Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MDHillSlug - 2009-04-08 7:48 PM I finally got the video from my swimming clinic (had to bug the guy about it). I'm getting it uploaded as my profile video. I'll let you know when it's ready for viewing. OK, it's up. Notice how you see my upper arm enter the water before any other part of my arm; I'm working on knifing in from the fingertips. I also notice that my pull goes out to the side. He told me that my pull should be deeper but I didn't realize what I was really doing. The last thing we talked about is how I had next to no glide (I see that my left arm stays out a little better than the right); I've been working on more of a catch up stroke with the arm staying out front longer. It appears to be working because I counted strokes today and I'm down by 4-5 strokes per 25m! Go to my Profile and it's right there for viewing. It is always so cool to see people's videos as it allows you the opportunity to 'study' stroke and hopefully learn. As evidenced by my swim....I am definitely not the best one to give advice LOL....but DH was looking over my shoulder as I watched your video and made the following comments: - left arm in particular seemed really wide and thus impedes glide, also the pull seemed to be more of an outward sweep as opposed to the preferred 'S' - looks like she has a really strong catch but may be torquing her shoulders as she seems to be working really hard - much more glide needed- think 'stretch and reach' Hope that makes sense...and might be of some help to you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone. Congrats to all the racers. Nice to see Monica is back with us. Way to go Susie on the weight loss. I am a little behind on reading all the postings. I got back to Japan on April 1 and on April 3 our daughter in law and 2 grandchildren arrived (almost 4 year old boy and almost 4 months old girl). They stayed for 5 days and then my wife and I flew back with them to their place. We will be here through Sunday. I will be lucky to get in a couple of runs. All for now..... |

I've been working hard at improving so I wonder what it would take to get another video done. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I'm exactly one month away from my HIM, and it's consuming my thoughts. I worry, I plot, I plan, then I worry again when I can't follow through on those plots and plans. It's hard to keep to a training plan when you have a real life. This Saturday there are two running races in the local area: a 5K and a 10K. I know it would be better training for me to do the 10K (and Torture Dan will be there!), but the 5K is one of my track club's Grand Prix races and I'm doing really well in the Grandmasters category. So I'm torn over which race to run. Which would you choose? And then there is next Saturday. I will be traveling all next week for work, but I get back around noon on Friday. There is a sprint tri (with an OWS) about an hour and a half from me on Saturday. I haven't registered for it, haven't rented a wetsuit, and I'm considering skipping it because I think I can get some better training on my own. However, it's been months since I've done a triathlon, so the refresher would be good. So what would you do about this one? Help!??? (and thanks!) |

While my tri experience is still 'newbie', my thought would be to do the 5K and then put some time on your bike. Your HIM is coming up so I would think that you will begin your taper soon but at the same time get in a long ride/run beforehand. The 5K will allow a faster recovery than the 10K, and leave you with the opportunity to continue to add a bit to your endurance through a long bike ride either the same day or next day. Maybe do a long swim the same day as your race and then the long bike with small run brick on Sunday. My vote would be to do your own training as the sprint would end up as about 1.5h of intense workout where you could try to put in one last long but easy effort. The only other consideration though would be whether you feel that you need the OWS practice (with wetsuit). The only other bit to be gained would be practice in transition- but that can be simulated at home/ visualized/ and speed in transition won't be as big a factor when it comes to the grand scheme of your HIM. Let us know what you decide! Good luck! ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Offthegrid - 2009-04-08 9:43 PM I got my Weight Watchers 10% award today! Yippee! When I signed up, I thought I'd *never* possibly get to 10%. I weighed in at 183 this morning, so I'm getting eerily close to the 170s. I think then it might hit me, since I never really got to celebrate the 180s because of the divorce issues. In other news, my new roomie and I did an ab video last night, and then Bun Burner. I thought the second one would be easy, since I do squats, lunches, leg extensions, etc. Boy, was I wrong. I am so sore today!!! But I got on the bike trainer for an easy 45-minute spin. And, get this. I went to pick up my kickball T-shirt tonight, and virtually my entire time is single women looking to meet men! It's pretty hillarious. But we'll have fun. I forget how to play kickball ! I however think it's totally cool you are playing it ! Conrats on your 10% goal met !! WOOHOOOO |

Hopefully I'll start sleeping better and sounder as time goes on. (My ex-roomie said I was crying in my sleep.) I *hope* to get in at least two bike rides this weekend. Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning! I'm still feeling a bit run down physically so I ditched the bike commute and did Pilates instead. Tomorrow is a real, genuine rest day! I'm planning a brick for Sunday if I'm feeling up to it, or just a ride if not. Probably will take the tri bike out again, but after this I will need to concentrate on riding the Allez since that's what I'll be using for my tri in May (too hilly for the tri bike). I ate way too much last night at my family's seder. I felt physically ill when I went to bed! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() lufferly - 2009-04-08 9:28 PM So, was I surprised when I looked at the race results today and I came in 4th out of 10th in the 50-59 age group! Obviously, the slow runners showed up that day, or everyone was feeling as badly as I was! My Garmin logged the race at 2.92 (the 2 mile marker was short) but it was a sanctioned race. So do I assume that my Garmin was off or the actual length of the race? I've never had that big of a difference before. Obviously, it makes a difference in my pace. Last year, this race was my 2nd ever 5K (or any race for that matter). This was the same course as last year (I didn't have my Garmin then), so I know that whatever the actual length, I cut my pace by 43 seconds per mile from last year. Woo hoo! First of all, you were there so obviously the fast runners showed up (4th isn't anything to sneeze at). And I'm surprised that they grouped 50-59 and not 50-54 and 55-59 -- do you know how you would have done in a smaller age group? Is a "sanctioned" race and a "certified" course the same thing? It's my understanding (from Torture Dan) that a certified course must be at least the distance published or longer. And another thought -- GPS isn't always exact, and if you ran some tangents you can also cut off some distance. But still, nearly .2 of a mile is a lot! |
