Nice to see the good fitness level you are developing and am confident you will do very well on your Twin Cities Marathon! Thanks Gabe. I've been running a lot of miles and that, I believe, helps a lot. 57 miles in the last 6 days. Tomorrow is complete rest. (I get every Wednesday off). But age matters as well. Maffetone's formula is 180-age for a reason. I think you really do lose an ability to get your heart rate elevated at about one beat per minute a year. I maxed at 160, but I really can't under any circumstances get my heart rate above 170-175. |

@Matthew: I have the same Giro aero helmet and it is a great value and fits really well even though I have a head shape usually works better with a Bell helmet. It takes a short time to get acclimated. Only downside is that it is warmer than a regular helmet and some of newer ones (like the Rudy Wingspan) have better ventilation. Also, you better ride like the wind sporting one of those aero helmets because you automatically look faster. Andy S 9/B 10/ R 11 Rest 2 Total 30 Time 35:57:53 98% |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seems like Hurricane Isaac is heading this way (maybe by Monday). While my wife is worried about petty stuff (canned goods, water, batteries), I am looking forward to the opportunity to test my new aerobar position in a wind tunnel, without having to actually go to a wind tunnel. Can I log max speed even if both rider and bike are flying through the air? |
