Now see, I just do not get the point of ending the mentor program and then starting up again.  I mean I had time to get one tri in and that was all.........well most of us only did one race or have not been able to do one yet. So I'd figure it should be a mentor group that lasts an entire season (until winter shuts us down).
I can understand opening it again from time to time to let others in, or out as they choose......but to say it's over ? HUH
isn't the point to get a mentor team through a season, to be there to watch each other through and encourage  ?........
ok could just be my "time o the month" talking, but I felt it had to be said  !lol
I"m just glad we'll be together  ! I HATE CHANGE and I want my people with me (that said, I do not mind adding more people to love......) smile

Last year we started in December and continued into the summer (we sorta just fizzled out in late summer). At some point we were archived but we just continued along as if nothing had happened. Again, I don't see anything to stop us from continuing on. At worst we'd need to start a new thread.

Yvonne has her big race in August and I have mine in September; I definitely want my peeps behind me through til then!

Hi everyone,

Made it back despite all the changes and stuff I can't see or read on my page (it's wider than my monitor and the light blue with white writing...am I really supposed to be able to read that?).  One good thing is that I can't see my races...as I know IM Florida 70.3 has probably worked it's way to the top now.  That would make me nervous.  Work is letting me through today, too.

Congrats on your first triathlon Yvonne!  Looks like you got a rocking time, too, despite damp pants   I did one triathlon once in a torrential downpour...I think it's easier when everyone is soaked, though

I know other groups have kept going in the archives, although people tend to drop off.  I can't believe it's that time already.  I can't believe this group is up to 146 or so pages!!!

Hope everyone is doing well.  Again, I just can't keep up with everything going on

PLEASE HELP!!! I really value your thoughts on this one! Thank you!!!!

No, doing a triathlete is not the same thing as doing a triathlon! Embarassed

Honestly, I think that zero-tri-to-IM in one season is crazy but I hope you know your body and know what you are capable of. What's your base like now?

Getting in an Oly and a HIM before the IM would make sense, but scheduling them in might be quite difficult. While you might be able to do sprints on back-to-back weekends you're gonna want to leave increasing weeks between longer races, with probably a good month before the IM. Some people say that you can treat a sprint in there as just a tough workout day.

I would recommend that you check out the IM training plans here on BT for more insight.

Good luck!

What do you mean doing a tri and a tri-athlete aren't the same?! LOL You're hilarious!

In terms of crazy...it sounded like a reasonable idea at the time but as I was swimming in my sprint- I thought 'this? 7 more times???' My endurance is pretty reasonable as I generally try to keep up my long runs to a minimum of 2h post marathon and I have had 4h workout days with no issues....and yes I know that IM will be MUCH longer than that. My swim will be the big question mark.

Thank you for the reminder that while race experience is a good thing it may impede my workouts, impact recovery and it might be better to get in the long bike ride instead of doing a race. I will definitely keep that in mind and also look more closely at the plans on BT. We also have a couple of tri training books at home which have plans that I can follow too.

As my coaching is in a group situation, I have never actually asked them their thoughts on IM. They know that it is on my calendar and haven't advised me against it. I did mention it briefly to run coach who is an experienced IM athlete and he thought that I would be fine. I will ask more about what I should do for my race calendar.

Thanks, Nicole!

After diminishing returns on Sinday's and yesterday's runs I've decided to turn this week into a recovery week. So, I'm cutting back on the distance and intensity. Today I "only" swam 1600m   The really good news is that the improved stroke is starting to come together well and I've knocked off at least 4 strokes per 25m!

My tri club is through one of the local colleges/rec centres so we have three sessions a week each with a discipline-specific coach. Run and bike coaches have A LOT of personal tri experience, including multiple IMs (Head coach runs a coaching company), and swim coach was a national team swimmer so there has been a lot of learning happening. Unfortunately, since it is through a rec centre- the club disbands for the summer so I will be training on my own. I will talk to head coach more about thoughts for summer race calendar and training and let you know.

Now the next race....I would love your input...so as many of you know I had a slight error in judgement Embarassedand signed up for IMCanada for Aug 30 despite having no tri experience. (Does being married to one count? ) It was just so inspiring watching and dh signed up again as did other friends. Would you buy peer pressure? LOL Anyway, I am committed- or should have been committed- to an institution that is... so just trying to get some good experience beforehand.

So my options (including hesitations/considerations) are:

May 24th Try this Tri super-sprint (pool swim) – Signed up for 5k trail race May 23rd

May 31th  KGH Sprint (pool swim) – Signed up to run BIG relay (15mi) June 6th and not sure I want to race 3 weekends in a row

June 20th  Chinook Olympic  (lake swim) – conflicts with a 5k trail race (oops but I would forfeit trail race)
July 4th Foothills Charity Sprint (lake swim)- SIGNED UP

July 12th Osoyoos Half (lake)- Intimidating as it is a VERY hilly bike- though covers much the same course as the IMC so would be good practice-I figure that this will either psych me up or psych me out! DH is already signed up.

