Had two god days...Bike followed by run later in the evening yesterday and run followed by bike this morning.  Baby steps in getting back to consistency.  My schedule permits a swim at lunch and I think I am going to take advantage of it.  Plan is to complete a strong bike workout tomorrow morning.  My two runs were within about 8 hours of one another and ankle feels pretty good.

Got my swim on at lunch.  Beginning to notice I am no longer one of the slowest in the pool.  Consistently beginning to swim at less then 2:00/100M pace - which is an improvement for me.  Know that I need to spend more time in pool - that is along term project for me.

Today in the afternoon I bailed out from work early to go to the bike races, warmed up and then raced back to back races ("C" race and "B" race). Got fifth place in a really good Sprint on the C, dead last on the B race. Those guys are ridiculously fast, the average speed for the race was above 25mph for 48 minutes. My effort was harder on the C race though because I was close to the front or on the front for pretty much the entire 30 minutes.

Nice high end, excruciatingly painful races. Payout is good though...

Have thought about doing all three of those, as well as several others.  I have a couple of buddies that did the bourbon chase last year.  Logistically I have been unable. I'm hoping to change that in the very near future. I'm planning for my first 50 miler (solo) in February.

My wife just did Ragnar last weekend and had a blast. I'm a bit jealous actually. She did it with a team of 12, but both of us agree that doing it as an ultra with a team of 6 would be even better. Their team finished 27th out of almost 300 and they didn't really try to stack their team, the avg. pace was just under 8:00. The winner avg. pace was 6:13, crazy fast. The course they did was called Great River or something like that, and was super hilly, in and out of the Mississippi river valley.
On another note, I've got some workouts to add but can't do it from my phone right now. I just got hit with the first round of, "My wife dislikes my time spent training for IM, and it's only going to get worse" and naturally it's had an adverse effect on my motivation and training time. Not in a happy place right now.

Hey Andy, hang in there buddy, you are doing awesome with your training and it will get better with your wife.  I visited "the my wife dislikes..." zone multiple times and there were several times where I really thought I would have to cancel my IM plans (actually now with a newborn I seem to be there more often now Frown).  However, sometimes all it takes is skipping one training or pushing it to an earlier/later time, to let them know that they are still the top priority Laughing

Andy,

Trade training time for more quality training time. The biggest fear any first time Ironman faces is being able to cover the distance and like I told you before, there's no doubt in my mind you will. What I do (don't forget I'm training for one too, three weeks sooner than yours) is run before work three times a week, therefore no family time is lost. Only Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon/evenings are reserved for swim/bike/swim and the rest of my workouts are done in the early morning (including weekends). My interference with the family is minimal unlike the time when I was training for Arizona myself, when I pretty much wasn't home except for sleeping.

Actually I had a talk with my wife a couple of days ago and she told me she thinks I'm not training enough, that I should crank it up. Hehe! Also, do your own workout laundry, that goes a long way.

Gabe,

How's little Gabe? He's a cutie! Seen pics on fb... I see your training is going well. I know you will have a good race in NY. Any plans for a future IM?

Chris,

Superb workouts, listen to your body though and CROSS TRAIN.

Mitch,

Glad to know you are getting back on track, take it easy though...

Good Looking race Ernesto. Just a nob question or statement on your logs. The the 1st race you watt and candace was high then the second race. Is this due to fatigue? also would that be the reason for going slower?? I dont have a power meter so i have no idea or they work.

Second note - You said to Andy you jog in the mornings. What time do you start? I start at 6.30am and good not see how to get a good workout in before work unless I'm up at 4.30 or is that what time i should be up?

Andy -  Keep it up. your doing good and the wife will turn around at some point.

An afternoon 12k run, 1:07. Not my favourite time to run, have been on my feet almost 12hrs before heading out, which made running much more difficult.

Andy, hang in there, look after your support team as much as you can. It's so much harder to go through the whole thing fighting with 'them'. I also did almost all my running before my support team woke up, pool was done after/during work and only few hours on weekends were sacrificed. I would head out on the ride sometimes at 4:30am! In summer it is a good time to do it, no traffic, cool and you can finish and do something with the family afterwards.

Climbinggonzo - 2012-08-22 9:58 PM My wife just did Ragnar last weekend and had a blast.

Andy- hang in there. I have my first HIM in 2 weeks and it has been a constant fight to find balance between work, family and training. It seems the message is find balance, focus on quality work, and find your little slice of time for training. My time is the runch/bunch/swunch, and a night or two per week making sure I am there for dinner and bedtime. I think we all go through those ackward stages, where it feels like the support team is ready to quit, and  you ask yourself wtf am I doing. Overcomming those demons and working through it are part of the reward. Sometimes, its ok to blow off a  workout and give the time to the kids or her. Remember its all about balance.

Have thought about doing all three of those, as well as several others.  I have a couple of buddies that did the bourbon chase last year.  Logistically I have been unable. I'm hoping to change that in the very near future. I'm planning for my first 50 miler (solo) in February.

Which 50 miler?  Been thinking of putting a team together for Madison - Chicago Ragnar.  maybe a 2014 event.  I grew up in KY so the Bourbon Chase sounds cool.  the Trans-Rockies just sounds like an awesome experience.  You and a partner doing about 20 miles a day in the Rockies.  Good food and drink at night.  Camping.  What's not to love.

Mitch,

Glad to know you are getting back on track, take it easy though...

E - Yep.  Dialed back cycling workout this morning.  Moderate to easier intensity while watching a show on my HBO GO app.  Resisted the urge yesterday to sign up for a marathon relay team for October.  Goal is to get 100% near end of year so that I can begin focusing on the next season.  Thanks for everyone's thoughts and encouragement.  Great Team we have here.

Matthews, The second race was "easier" because I sat in the back of the peloton, getting the benefit of the draft. It was a big pack too so the slipstream is very convenient. On the first race, the speed was less but the effort (power and heart rate) was much higher, the cadence dropped also on the second race because there was a lot of coasting. I did the second race just to try it out, I didn't even try to sprint at the end so I ended up dead last. I used it more like a nice tempo.

Destin Beach 50 miler.  Florida in February sounded a lot better than northern Ohio in February(race there was my second choice). I REALLY want to do the Bourbon Chase at some point. If you want to seriously get a team together, I'd be willing to help organize and participate in either of those.
