I just think its hard tell someone and even harder for someone to understand what is being communicated when just talking miles. But when you start looking at what was done during those miles you kinda get a much clearer picture. For example for my first IM I used don finks plan which was lots and lots of long zone 2 work. Second IM I used EN which had much more higher intensity but shorter work. I know this doesn't answer your question but I hope it helps explain what I meant.Another way to gauge where you want be is by time. Say biggest week is 15 hours of training. Throw in an additional 5 hours on top of that for time spent getting ready such as mixing nutrition, driving to the pool, etc.. I think lots of folks just starting out don't take this prep time into acct. especially folks like you and I with kiddosI do like David and Suzy's suggestions of checking out a couple of canned plans such as the ones on here or EN. There a few free ones out there now that have had success with. Maybe go with one of those for your first and then write you own for the second once you have a deeper understanding about long course racing. And drink beer. fattyfatfat - 2012-12-31 6:14 PM I am just trying to put together a training plan and was looking for a target to end at prior to the race.padarinsmith - 2012-12-31 12:28 PMWhat is a good amount of milage to have in prior to a HIM. Aye, had my last (few) beers last night. Going to be much more strict with my diet from here on out, including limiting the barley beverages. I can't bring my self to say I won't have any beer between now and race day, but I can say they will be limited to single digits between now and then! Happy New YEAR!!! |

Master 1841 Sendai, Japan | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Happy New Year!!! I got out for my first run of the year yesterday - just a short 4km run. I'm hoping to do some time on the trainer today to burn off some of the extra calories I picked up in the last week. No beer? No way. I can see cutting back a little, but I look at those beers as incentives for training. |

One of the funniest things on BT is people posting monthly and/ or annual miles. You rode 100 or 300 or 600 miles... So what? That number by itself is meaningless. What did you do with those miles and what are you training for. That's whats important. This goes for someone trying to break 10 hours at an IM or 45 minutes for a 5k And new folks should not be impressed at all by people that post this silliness. Edit.. New folks can learn a lot about what people Do with those miles, yards, meters, etc... By perusing the logs of Kim, Dino, Kyla, Suzy, Tony, etc.... Don't look at mine though!!!! padarinsmith - 2012-12-31 12:28 PMWhat is a good amount of milage to have in prior to a HIM. Long run?Long Bike?Weekly? How do I make the list? Let's not look at 12 - but go back to 11!!!! Off to sulk now.....after eating one AMAZING dinner cooked by 16 y/o son....a REAL measure of my success. ...still sulking..... just to make easier for y'all (southern talk, I think)
I may have forgotten how to swim in 2012. Dang....... And after some reflection.....swimming isn't fun right now. Need to get over that. Biking REALLY dropped - reflecting Boston training. Running - not so bad with 9 weeks off for a torn calf muscle - oh, and a broken toe. 8 1/2 months until Lake Tahoe - time to start panicking training!!!

Extreme Veteran 668 NW Georgia | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Figured I should get this done since I finally have access to a laptop again. NAME: David FAMILY STATUS: Married with an eighteen month-old son. 2012 RACES: They're listed on my training log page. 2013 RACES: So are these; but tentatively a HM in Feb, the Pittsburgh HM in May, IM Augusta 70.3 in September and IMFL in November. And possibly the Rev3 Williamsburg in June if schedules allow it. I will throw in some other road races, short tri's and maybe a century ride along the way. WEIGHTLOSS: I lost thirty pounds from late 2011 to early 2012. I'm hoping to have another thirty or so less to drag around Florida come November. |

Veteran 256 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed I ran 8.5 miles on Sunday and got through it in good shape. I know 8.5 miles is nothing, really. But after a couple of months of "down time" I didn't know what to expect. Then on New Year's Day I ran 6 miles with the last 4 miles at Tinman Tempo pace. I didn't plan on this, it just worked out that way. A faster runner never caught up to me. Pretty happy about that, since I wasn't really trying to keep him behind me. Now to dust off the Bike tomorrow and see how that goes. (Assuming I can get up after tonight's Gators Game. Go Gators!) Bill |
