Carol -- great article. What struck me most was the line about "you are likely in the top 10% of the US regarding fitness". Never thought of it that way, regardless of weather it was true. I've never thought of myself as anything close to 'gifted' - first person I thought of was Lance Armstrong.

In the end I guess there is something to be said for putting yourself out there, to train and try to reach a goal you thought was unreachable or impossible not long ago. Even the MOP/BOP age groupers like myself who are in this for fun & fitness can take a smile away from this. Especially when we're told we are crazy or insane for attempting what we set out to do.

Steve, that'll be awesome the three of us doing the same Ironman again! This time we will have to get together! They don't have the course up yet, but last year I remember viewing the course and it was relatively flat as in a total elevation gain of about 2500 ft so definitely not too bad! Yes, the water will be cold, but can't be worse than Oceanside!

Been a rough week, the stress of work and the economic situation caused me to skip about 4 days (Thurs-Sunday). Now I am second guessing my Sprint Tri on Jun 9th. I am signed up for a mini-tri this weekend. It will be my first one. Physically I am ready but might be a little burned out.

Been a runner for 10 years and last couple of weeks I have just felt like Running is what I need to stick to.  I like biking, but its a hassle to find a safe place, love swimming but that's another $50 a month to join the Y. I am torn with what to do after this Race.. Doing the Sprint Tri means crossing over to open water swims,  I admit I am not comfortable training for the OWS.

It is just 400 yards so i may just wing the OWS for the race in JUNE just to get to the Bike and Run, which I have done for the most part in Brick workouts.

Monday and Tuesday were treadmill/exercise bike. Got in the pool for a bit Wednesday. Today I ran five miles and it felt great. I guess I am suffering from newbies regret.

Carol: thank you for that article. He last paragraph said it all.faspina: I don't think there's a single triathlete that hadn't felt what you are feeling at some point or another. it can be a roller coaster this TRI-thing that we are all attempting. It has it's frustrations, it's expensive... Gear, gym(s), reg fees, etc. Tri's shows us our weeknesses & fears. And its scary! But we have to hold onto he fact that we have the strength to get It done even in our crazy-busy lives...if we stay committed. Someone on BT has a quote that has become my favorite motivation. It says "Have strength. Stay committed. What you are seeking is also seeking YOU." Keep up your hard work. Because you are working... Hard. Looking forward to hearing obout your first Tri!

This morning, at the end of my swim workout, one of the guys pulled out a bungee cord, attached it to the starting blocks and tied the other end around my waist (he asked forst, don;t want this to sound like I was surprised or anything LOL). He then said, "see if you can swim a lap with this". I didn't feel anythin until about 3/4 of the way, then I could tell I wasn't going anywhere!

But I kept swimming until  couldn;t swim no more!

It was nice being gently dragged back to the starting block, but it was a vry cool experience. One I am going to start working into my workouts maybe once a week or so!

Carol - nice article! I have self doubt most of the time, at the gym I'm still regularly the largest girl in the room and the instructors come over to check on me several times a class! I know that I'm making progress, but, truthfully I'm a wimp. (last year, before the tri-bug hit, i used to make my husband go get the car if he parked 'too far') Trying to find that inner athlete!

James - been thinking about getting some kind of bungee cord to swim in the neighbors pool (with their permission!) so that I can do some practice runs including transition set up,etc. was considering just using my resistance bands somehow....

These were designed for the swim team that practices at the pool, so I'd be careful, I'd hate to get smacked in the back of the head by a handle!

I did two sprints ten years ago, but I'm am pretty new to this triathlon thing.  I'd been cruising along until this week, and it's kicking my A&&%.  I've lost 69 pounds so far, and am trying to lose 31.  I'm trying to cut 2000 net calories a week to lose 4 pounds a week.  It's working so far, but it's getting tougher.  Kudos to all the triathletes in our group.  This sport can be tough

Hang in there gang, ther are ups and downs.  Ya a sprint tri is not that long if you train for it.  Most of your runs should be around 3 to 5 miles and your bike rides should be 15 to 25 miles with swims up to 1000.  You do the distance 3x a week so on race day it is just putitng it all together and your body will remember the distances and not let you down.

