Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I have a question I am somewhat embarassed to ask. I'll ask you guys instead of throwing it out in the general Triathlon Talk forum where I'll really get slammed. I have read that wetsuits are designed to fit very tight to keep the water out (of course) and my question is, is the fit tight enough that I can wear regular cycling shorts underneath without have the wet diaper effect? Point being, I am having issues with my bike seat fit. I am trying to get those issues resolved, but the idea of going 25miles in tri shorts is not one I am looking forward to. What do you guys recommend? |

Got to go w/ the tri shorts. I feel like your BIKE shorts would soak up like a sponge, and I can't imagine running a 10k in bike shorts (wet, heavy ones)!? |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL So this afternoon I left the house on my bike and came back in the car with my wife. This is the first ride ending mechanical issue I've ever had. Not sure how it happened, but my rear derailleur (sp?) got sucked into my rear wheel and ripped clean off. Luckily it sheared at the hanger and there doesn't appear to be any frame, der, or wheel damage. I was also at a pretty low speed when it happened. My wife was kind enough to come pick me up. Several people stopped to see if I needed anything, one guy even turned around to see if I needed a lift and then offered me a new hanger he had in his truck. Not everyone was so kind, there were several shouts of unoriginal insults usually directed toward cyclists.

How does that work? do you just do laps of the pool? Yep, snake swim Every 10 seconds you start someone, swim to end then back, then under lane divider and repeat. There are alot in the area with pool swims, they also fill up in under a few hours. |

I think it is quite common for sprints to be raced in pools. Normally they have you snake down and back the lanes and then advance to the next lane, so on, down however many number of lanes to total the distance. In fact, I have never swam in open water for a race, so I am nervous about that. The disadvantage about pool swims is that you are ordered by a swim time you submit, and if people are not honest with thier swim times, you can get a lot of log jams in the pool. (But at least you can see the bottome and it SHOULD not be a full body contact - as in ows) Matt, that is a real bumber about your derailleur. How bazaar. Did you recently have work done on it, or bang your bike against something that would have loosened the contact? |

My "sit" muscles hurt for about a week since they get the brunt of your weight, but after that I have no issues. If you are patient you can pick one up really cheap, I on the other hand bought mine at the LBS when I got my bike fit done and paid way too much... And I hear ya on the log jam, I had to stop 4 times in my last sprint due to people not entering correct swim times. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL No work done recently, but I only have about 150 miles on it so it could be cable stretch from the break-in period allowed it to drift too far. The worst part, at least in my mind, is that my favorite shop closed recently (I got the bike for a screamin' closeout deal) and I don't really like any of the other shops in town. I guess it's kind of like politics and i'll just have to cast my vote for the lesser of the evils. |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I used my tri shorts for the first time today. What a weird feeling. I loved the extra support on my legs but even the small amount of padding in the backside felt like a diaper at first. I have taken a couple of swimming lessons and what a difference I can see already. I thought I was swimming pretty good before now I'm like a fish. Well maybe one in very shallow water but a fish all the same |

Wow, you must be as bored at work as I am! Me too, I don't think my boss would be too pleased if he knew exactly how much. I just look at it with the perspective that I'm really efficient at the things I do need to get done. What did people do at work before the internet? I went to the gym for a swim this morning and the pool was HOT. The girl at the desk said it was 88*. I'm guessing they switched to measuring in *C because it felt like they were trying to make stew. I ended up cutting the swim short and will try to get another one in over the weekend. Update on the bike: You'd think that the bike industry would standardize something like a derailleur (I think I spell it differently every time) hanger - I mean they put them on every single bike. I've been to three shops and looked at literally hundereds of different hangers, none of which were a match. So now I have to wait a week for one to come in. So much for my plan of doing my first brick this weekend. Good luck to all the racers this weekend. I'm jealous and can't wait until it's my turn - though I'm probably not quite ready yet. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hrm the weekend. It has rained here pretty much continuously for 2-3 weeks now, the rivers are overflowing their banks and all my trail runs are covered in that thick mud that makes your shoes weigh 30 pounds each after 100 yards. The good news, I am not sick anymore, for the longest period of time since January (6 days now). Bad news, my left foot has not grown that skin back that I took off of it last Saturday quite fast enough. And, I had to return my new swim wetsuit after the first time out because the seam was coming out. Not very impressive. So, for the weekend. I think I will start with a short 4-5 mile run on Friday, a 13 mile run on Saturday and a 40 mile bike ride on Sunday. Hopefuly I can get through my week 1 of my training plan without having to give up any workouts. I will suck it up and get the new shoes I love wet in the rain. I guess I need to get a few more pair so I can keep 1 pair for non-rainy days and one for mudbaths. Then, hopefuly I can get my replacement wetsuit in pretty quickly so I can add in my thrashing in the water to make it more closely resemble swiming. How long does it take to be able to swim a mile with some level of confidence from well scratch ? I can't really sign up for an Oly untill I can get that swimming taken care of. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL My $0.02 on the swim. It took me about 3 months of swimming 2-3 times a week to reach 250yds non stop comfortably. And that was starting from nothing. Then I hit 1000 yds about 2 months later, and I hit my first 2000yds this month (5 months later). With each milestone I was not as pooped at the end as compared to the first one. For example, with this last 2000 yd mark, my arms were a little tired at the end, but I could have done it again the next day. As compared to the 250yd mark, when I would do that I had to take a serious 2-3 minute break before doing my cool down and was glad I didn't have to swim the next day. So if you keep up your overall training and fitness level, the swimming will improve. Just make sure you are focusing on improving your technique, not the distance. I found that to be the key. With the technique CAME the distance. My very first tri ever was last October as a mini-sprint and now I am doing my first Olympic in September. Igo is doing his first race ever as an IronMan!! Crazy Ben does a race every weekend! Therefore I am a true believer in my signature, "Whether you think you can or can't, your right." Keep it up! Edited by tahrens 2008-05-30 10:47 AM |

Alot depends on technique. If you have good technique and aren't wasting alot of energy just trying to keep yourself alfloat it will be much easier. That is what made things alot easier for me. Once I wasn't dragging my legs it came much quicker. |
