wow, John.  Your second toe and mine look photoshop-identical.  Good luck on the 'few days'!  Although, short runs were easier than walks.  Kudos on missing the toe in between!!

Ok, it seems we are a little light on racers this weekend.  I am over talking about Fatty's toes, ribs and reading materials (hesitate to see what he has tucked in the bathroom!) so let's move on!

Most of us have a few weeks to a few months (IMFL folks) before our season comes to a close.  What are you really focusing on improving before your last big race?  Tell us how you're doing it!

Ok, I'll go. My last big race of the year (and the race I'm focused on now) is a trail marathon in December. It's super challenging, and it's my favorite race of the year. I improved a lot last year, but I got passed by a lot of people in the last mile, so I haven't aced it yet. As always, pacing is my biggest area for improvement. I have 2 trail marathons coming up that are practice runs for the TTM, and they're going to be all about learning this whole pacing thing.

Fun story.... Rasmus Henning is racing the Calgary 70.3 on Sunday.

He is staying with our coach, and is swimming at the Y with a girl from the team right now. He will be hanging out with the team tomorrow morning at the lake to run through all their 'morning jitters.'  A few of us that arent competing are going to head out there tomorrow during our ride hopefully and get a quick chat in with him.

I've heard he is 'dreamy and really nice.'

I am finishing out the year with an Oly over Labor Day weekend, a 15K two weeks later and a HM the weekend after IMFL.  My longest run to date has been just over 11 miles, so I am still focusing on building strength and endurance in hopes of making an attempt to race them instead of just finishing.  Losing another 10-15 pounds before then would help tremendously.

Really looking forward to running in cooler weather next week in Maine.  Even running on the beach this past week was difficult with the humidity.

I'm getting back into tri training but I'm having a few problems with my legs. Last week it was ITBS in my right knee and this week it's a new injury for me, posterior tibial tendinitis in my left ankle... I think I'll have to avoid running for a bit longer which is really disappointing.

My next event is the Noosa Triathlon in November unless my legs recover!

Marathon winter for me.  I am focusing on all time pr's in all running distances... there I said it.

Ironman people:  are you experimenting with nutrition or sticking to what has worked in the past?

No more races on my schedule yet. There is an aquathon that might be fun to do in 3 weeks, and then I have the Disney half marathon in a month. I am going to try Jelly Bellies I think. Gus have been making me sick the past few times I have used them. Anyone try almond butter squeeze packs during long runs? I would like to see if I can do real food. I am enjoying the Olympics, all day! Everyday! Beach Volleyball. Swimming. Even bicycling! Go Team USA!

Complete overhaul of my nutrition for IM.   Been working with my coach's sports nutritionist and she identified Malodextrin as a GI issue for me.  Out with Hammer SE and Gels and in comes a custom Infinit blend she created for me that uses faster burning sugars.  I have a bike formula and a run formula.  So far, it's worked well, although I am still working out the kinks with using the same basic taste for so many hours.  I have another BIG DAY coming up and we're going to set up some flat coke for me to intermix since it's on the course.  The other MAJOR change was salt loading before long rides, BIG DAYS and racing.  That has worked remarkably well, especially given the heat.

what worked?  i ain't found that YET!  ha. i had to pick up some new kicks yesterday and saw they had honey stinger waffels  so i bought a couple for todays ride.  THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!.

i don't mind perform.  so as of now its perform, water and possibly honey stingers on the bike.  the only issue i can kinda see is both perform and the waffles are sweet.  i can see that getting old pretty quick.

not sure about the run yet.  i really don't want to carry anything.  yesterday for the first time i thought about changing in t2 ( and t1)  i wear these running shorts with a rear pocket.  if these waffles work out i might change in order to carry them.  the oomph shorts are great but the pocket sucks.  i haven't decided on what jersey to wear yet, so maybe i won't need to change at all.

kim..you can usually find me and the kids standing about 5 feet away from the jelly belly section at the grocery store pretending we're looking at something else.  just don't try to talk to us for a few minutes because out mouths are full.

John - I went to PB & J for that reason.  The Infinit really upset my stomach this round so I switched.  I was able to eat whatever someone was holding on the run comfortably and I believe the solid food was the reason.  Just a thought.  I stopped eating anything solid 90 minutes prior to the run though and the stomach felt great.

