Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED It's Ne w Year's Day here!! I'm giddy about 2013. So much going on. I'm going to make it an amazing year.
Today I have a short, 4 mile run on schedule and I hope to get some strength training in. Pool's closed and we have both surf and jellyfish advisories out, so no swimming. Enjoy ringing in the new year! |

Regular 134 Wichita, KS | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Got back from a week in Breckenridge, CO. Ate and drank too much but at least the snowboarding burnt some of that off. I did the equivalent of a sprint Tri today (1000 yard swim, 10k bike and 5k run). Felt good even with the week off. Hoping to get in some strength training today before the ball drops. I'm really getting motivated reading your posts, guys. Thanks and Happy New Year. |

Overall a pretty good year from me. My most significant change this year over past years is consistency, as others have said, this is extremely important. Next year I aim to focus more on swim and bike fitness, while keeping close to the same running volume. Happy New Year! I look forward to everything this mentor group will offer over the coming months. Jim

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED 2012 is in the books with a swim and easy bike today. Missed 6 weeks of running at the end of the year. Otherwise pretty pleased with 2012 in general. Run/bike training was focused on quality with more intensity but less volume. Swim number is surprisingly high for me and is probably attributed to fact that 99% of the times I went to the pool I had a specific workout with me. Hoping everyone stays safe tonight and is ready for a fantastic 2013.

No swimming for me today either. I had all the new drills planned out and was excited to get to the gym but it was closed when I got there. It's a Community Center and is usually closed on holidays-I just didn't know they considered today a holiday. Took a run around the neighborhood instead. Tomorrow I plan to start the new year with a bike and run. Happy New Year, Everyone! |

Must have been that slow magic mile that did it! My goal for 2013 is to drop the pace on the Magic Mile. 2012 was a good year! Can't wait to see what 2013 brings! Happy New Year!! |

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED My very first event was Dec 16th so I have been taking the last two weeks off. I tried a bit of running, very badly and a few recovery rides only. No real training. So my wife reminds me today that the two weeks ended yesterday! Back on the bike for a real ride today. A 17 miles route a I take often with a hill at mile 3 and another at mile 15. The cool weather and a 7 MPH wind made all the more ... uhhh ... fun? Came in just under 58 minutes. Not earth shattering for most but a decent ride for me under the circumstances. My wife and I will start up again with a daily 20 minute yoga routine in addition to any training. It really helps me feel like working out the next day. Also signed up for my next event, a sprint in April. Please everyone have a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New year and if you are going out...BE SAFE! |

Guess I've got to up my game this year. To all the newbies, please record all your training. I didn't think it was a big deal when I began but it is nice to look back and see how far you have came. |

I'm happy with my yearly totals, since it was my first year. It's going to be nice to compare next year's to these!

Psyched for 2013 thanks to you all in this group. I've never really trained for anything seriously before and I'm a little nervous! Congrats on all your 2012 hard work. Let's kick in 2013! |

No you are not alone on this one. Because my early focus was to lose weight and general conditioning I just did what I felt like doing without a plan or log. I don't even have a calendar of my workouts. I guess I have just a mild edge having trained seriously for years but only mild since that was over three decades ago. For 2013 I have a plan and will keep track.

Veteran 218 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Wow, you all are tough. I had a terribly inconsistent year. I am amazed at how little training I did this year. I guess having 3 1/2 months of no running didn't help. And lots of that time I let my brain get to me and didn't train much at all just because I felt sorry for myself. My year's totals are: Swim - 72132.00 Yd - 22h 02m 39s Bike - 382.21 Mi - 53h 10m 46s (counting spin class time, no miles) Run - 376.92 Mi - 63h 11m 32s So, the goals this year are to get at least 800 miles running, lots more biking and close to double the yards swimming. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Wow. A little too much fun for me last night. I haven't drank like that in at least 10 years and I am paying the price right now. It reminds me why it has been 10 years. Hope I can feel well enough later to get in some training. For now, the couch is feeling pretty good. |

Most ever for me swimming and cycling. Not my best ever on the run but not far off either. The bike is 90% + on the trainer so the numbers may be a little off but close enough. I hope to keep it up in 2013--but not this morning....... |

Extreme Veteran 356 Albany/Saratoga, NY area | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I had the best run this morning and I wanted to share. Not because I ran a really long ways or I set a PR but just because I got caught up in the quiet peacefulness of the morning and to me workouts like that are the reason I keep doing this. I really only went out for a 2 mile run. Where I live I'm a little less than a mile from a waterfront area where the Hudson and Mohawk rivers meet the Erie canal. from there I can cross a bridge to the island where my great-grandmother lived when her family came here from Europe. It's now a wildlife preserve with a trail that goes around the perimeter of the island. I had planned today to just cross the bridge and turn around but ás I ran through the quiet neighborhoods and over the bridge I couldn't resist the lure of the trail. I still only ran 2 miles and then walked another 2 home (I have a bike workout this morning too) but it was just so beautiful this morning I was thankful for whatever it is inside of me that compels me to go out on a morning where most people stay in. I even stopped for a few pics which I'll share below. The quality kind of suck because I took them on my cell phone. Anyone else have training moments like that? Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Nicole -- great pics. I get the same feeling every time I see a deer when I run -- don't know why, but something about how quiet and graceful they are when they run (just like me!) Every time I see one, you can see my pace speed up a little bit. Got in my first workout of 2013 as well -- braved the outdoors for the first time since October. Beautiful day -- chilly but not too bad (-2C / 28F), brilliant blue skies, the Rockies were on display in full force. Ran my usual 6K loop around the block (0.5K walk, 5K run, 0.5K walk) and almost matched my best ever time, despite the chilly weather. Biggest problem I had was breathing in the cold -- felt out of breath much more easily -- need to re-learn pacing. Happy new year all! Scott. |

Too much red wine and staying up way past my bed time didn't help! Jason and I worked hard last night to set an example of what not to do to start the new year out the right way......the sacrifices we make Nap time and then an easy run later. Great pics Nicole!
