Any advice on how to get faster on a bike without changing the equipment??

You need T.I.T.S.!  (time in the saddle)

The only way to get faster is to push yourself harder and .... go faster.  As stupid as that sounds, that's how it works.  I'd get outdoors as often as you can.  Spinning is an alternative, but it's not a substitute for real cycling.  There's lots of skills and muscle groups you're not working when you're indoors.

And ride with other people who are faster than you.  They'll force you to push yourself.  Most people get very comfortable with a certain pace/effort/group and they never get outside of the comfort zone.

work = discomfort = growth = speed

Hmmmm.... I was thinking, that something like this will come... And it makes sense.... There is one group around here that does an average of 15 miles/h... I guess, I will head out with those guys soon... It's not a far stretch, but a stretch....

On tap for this week is

5 days of running, for a total of 4h30ish

3 trainer ride of 1 hour or more each

3 swimming session, should be around 5500 meters or so for the week

I might skip my double workout Saturday (Swim and run) because I will probably do an Aquathlon. It's a 750 meters swim and a 3 km run after that.

Shoud be fun.

Hello everyone!!  I've been reading thru the posts for the last few minutes.  Looks like everyone has stayed on their schedules!!!  Wish I could say the same.  I've literally been around the world and am sitting in Qatar right now.  This is my first log on for about 2.5 weeks.

Running is still going well (you always find a place to run), but bike and swim are out for now.  My plan is to continue to run as often as possible and weight train.  I'm headed north of Kuwait in a few days and won't have access to anything except a gym, my running shoes (boots) and stationary bike.

Thank you for allowing me to join the group.  I will keep updating as I can log on.  Keep training hard to reach the goals you've set for yourselves.  You are the one that takes care of yourself.  At 43 years young, I firmly believe that you are what you make yourself!!!

Aaron, when I get back to Oklahoma, I still want to come down and do a one-on-one run clinic.

Please keep our Soldiers in your thoughts and prayers!!!

Michael

So all this low HR, slow running I have been doing paid off on my run on Wednesday. I start some speed training this week, still but much but I have my 1/2marathon in 3 weeks.

I have never given it that much thought.  Cut out caffeine this summer on a detox (due to the processed sugars, dependancy on caffeine, and the calories....not to mention the $$$ when you add up all the cokes/dr peppers at meals).

So coffee...Here is my coffee story: I work at a large 24/7 business. I came from finance and before that marketing where my schedules were fairly flexible and I could work as I pleased. Not here, when I first started I learned about the business, all the computer systems, and whatever on a 6a-2p shift then moved to 4p-12a. At some point in there I started drinking coffee. I did not like it. However I saw it as a better option to diet coke, coca-cola or vault.

My company provides us food/drink for free. I drank the coffee black for a long time. I drank at work and stayed away from caffeine otherwise.  Then it moved to work + prerace. When I first had it prerace, I found that there was good coffee and I enjoyed it. However I believe there is bad coffee, great coffee and then everything else in the middle. Now I work 11a-7p. I make it myself in the mornings, and rarely drink it at work (We have a Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts on site as well as some smaller coffee place and all the Douwe Egberts brand we can drink for free).

For racing, I do taper. I start backing off 2 weeks outs and try to go completely caffeine free 1 week before hand. So that I can get a boost before a race. In some article/interview of Macca he said he never drank it before coming to America, then he got hooked. He cuts caffeine 1month out from races.  Now I drink 53x11 Coffee , its made by a cyclist. It is a smaller company, its good.

This week I am getting back in the pool.  Knee is still tight and a little sore, but getting better.  Went last night and feels pretty good today.  Hope to get on the bike soon, missing all these nice weather days, going to be getting hot before I know it.

Travel sun-tues.  Swim and run today, bike thurs, travel thurs night-mon night.

In terms of caffeine, I drink coffee just about every morning.  I rarely drink soft drinks.  Drink a little coffee before a race to get things moving, otherwise I'm already amped up.  The GU 2x caffeine gels have too much caffeine for me so I avoid starting off with them.  Made the mistake of eating one before an evening swim, thought my head was going to explode.  Use the 2x in the middle of longer runs or rides for some extra pep.   So far I haven't been able to tell the difference between performance after eating a gu w/o caffeine vs a gu w/caffeine, but I'm a newb.

I like caffeine. But coffee/tea caffeine, not sodas. I've given it up on occassion, for a few months at a time, just to purge it out of my body. When deadlines loom and all-nighters beckon, it's a definite jolt.

I've never considered it as a training aid. For me, the most effective training tool is breakfast. I was never a morning eating guy until I started having oatmeal about 90 minutes before my morning workouts. I can definitely tell the difference on the days I skip it.

The rest of the week is going to focus on making up some lost workouts. I'll be stuck in a hotel for the next few days, so the plan is to get in as much gym work as I can.

My training is kinda low this week. I hurt my right foot earlier this week and the doctor asked me to stop running for at least a week, this is a huge part of my weekly workout as of now since I can't ride outside yet.

I hope I will get the permission to restart running soon, cause I hate not to to be honest :p

Congrats on the race, sounds like this is going to be a kick a$$ season for you.

This week going to get back swimming and try the trainer for a few times before I test the knee out on the open road.  With the pending weather, I need to get back out there and take advantage of the 70's and 80's coming up.

Restructuring my race plans for the season, not going to do the St. Patty's and also not do an early april race.  Planning on doing the Tour of Dallas to get out and have a fun ride with some friends and get that fun back after missing the early planned races.

Subject: wetsuit
My race next weekend is likely a wetsuit race, cold temps.  The distance between the water exit and the transition area is rather lengthy.  Should I completely shuck the wetsuit right out of the water, or just take the top part off until the transition area and finish taking it off there?

I have my half marathon a week from tomorrow. Looking for under 1:35. I should be good to go as long as I stick to my taper this week, last week I skipped a ride, run and rescheduled a run because of weather/work.  Then its some downtime before going hard into my training plan. Also have my PT now, so I will finally train with power.
