This is my first HIM and I'm working through a progressive program that it keeping me on pace by building distance, yet keeping me injury free..!!! Us 43+'ers kind of need to look out for good recovery and smart training. Weather is Southern Indiana has improved and long run and rides are increasing. I'm up to 2500m freestyle, 50 mi bike, and will run a half marathon the Sunday after Easter. I will say that although I'm not a program follow'er for P90-X, I do use some of the DVDs in my training. The Core Syn. and Yoga have actually helped me. I'm going to be using some products from Hammer Nutrition during my ride and run. I'll also use Cytomax in my hydration. Wish I'll have more time getting ready for 80 to 90 degree heat, but I'm just going to have to watch intake and pace. See you all very soon I hear you. I am not there on the swim yet but I am getting there. My bike is decently strong and my run feels good. I am concentrating on the swim and bike right now as much as I can. I would love to get the bike finished within three hours and the swim in less than 55 mins or so. I have been doing bike/run bricks for my entire training and I have no problem with my legs transitioning to the run from the bike. I think my biggest issue will be staying straight on the swim and the off road running. I have not idea what that will look like. I am training my run on the road only. |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Question for y'all. This is my first half distance race and I was wondering how the transitions work. Do we get bags like we do for the fulls? Do you have to set your stuff up by your bike like short races? I have only done iron-distance for triathlon. I have no experience at shorter distance tri's so I could really use some help figuring out how it works for these races. Thanks! |

From my limited experience with the HIM distance (Augusta 70. last September), I can tell you that you will set your items in a transition area under your bike... just like for shorter distance races. Unlike iron distance racing, there are no special needs bags. So whatever you think you'll need on the bike, you have to take with you when you leave T1. I don't recall their being any changing tents either, so you might want to take that into consideration when planning your race outfit. Good luck to you! |

That surprises me as I would think at least some of the people would want to swim in swimsuits and change into bike shorts. I will probably just do the whole thing in my tri-suit anyways but that is still surprising. Never done the transition by the bike thing. I guess I will have to practice laying that out. I really like how they do things for the full distance iron races with a bag, changing area, and individual volunteer to help you out. Guess I have been spoiled. Can't wait for the race, 43 days and counting! |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread erinmac - 2010-04-09 9:18 AM hi way cool. i'm off at 6:36. got plenty of time to finish this year!!! Unfortunately I will be in one of the last 3 waves. I am not a fan of sitting on the beach that long but oh well. My brother will be going out before me. Depending on which wave we each get in he will have a 21-30 minute head start on me. We tend to be pretty close pace wise so I am not sure if I can run him down. At least it gives me a rabbit to chase and keep me on pace. Just wish he was a little closer! |

Not that it really matters; it's just fun to have the number for some reason. Makes it "more real" I guess... |

Champion 6046 New York, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread oh wow SHOCKED I am in wave 5 - the second AG wave. As an old lady I am usually waiting until the end - KEWL!!!!! my knee is not happy with biking, then tried a really easy run last night (10 min pace) and managed 3 miles without it feeling worse.... going to try to get an MRI to see what is up - if it is just a bone bruise those take forever to heal and I will just suck it up and work through the pain....regardless I won't be at my best pace but maybe I will not have to DNF..... Veteran 184 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Interesting way to set up the waves... anybody know the strategy involved in this? It seems so much different than the few races we've done- pro's first obviously makes sense, but after that it seems all mixed up? I'm actually glad to be starting in one of the last waves, I'll enjoy not getting passed by as many people this way.... or I guess I should think I'll just have more people to try and catch during the race. |

I'm in the opposite boat, I'll have to weave through people. On the positive note, I should get to do alot of legal drafting on the bike. |

Extreme Veteran 546 Oakland, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread I am a slow swimmer so I love my wave position. I am doing a OWS Saturday morning of 1.2 miles to see what kind of time I am looking at and then a 60 mile ride on a big portion of the disney course.. I have not worked at all on speed for swimming but I can do the distance without any problems. The temps here in Florida are back to normal. |

Veteran 184 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Legal drafting sounds good to me! I'm not one of them, but I would think the M 30-34 would have some of the strongest athletes, so putting them last seems unusual. Unless the assumption is they'll all make the swim cut-off and sending others groups earlier gives them a larger buffer? Is that logical? |

Unless the assumption is they'll all make the swim cut-off and sending others groups earlier gives them a larger buffer? Is that logical? That is one thing I don't like about the wave starts. I am in that last group and although I am comfortable with the time cut-off I am sure there are those who will cut it close. Why can other age groups get an unlimited amount of time for their swim and the last wave could have their day ended if they are a minute late. Doesn't seem fair to me. I know it would be probably impossible to police but every wave should get the same amount of time to get out of the water. Just my 2 cents. Although I cannot claim to be one of the strongest athletes I will take your generalization of the M30-34 group and pretend that I am |

Good news for me... 1) I get 40 minutes to watch other people start (this is my first open water swim!) 2) I'm starting only 3 minutes after the hubby... so I should catch him on the bike 3) I get a sweet purple cap... my fav color. Seriously though, I'm happy to be starting so close to my hubby, we might be able to stick together for most of the race. |

Took the last two weeks off because I was so burned out I couldn't stand training anymore. I'm way undertrained for this race, but I'm doing it for the fun and experience, so I'm not worried. Just coming to finish. |

If you click on the link I provided in the previous post it will take you to the list which shows the order by age group. If there are multiple waves in your age group (like mine M30-34) then you won't really find out which one your in until you show up race week. Even if you have multiple age group waves you will generally know when you are going. |
