Veteran 239 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Kansastriguy - 2011-05-09 4:58 PM Good work everyone! Impressive workouts, indeed. REECEALAN: may I ask how long it took you to complete your 56 mile ride? I'm looking for some comparison to my rides. Wind is such a huge factor for me out here on the Central Kansas prairie. I hit 35 MPH with a 30 mph tailwind (45 mph gusts), then turned into it and slowed to 13 mph in a baby gear. 55 miles took me 3' 2". Thankfully, there's still 5 weeks left. It will be a fluke not to have wind on race day. I may be coming to the realization that 20 mph average with wind and Douglas County hills may be a bit of a stretch for this flat lander with an older model aluminum Trek 1200 road bike. TRIPLEBYPAT: Impressive ride in headwind and rollers! What mph was headwind? Did it slow you down significantly? The weather "experts" said winds were variable 10-20 and some higher gusts. Really, the slowing happened mainly on the climbs into the wind... because of the soreness in the shoulder left over from the bike wreck, I was in and out of the aeros quite a bit; whenever I came up off the aeros I felt like I was a mainsail taking it in the face. |

Veteran 239 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Kansastriguy - 2011-05-10 4:57 PM I'm not sure. The "hill" I "climb" is probably 200 ft higher than the rest of the ride and it's approx 1 mile long. I climb it 4 times on a 13 mile loop route.
I think if you were to use MapMyRide or something similar, you can get an elevation map in addition to the route map... pretty helpful in the training plan. we have used it to document a ride we do when riding out to Luckenbach - quite a few rollers and some good climbs. |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Thank you all so much. I feel like I've gotten to know you all and I have loved keeping track of your progress. Thank you for sharing your stories with me as well. It gives me hope that even though I might have some major recovering to do, that I can eventually come back and be stronger. Even if I get a HIM done later this year....I know that next year I will be back at Kansas. I just feel it's something I need to do. So with that said, I hope you all consider coming back and helping me do it next year as well. I'm still going to be on here because I am looking forward to hearing how everyone's training goes from here on out....as well as how you do in Kansas. Pitbullzz, I have no doubt we will run into each other down the road....and I can't wait. You've been fun. Good luck with those twins too. Train safe everyone. |

Member 15 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread RazorTri, I was at the KC Tri last year (great event) and the water was very cold. Imagine it will be the same this year. Hopefully you'll have a wetsuit. Several were also wearing the wetsuit caps. If you don't have a wetsuit, it won't be that big of a deal - you'll just be like the guy standing next to me in the water before the race, shaking from head to toe, yelling things at himself that no one should ever have to hear. Good luck! Also, just read that Chrissie Wellington cracked a rib in a bike crash...hopefully she'll still make it to IMKS. Even with a broken leg I imagine she'd still beat me by about 2 hours! |

I bought my Dinner ticket the second I got the email, don't want to pass up meeting such an individual. I grew up in CA and swam in the pacific in pretty cold condtions, not sure how low it was but most other surfers/boarders were wearing wetuits, I was O.K. without one. Course that was 30 years ago..... |

With only 60 spots, I'm sure they sold out quick. Wesuits? Oh well, guess I'm gonna be cold. I guess it'll wake me up and get me goingAll this talk about cold water makes me glad I bought a wetsuit. Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Completed the Gateway Triathlon yesterday in Carlyle, IL. I finished, but struggled through a windy bike course. I'm still waiting for my official splits, but finished in around 3:03-3:05. Not quite where I had hoped to be. I am definitely rethinking my goal time. On the positive side of things, I definitely still had fuel in the tank. |

Hmm on that facebook page it sounds like the coordinators are backing out? Huh. If my memory serves, I don't recall any gas stations or places to re-fill water (which is why I was looking forward to the mini-aid station that is usually set up at the Iron Cross intersection...). I guess I plan on loading up my bike and jersey pockets with lots of water. |

Veteran 419 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I am planning on going out Saturday and riding the course as well. Hope to get a decent run in after too. I went out a couple weeks ago and "rationed" water. Did the course on just my aero bottle and one other bottle. It was cool to start that day and I was ok. The people I rode with and I left a cooler with water at the "iron cross"- but it was stolen by the time we got there from parking our cars- just fyi. If it is warm- I will just cram a couple bottles in my jersey. I like 8 as a start better than 7 and I am just driving from KC! |

Member 9 KANSAS CITY | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Does anyone know if the dinner with Chrissie is sold out yet? Do you have a link to buy tickets? I deleted that email.... and now changed my mind on dinner that night! So after 3+ months of training, I might not be in KS for my 4th year in a row. Sunday I was on a training run.... minding my own business when I was bitten by a Chihuahua (yes he was even on a leash and everything!!!) While I was trying to get away, I did something to my opposite foot. Now in the boot for this week (great timing with the peak training!!) and going to PT in hopes that I may be able to pull this off. Honestly, it's not looking good. So I thought I would treat myself to dinner with Chrissie! Since I'm already down about this whole thing.... it will give me something to look forward to. Happy....and safe training during these last few weeks!!! |

Nothing out of the ordinary comes to my mind. Pretty standard stuff. The campsite does have showers, so that is a good feature. The only oddity that comes to mind is when a tandem rotor military helicopter landed near the expo mid-day Saturday last year and the wind generated from it took out some nearby campsites. Prepare for that as you see fit. |
