Got my Garmin 310XT on Tuesday and trained with it yesterday (Wednesday).  I love it.  You can customize the heck out of this thing and see just about any data you would like.  Each sport has 4 customizable screens (you can turn screens off if you don't want to use them), and each screen can be customized to have 1-4 data sections, so you can have anywhere from 1-16 different metrics for each sport.  You can set up multiple bikes and customize those screens as well.  All kinds of alerts by distance, time, calories burned.  Multi-sport mode where all you do is hit the lap button at the end of each leg and it changes automatically to the next sport and the corresponding set up (even records transition time).

It was pricey for sure and I hope it ends up being robust enough to take the demands of Ironman training.  I would hate to have to buy one of these every year.

I love mine but I haven't figured out half of what it does. I'm slowly working my way through the owners manual.

Tomorrow I'm going to a tri store and tricking out my bike a bit and then my birthday money is gone.

Well, I opted for the Forerunner 305 since I wasn't prepared to lay out the $ for the XT. I still am having problems figuring it all out. The cadence thingy doesn't work when I ride on the trainer only outside, it usually takes anywhere from 5-10 minuted for the GPS to find me and it drops out alot. I've gone back to using my polar for my indoor workouts and will probably stick with it for races - Have enought stress without having to be sure in transition it's going  from sport 2-3 and taking it off the bike and putting on my wrist. I will admit the downleaded info is COOL, but most of it doesn't really make sense to me as far as how it can help me - seems as though a Garmin tutor might be in order!

So far happy with the 305 keeps hr great and picks up sats down here in sunny fl great. Not even long enough for me to stretch out, much faster then the suunto. Like the auto lap function. Helps me to realize how long I have been on the bike. Definitely want to get the cadence function so I can stop counting. Hard to ride and watch the road and watch to count. Havent tried to change functions while going from bike to run yet guess I will need to read more we shall see.

Some updates on the 310XT. It says the GPS doesn't work underwater. This is sort of true and sort of not. It will try to work but will keep losing the satellite. When it does that, it appears that timing gets suspended for a while. And here I thought I was getting faster! Darn.

I plan to turn off the satellites manually next time I used it to swim. I only want it for swimming to keep track of time anyway. Pace/speed would be nice, but is not necessary.

Also, I need some advice... I'm planning to do the SJ Rock 'n Roll Marathon OCt 4th as a warm-up for Big Kahuna HIM on Oct. 25th. Now I'm going to San Diego on Oct. 16th for GoTRIBal Fest on Oct. 17th. It's a series of clinics and an expo. (I'm going to meet Chrissie Wellington!!) A bunch of the women are doing a small Sprint tri on Sunday, the 17th. There is also a Super Sprint distance.

Am I crazy to be thinking about doing the Super Sprint?! I figure it will take me an hour and I'd probably work out that much on that day if I stayed home. But I'm wondering if there is something I'm not thinking of that would make me sorry I did it?

Wish I lived out in Sunny Cali. I get to dodge lightning storms and low pressures out of no where. I would go for it too. If nothing else a good workout and my time with transitioning.

So - it was interesting to say the least, but some lessons learned at my HIM this weekend:

1. Always wear a bike jersey for the bike portion of the race (to prevent road rash should you fall)
2. Before looking ahead on the bike course take a quick look down first in case the road disappears
3. Do not rely on race volunteers for directions-know where you are racing!

It was intended to boost my confidence about my training but did more to boost my mental training to keep going. RR is here if anyone is interested in the ugly details. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=179922

Hey, we had dry lightening followed by a thunderstorm this weekend. I got to ride in hail. It was awesome. (Said sarcastically.)

Seriously, the weather was very weird this weekend and it was my Waves to Wine ride so I had to HTFU and get through it. At least our team raised a lot of money to fight MS.

That race report is truly inspiring and you should be very proud of yourself!  It took alot of courage to push through and get to the finish line.  That mental toughness and experience will only help you at IMFL!

Did a nice bike ride today burned 3074 calories in 60 miles 3.5 hrs time. I know slow for some but did my long run yesterday and was feeling it on the bike today. Plus hit the pool for long swim this am. Trying to get my nutrition right before my HIM. I know we talked about this before could somebody please help. I dont want to bonk on my run. Plus I drank 5 water bottles had to stop at local Fire station for ice and refill and I still lost 3.5 lbs on the ride. What do I need to be doing? Next year is the big show for me I want to make this HIM a good running at some basic goals.

What are you taking in for calories on the bike?  How much and what form (gels, bars, liquid, none)?

I am currently taking in roughly 100 cal an hour clif bar, along with the gatorade which I dont really count. I am wondering if more is needed for the longer distance. When I did my oly race in the beginning of the season I took a gel in before the swim and after the swim. One clif bar on bike and a gel on the run. The distance on HIM is double roughly and I want to have enough in the tank to finish the run strong. On the run for the oly I felt gassed but that may have been because a huge portion of the run was on the beach. Just wondering what and how much on the bike I should be shooting for along with the run? Thanks

There's a formula I've seen in several places that calculates how many calories you should take in on the bike. This page has a link to a Word doc that contains the formula:

http://www.infinitnutrition.us/information/

I have found through trial and error that I must take in a minimum of 200 calories per hour, but that my calorie needs go up as the course gets more difficult (i.e., hilly). So I calibrate my sports drink to 200 calories per hour and bring gels to supplement as needed.

I suspect you are taller than me and therefore heavier and therefore need more calories per hour though.

Thanks for the info do you use the premix or mix your own formula up. Im not much higher on the cal intake for a min. I took in more cal today through gels and think the infinit would be easier my prob is I am still needing the water intake. How do you add all this to the bike? Guess I could wear my camel back.

I started with their pre-mixes to get an idea of how I liked different levels and then I started ordering custom mixes based on the pre-mixes.

For my HIM's this year I used strictly infinit for calories on the bike...making (1) 3 hour bottle (approx. 625 calories) that sat in the cage behind the seat.  I used my aero drink strictly for water and re-filled this at every aid station on the course.  It was simple and it worked great...for the run I had a gu flask in my shirt pocket and took it with water at every aid station.  I subscribe to the KISS theory.

Rymac did you use the infinit for the run also in your gu flask? Do you have your own formula for infinit or do you get the premix?

I used the premix Ironman formula....I am not knowledgable enough about the nutrients and sweat factor and blah blah blah to be able to setup a mix on my own..ha!  I had (4) Gu's in my flask and that was it...no infinit on the run for me.

Infinit does make a run specific formula if interested.  The main issue is that you can't get as many calories in on the run without upsetting your stomach.  The run formula is based off of this.  IMO, the issue with this formula is that you need to carry the weight of a bottle with you vs. grab as you go from the aid stations.

Didnt know if you could mix one as a concentrate or like a gel with minimal water and take in water from an aid station, or just use one as flask of infinit with a water chaser. I have to run with a water bottle now on my long runs or I die due to the humidity. Just curious let  me know what you guys are doing.

I tried mixing my drink strong and chasing it with water and it was too complicated for me. Tongue out But there is not reason you can't do it that way, if you want to.

I use my fuel belt in races and take in water from the aide stations to supplement. I've had situations where they ran out of sports drink by the time I came by and I don't like Gatorade, which is what is on most of the courses. So I try not to depend on them.

Went with the infinit started out with somewhat of a premix formula and built off of it. Talked with a rep who helped out. Used it a couple times going to try it on my long run tomorrow. Taste isnt bad just need to take in the right amount now. Getting closer to HIM time for me.
