Brad, James and Stuart: thinking of doing an X50 about 4-5 weeks before I do my 70.3. Your thoughts? I am thinking of not racing it (maybe), but using that as my test before I attack my 70.3 What are you thoughts on those two being so close together? To me it sounds smart.
X50 is a local race that's a bit longer than an OLY and a bit shorter than a HIM..... From the standpoint of doing something like that 35-ish days out, it would be fine...as long as you're doing it and not racing it. Might be good to use that as a "getting nutrition dialed in" day vs. "I'm going to blow though this as fast as I can". My longest week is 6 weeks before my IM so I can taper accordingly. Again...use it as a trianing/nutrition day vs. I'm going for a podium spot. |

Again...use it as a trianing/nutrition day vs. I'm going for a podium spot. Agree with Brad 100% - use it as a 'long training day/practice nutrtion day'. I would pretend that it is your A race, in that you use EXACTLY the same pace you plan to use on race day. Seeing as the race is shorter in distance, you should get to the end with some in the tank. Focus on nutrition exactly as you will in the race. I follow Joe Friel's methodology, so My longest day will be the Saturday of build 2 week 3, in what he calls a 'big day' - 1 hour swim at race pace, 5 hour bike ride race pace, 2 hour run race pace, each separated by 90mins recovery. This day is followed by a recovery week, then a 3 week taper. Taper length depends on race distance and your current training level. Longer race = longer taper. Higher training load at peak= longer taper. Remember the taper is to reduce fatigue while maintaining fitness. If your taper is too long, you will lose too much fitness, if too short you will not be recovered enough. I did a 16 day taper for my HIM, and I feel that due to my training load not quite being where I had planned it to be, this was a little bit too long. For me, 2 weeks would have been enough, but it is very individual. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am totally lacking swim motivation at the moment. Had a swim scheduled both today and yesterday morning but didn't get up for either. I'm feeling pretty fatigued, but I really need to put the effort in this week, to earn my recovery week next week. Cycling and running both going well. Did 4.5 hours bike on Sunday (115km, 72mi) - my longest ever! And ran 2 hours on Saturday for 19km (12miles). Just swimming is so meh. |

I missed two swims last week. When I got in the water this week, I found it enjoyable! I never thought I would say that. But it really was. When you're feeling fatigued, listen to your body! Our bodies know better than our training schedules. |

personally, if there is a workout I would prefer to miss, it would be the swim. Not because I like it the least, but to me it is the smallest portion of the race IMO. So many people just want to get through the swim that their race really starts with the bike. I for one and comfortable with my swim, which is why I only swim twice a week. If I had to rank the areas I needed to work on them most it would be 1.run 2. bike and 3. swim. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all, I'm getting in here late, and I do appreciate you all making room for me. I've been doing tri's for a few years now, and my focus now is for a half in April, and a full in July. I attempted a full last year and blew up on the bike and missed the cut off , something I don't want to do again. |

Welcome Ken, better late than never! Currently we are all on a core/Ab challenge for February, as this is an often missed part of our workouts. Please feel free to jump in any time and contribute or ask a question, vent and try to get sympthy for missing a workout! LOL |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have decided that not all "Pain is weakness leaving the body" but instead some pain is telling you to stop and rethink this. So, much to my dislike, I putting a hold on running and biking till it doesn't hurt AS bad. Only trouble is I have an indoor TRI on the 16th, and I will not miss it. Abs are still going strong, I know I will be missing 2-3 days next week due to Parent/Teacher conferences
Really bad thing is here in KS we have been having 55-65 degree weather so I have been pouting to my wife about wanting to ride my new bike. She told me to take the Loritab the Dr. gave me a suck it up.

I think I will adhere to that as a great opport to dial in pace and nutrition as well as my mass start in an open water swim. A lot of good experience to be gained in this X50 race. Welcome Ken. This is a great group.

There is more action there than in a Die Hard movie. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So whats everybody's plans for the weekend ? I have a run and swim on Saturday , and a bike and run brick on Sunday, My focus for Sunday is my nutrition before my ride. I just never feel like eating much before hand and I need to change that. What do any of you eat before a long ride? |
![]() ![]() |
Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a 5k Valentine's day run I am doing with my wife, then I will finish my miles and run home. Sunday I have a long bike planned.
As far as eating beforehand, I never really eat big before a bike, but I do eat while I am hitting long bike rides. |

Read about it here on my blog Daily Trainings BOOM! that is the sound of James dropping the challenge on us to sign up for our A races and not 'hoping' we get in shape for them. That is commitment. Congrats James. I may come up and do that 70.3 in OK. Maybe we can share a meal the evening before and take a short swim. Very cool. Weekend work? about to go run on trails (soft surface is needed today) here on Friday evening SAT: Swim in the morning, get bike from shop (fitted and new rear wheel) - hit the road for a 2-3 ride with a short TT in there as I get ready for a Stage Race next weekend SUN: maybe a run, but more bike miles if weather holds. Maybe 40?

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saturday: 100' on the trainer and maybe a quick weight circuit in the pm. Sunday: morning swim (speed work) and a long (8-10miles) run in the afternoon.
The swim and weight circuit are all depending on on gym/pool availability, in case you haven't heard we're getting some pretty serious snow up here in the northeast tonight. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bike question. What's he general rule for increasing mileage in the bike? Is it like running - 10% increase rule? That wouldn't be much added mileage on bike. I'm riding mostly 20-25 mi rides 2-3x a week. My personal goal this month is to ride 200 mi. ..I'm currently @ 78 (NOTE: more than the Mentors miles!!) :D. I'm comfortable with this mileage even tho I hate HATE the hills. |