I did a 2 mile jog today, thighs still tight from those hills on the run, but shins and calves were ok, just kept it easy.  (mantra will not do too much too fast this year after races).

Next race is probably a 4 mile trail run in 3 weeks.  Ya I won't be in peak shape for it, but it is relatively close.  It is where my sig picutre is from and I won there last year so hard to give up an event where I think I can podium 8).

On of the guys at the HIM I did last weekend has done St. George and said the Napa course was much tougher......   so its not just me then.

This being sick thing is getting old fast. My sinus/ear thing has me on the shelf for a couple days, and yesterdays brick wasn't done, and this AM's swim & run are still a TBD. Kind of hard to do either when every time you breath you cough or hack up a lung chunk. Crappy night's sleep as well due to post nasal drip. Overall, not feeling great, but hopefully in a day or two it is all behind me, and I'm back on track.

Ceril, I love it, bungee swimming!  OK, well, I love it for you, but not for me.  Tried swimming with an inner tube around my ankles as part of swim class, and have not been too keen on anything resembling that since.

Mike, hope you are on the mend, but can't rush those things too much or you set yourself back further.

Steve, glad you are easing back in rather than fueling the injury cycle.

I'm easing back in too.  Went to a ribbon cutting on a new section of multi-use path last night, and part of that was a short bike ride.  Beautiful evening, and rode with a friend I met here on BT.  First OWS late this afternoon, and have a 35ish mile bike ride planned for in the morning.  Group swears it's easy pace as many of them are doing a sprint tri on Sunday.  Hope they are not lying, and their easy is not my "OMG, what was I thinking coming on this ride?" pace.

OK, so I'm having one of those "you know you're a triathlete when" moments.  I need to meet a realtor with a potential buyer for my FIL's house right after swimming.  Haven't even listed the house yet, so there's no box on the door.  No time to clean up or come home first, so I'll be taking my lake dredged self over there just as I am.  Figuring compared to me, the house will look even better!

Don't you just love doing things you never said or thought you'd do?  Ha, ha, I do think trying on tri clothes is the scariest part of all of this .  Sent me screaming from the dressing room at Sun & Ski the first time I ever tried it.

I felt the same way when I put on the wetsuit.  Swam 1500 yards today, 700 drills and then 1 x 800.  I am taking baby steps in the pool, but the swim coach is paying off.

3 mile run today (8:19 pace).  Leggs dead at the start like an IM run, but loosened up a bit as the run went on.

Triathletes are very gracious folks.  Just being out there earns you respect.  A tri suit is very functional, it reduces chafing and reminds those of us who still need to lose some pounds that ya we need to lose some pounds to look good in these things.

Ok, who has questions?  There must be something you really want to know but were afraid to ask, like what does DNF, DNS, DFL, HTFU, BOP, MOP, FOP, Brick, fartleks, repeats, hillwork, mean, LT, LTH, Z1, 2 3 4 5, SR, tempo run, etc.

I've got one, Steve.  I'm basically doing the Fink Beginner's Ironman training for my during the week training for my half ironman, and am following your suggestions for the long stuff on the weekend.  There is one brick scheduled on Wednesdays, but it is only 45 minute bike/15 minutes run.  Assuming I am doing the long bike and run on the weekend, working up to 65 miles and 15 miles respectively, is that a long enough brick.  thanks

During IM Canada about 12 years ago I was wearing swim tights underneath my wetsuit and when the wetsuit strippers pulled my wetsuit off me, my swim shorts came off with them! So, during Oceanside 70.3. I figured I would wear my tri-suit underneath my wetsuit then put my bib and cycling top over it during the bike. It worked great until I had to pee (sorry if that offends anyone) I had so many layers on because it was 45 degrees out during the bike that I literally had to get off the bike and completely undress! Definitely not the time saver I thought it would be, but I didn't expose myself after the swim!!

So I don't drink Caffeine or energy drinks or anything like that but  Thursday night was my anniversary and I was very tired so I drank one of those 5 hour energy drinks.  Well, not a good idea.  I had an allergic reaction and got very sick.  I still feel hungover from it and it's Saturday already!!!  I just feel terrible and can't even train from this headache and jitters.  I never felt anything like this and hope it goes away soon!  Supposed to run 11 miles today but I'm not going to do it. I'm afraid my heart will explode or something..  Supposed to do a 60 mile bike ride with Jim tomorrow but not sure about that either.