July 18th Canmore Olympic (lake)
Aug 9th Chaparral Olympic (lake)
Aug 16th Strathmore Womens Sprint (pool)
Aug 30th IMC- SIGNED UP

PLEASE HELP!!! I really value your thoughts on this one! Thank you!!!!

Yvonne,

I'd highly recommend throwing a metric or English century ride in there - 5-8 hours in the saddle is not an experience you want to have for the first time before a marathon! I haven't even done a HIM, yet, but Oly was a big step from sprint for me. I think 2-3 hours of anything is about my limit right now. I can push through it, but my performance really suffers. The run on the Oly's I've done was really bad after that longer bike ride. I've been advised to do more bricks with those distances, so that's my plan for my last build cycle before my HIM in July.

Regarding your schedule, I'd keep the trail run, but skip the first 2 short triathlons and do the Oly over the trail run in June and seriously consider the HIM in July. The OWS will also be good experience, and it will give you time to figure out some of your weaknesses at the longer distances and address them before you need to start tapering. I'm not big on racing (although it would probably be better for me than my private training by pushing my mileage up) so another Oly in August to confirm progress would be all I'd do.

I think you can definitely make the cutoffs, having watched Kona the past 2 years. I'll be watching that finish chute to see you cross over! How exciting!

how are you feeliing? love the new avatar!

Hey Julie,

I'm keeping good thoughts for your dad (and Amy's mom)! Is there a Pain Clinic in the area? There are a lot of non-pharmaceutical therapies for pain that many physicians are unaware of unless they specialize in diseases or conditions with pain as a primary symptom. It might not be cheaper, but might be easier to get coverage for a specialty than for meds.

I got my Weight Watchers 10% award today! Yippee! When I signed up, I thought I'd *never* possibly get to 10%.

I weighed in at 183 this morning, so I'm getting eerily close to the 170s. I think then it might hit me, since I never really got to celebrate the 180s because of the divorce issues.

In other news, my new roomie and I did an ab video last night, and then Bun Burner. I thought the second one would be easy, since I do squats, lunches, leg extensions, etc. Boy, was I wrong. I am so sore today!!! But I got on the bike trainer for an easy 45-minute spin.

And, get this. I went to pick up my kickball T-shirt tonight, and virtually my entire time is single women looking to meet men! It's pretty hillarious. But we'll have fun.

I finally got the video from my swimming clinic (had to bug the guy about it). I'm getting it uploaded as my profile video. I'll let you know when it's ready for viewing.  OK, it's up. Notice how you see my upper arm enter the water before any other part of my arm; I'm working on knifing in from the fingertips. I also notice that my pull goes out to the side. He told me that my pull should be deeper but I didn't realize what I was really doing. The last thing we talked about is how I had next to no glide (I see that my left arm stays out a little better than the right); I've been working on more of a catch up stroke with the arm staying out front longer. It appears to be working because I counted strokes today and I'm down by 4-5 strokes per 25m!

Go to my Profile and it's right there for viewing.

So, was I surprised when I looked at the race results today and I came in 4th out of 10th in the 50-59 age group!  Obviously, the slow runners showed up that day, or everyone was feeling as badly as I was!  My Garmin logged the race at 2.92 (the 2 mile marker was short) but it was a sanctioned race.  So do I assume that my Garmin was off or the actual length of the race? I've never had that big of a difference before. Obviously, it makes a difference in my pace.  Last year, this race was my 2nd ever 5K (or any race for that matter).  This was the same course as last year (I didn't have my Garmin then), so I know that whatever the actual length, I cut my pace by 43 seconds per mile from last year.

Thanks for your thoughts, Trish! I deleted based on your selections and it does look like a good combination of experience while still allowing time for some solid training. DH did lots of big 5-6h bricks when training for IM so I figure I will tag along.

As a teacher, I am fortunate to have the summer off and loads of opportunity to do some OWS in some community lakes as well as do some long rides. We also have a nice perk of being so far north that sunset is already close to 8pm and will be pushed back for another 2 hours so ample time to train in the evenings....if anything it will be about reigning it in and staying free of injury.

Weather looks reasonable on Friday, so I might see about asking DH to take me for a nice 2h ride and then follow it with a run.

I do love IM Live and the ability to follow athletes- lots of marathons are doing this too! It's always neat knowing that someone somewhere is cheering!
Thanks again!!!