Suzy - It would be great to have your knowledge base and have the REASONS why something worked for me

Kim - My wife is running Disney too.  It doesn't sound like I am invited though Frown, girls trip.

I have about 5 weeks until my last race of the season - a near-HIM that includes 2km swim, 105km bike, 20km run.   I visited the island a week ago and rode the bike course to get a feel for how tough the hills were.   I'll share the hill profile tomorrow - I could handle the climbs, but the fact that the toughest climbs are near the end of the course has me a little concerned.   I am also not very good at descending and the descents are really long and steep ( for me anyway).

My current focus is on extending my endurance on the bike and run.   I did 120 km last week (the course plus some and plan to do long rides of 150km this week and next week.  I ran 17.5 km on Sunday despite the heat and humidity and am planning to take it out to 20km next Sunday.  From there I will be ramping down.   I'm also spending lots of time in the pool and focusing more on intervals than technique.

Ironman people:  are you experimenting with nutrition or sticking to what has worked in the past?

I'm still tweaking my nutrition.  But mostly the balance of too much vs too little.

On the bike; I've been adding GU roctanes to my waterbottle which makes my tummy happy but after ~2 hrs the taste is hard to swallow.  So far same thing with all flavors. I think its the heat and I'm wondering if I need to refresh my mix to keep it palatable. Similar issue with the Bonk Breakers, I'm not loving the taste but my body likes the solids.

On the run I'm loving the Perform.  I used to take 1/2 water, 1/2 Perform with GUs or PB&J but have switched to all Perform along with orange slices. I'd love to practice with Coke too but I don't think it will matter.  I am more worried about getting to the end of the bike with a happy tummy than what I'll consume over the run. I just have a feeling that no matter what I practice with mi 20 of the IM marathon will be completely new to me and my body.  My body will tell me what I need.

I'm going with worked last year. Infinit, a bonk breaker or two, and a couple of GU rotanes on the bike. Run will be off the course, but I may carry a few roctanes as we get Powerbar gels up here for IMC, and I'm not a fan.

Plan is to wear my fancy, schmancy desoto 300 mile shorts under the wetsuit so I do not have a 9:45 T1 this year.

Will probably change in T2 to shorts though. The desoto's are fine to run in, but same as what John said, a pocket or so would be nice. Plus, last year it was nice to have a little bit of 'room' when running and walking for 5+ hours. Big 180k ride this weekend, and then start shortening things up. I think next week I am going to do a 140k gran fondo to have a supported long ride.

Dunno what else I'm doing this year, but after spending yesterday at Mt. Rainier, I think RAMROD (Ride Around Mt. Rainier in One Day, a 150-mile ride every July) has not only made it on my to-do list, but might climb quickly to the top!! Unfortunately it's a pure lottery system to get in, but I think it's something I need to do. I have several friends who have done it and might see if I can get one of my cycling BFFs on board.

On the nutrition front, you peeps might want to check out this blog http://californiatraining.blogspot.com/ and read her post from July 6 (her IM France nutrition report). I found it very interesting how much solid food she is eating and how it's working for her.

I have two more races this summer - a sprint next weekend and then an Olympic at the end of the month. Both are races I have done before, so I'm excited to see if I have improved from last year! I'm switching things up by doing more higher intensity intervals. My training group is done for the summer so I've been crashing the IMWI training group and swimming and running with them. I was feeling really unfocused and lost after Racine and continuing my training with this group helps. Last week our coach had us run 2x16 min w/3 min recovery @ Z4b. Thought I was going to puke! But it was a really good training session bc I had never pushed myself to get that uncomfortable before. I haven't run a 5k in about 2 years so I signed up for one in September and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to push on at that pace for 1 more mile. I'm really looking forward to the Fall bc after than 5k I'll be running my first marathon in October!

As for nutrition, I just stick to Gu and Clif bars and have never had an upset stomach. I still get major cases of the munchies when I'm riding my bike so I think I need something more substantial, like a PB&J. Although we're having a PB shortage here! The past two times I have been to the store all of the (natural) PB has been sold out!

It all depends on how much you'd like to spend.  Club level in a covered section is great: 205-213 or 231-239.  I'd avoid either end zone (116-128, 143-151 are all uncovered) or the Hawk's Nest in 146-150.  The nosebleeds up in 305-313 and 331-339 aren't too shabby since the angle of the seats is pretty steep so you can still see pretty well.