Totally ruined my training for the week Cry

Ha, Jim, thanks for giving me something else to worry about.  Beware the wetsuit strippers!

Mitch, hope you feel better soon.  I'm afraid I am a total caffeine addict and it doesn't even phase me.

Re-entry into tri training after being very run focused has my confidence down.  OWS yesterday included the roughest conditions I've ever been in.  White caps and 2 foot waves after a cool front blew through.  Bailed before the normal turnaround and walked back.  Several others did the same thing, and only the strongest swimmers made it all the way.  New rule: if the kite surfers are having an awesome day, I have no business swimming!  Bike ride this morning....thankfully decided to skip the 35 mile ride I had thought about doing, and go for a 25 mile shop ride.  Slow group leader didn't show up, so I hung with the pack as long as I could and then dropped off the back with a few other stragglers.  Took the shortest option back to the shop.  Downloaded the garmin expecting to see 16 mph or so avg, and it was 15.3.  Off to go re-read the "gifted athlete" article I posted.

Question on re-entry:

I'm on day 3 of feeling like garbage and missingn training, but there is hope on the horizone. Looking to get something done tomorrow. I've missed a short bike/run brick, a swim, a moderate run, and my long bike the past 3 days. Tomorrow is long run day, but I'm thinking I may do a moderate run (an hour) and a short bike (an hour) to get back in the swing. Or should I just go out and do the long run, even if its a run w/ occasional run?

Mike, when is your race and what kind of a race is it? I didn't feel that great this week. overstretched it a bit last week, and I missed several workouts but I don't have a race for 5 months so I will not try to make those up! I went for my long run this morning and ran 8 miles instead of 12, mostly because it's really stinking hot here right now (95+) and I know I will need my strength for a punishing bike ride if Mitch comes out tomorrow!

I missed 3 weeks 2 months before Ironman last year because of a low back issue I have and to be honest I came back fresher and stronger! I would say ease back into your training the next couple days to ensure you've recovered the turn it on!!

Larry it should be fine.  Alternatively you could throw a 3 - 4 mile run on the end of your long bike to get a better feel for what it will be like.  Just shift your wed brick run portion over to the weekend.  It is not a huge deal you just need like 4 bricks the last month of your build to be good with it.

Jim, 45 F onto the bike should be fine with just a tri suit or possibly a bike jacket that you can ditch at the special needs bag at mile 56.  If you are a 15 mph biker you want the jacket, if 17 mph + you are probably ok without, but it also depends if it is going to rain or get hot quickly.

Mike if you feel up to it ide lean toward the long run even if you are going to walk some of it.  Run fitness is harder to maintain than bike fitness.  If you are smoked cut it short, plan on a loop you can bail from. Listen to your body, if you are smoked after 3 miles then just call it.

My worst illness during training was before my first half mary, I went about 3 months only being able to eat crackers and drink pediasure due to some wierd stomach thing.  I was only able to get in 2-3 runs a week but survived the half mary.  Also I had a calf issue before IM CDA so I had to walk for 5 weeks, no run, then build for 2 1/2 weeks walk jog.  My longest continuous jog was 10 miles before an IM.  I was able to jog the entire IM mary.  However, a vollunteer said at the aid station at mile 18, "I hope you are on your second lap."  I was like I look that bad do I?

So ya you can take some time to feel good, just walking is fine if you are smoked, don't do any intensity when you are getting back into it just get the body moving, even if just for a short time.  I the greater scheeme of things a couple days here or that is not going to break your training.  It is the 4 months leading up to the race overall.  That said you don't want to miss all of your long runs and bikes 8).

36 mile bike ride for me today at a 20 mph pace.  My first ride outside other than the race since October.  Was nice steady 20mph pace the whole way.  It was an unusual day in that the winds were not that hard.  Also, I was happy to have replaced my front shifter cable all by myself, yay ($3).  I guess I should plan on changing those every 2 years whether they need it or not, because they probably do. What I noticed though was that the air was much drier, so I went through a lot more water than I thought I would.  Stay safe guys take lots of water on the bike.
