Wow Nancy - not having a great week! Hope your "face" feels better soon and you get your bike back faster than anticipated. Maybe go over to ST and bug the Felt guy over there BTW what is chemotherapy cream? Although I guess I can imagine! YIKES!

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!!

So while we're talking about nerves....does anyone get emotional at the start or end of an event? I do. And my husband experienced this for the first time at the starting line of the VT marathon last weekend. It's more like the anticipation and excitement gets to me and all of a sudden I'm all choked up - which is recoverable if it's a bike race or running race but this is what gets me in the water. If you can't breathe, you can't swim. THIS is what I need to overcome or at least be able to hold it off until I get out of the water and can coast on the bike for a few miles.

Took the day off yesterday to deface the pavement and mark it for the bikeMS ride on Sunday. It's not as much fun as it sounds But it's done - and the weather was PHENOMENAL!!!

TGIF!

About to pack up and head down to Rock Hall.  It's a special USAT qualifier so the top 3rd in each AG qualify for AG nationals.  I'm figuring sub-2:30 will get me there, which is going to take one hell of a race from me.  Weather is looking good; wetsuit legal (was getting a little worried there for a bit...), around 70 degrees through the race.

Good luck to everyone else racing...let's bring home some hardware!!!  :-)

I have not had that problem before.  Can you do some visualization work regarding the start of the race leading up to the event?  and then visualize how you will handle it if you get emotional?  key phrase?  10 deep breathes? I do something like this before every race either to combat my "freaking out" in OW or just to prepare myself for the pain to come!

Good luck racing peeps!

Well I definitely have to figure out something! LOL Maybe I'll buy a book on breathing techniques - in, out.....

Yeah I don't think it's an OW freak out thing for me. I grew up swimming in a pond. I don't particularly like it but I'm not afraid of it either. The OCEAN on the other hand freaks the heck outta me!!

Choked up as in tearful or can't get a breath? Exactly what are the physical and mental feelings that you have before a race?

I used to have a lot of problems with breathing during the mass start of OWS. It took a long time to figure out what the problem was as I'm not afraid of water, snakes, grass, people hitting me etc.,  At the start of a race when the gun went off my HR would sky rocket and I couldn't get it down then my breathing would be off. Which would start a panic type cycle in the water. To combat this problem I try to swim before the race or do some sort of warm up to get my heart rate up . Then it isn't such a shock to my system once the race starts.

I still have some unresolved breathing/asthma issues during races that need to be addressed. At Boulder 70.3 during the swim it felt like I couldn't breathe. The altitude and my asthma made it almost impossible to swim. I was hanging onto kayaks and came close to DNFing. Last weekend at the race it also felt like I couldn't breathe during the run portion. Which is something that I've got to get taken care of ASAP.

Got a good swim interval workout for me in tonight.   50's and 100's.   Giving I'm still in SERIOUS rebuilding mode, my 1:01/50 yds 50's and 2:07/100 yds 100's are pretty good numbers for me to put up.  Hoping to increase workout distance a bit in the next week.   Kicking up the run as well, so I'm really pleased with the results of my work this week.

Tomorrow =  Early AM bike ride and then in the afternoon, going to a buddies to set up the cadence meter etc on my bike and will do a short ride after that.   That will allow me to meet ALL of my training goals for May.   Haven't done that for a long time, so I'm pleased.

Got me a solid ride in this morning.   Pace was not super fast, but I did feel really good, and handled the distance (19 miles) well.  I know that's short, but as all of you know still in a big rebuild mode.  Strength is starting to come back.   I'm looking forward to being able to talk more about getting ready for a HIM or Half Mary again, and less about surviving a 5k or sprint tri.

Thanks for all your support team!

Alright, a question for the group, especially the more experianced racers: where/how do you carry flat repair/tools during a race?

I know this is very personal and therefore is different for everyone, but I have been using frame cages and a saddle bag for my training but I wanted to get a little more Aero for my race next weekend. I put a cage between the Aero bars since I only need one bottle for a sprint, and I'll take the cages off the frame, but is the saddle bag good or should I do something else for the tube and CO2 for potential flats?

I'm guessing the results will be similar to a chemical type peel. From what I understand, anything pre cancer-like will crust up/scab over and then eventually peel off, leaving me fresh faced and looking 20 years younger!! LOL

I was told to expect redness, swelling, and peeling skin. What a great public service announcement for next year's students. I'm thinking I may wait until December and stay indoors during my 3 week holiday break.

Nathan...I ride a lot of hours during the summer months in preparation for Augusta 70.3. I have an aerobottle between my bars, one on my seat tube and then I have a behind the saddle holder for 2 bottles. In one of my bottles behind the saddle, I carry all of my repair 'stuff.' I have 2 tubes, 2 tire tools, allen wrenches, zip ties, the nozzle for my CO2 cartridges, some cardboard, and a wetnap (for wiping off the grease after tire changes). My behind the saddle cage also holds 2 CO2 cartridges. I carry water and/or fuel in my other 3 bottles (between the aero bars, on the seat tube and one behind the saddle) as most of our training rides are unsupported or don't have gas stations where we can stop.

For me, I'll give up the aero to make sure I have what I need in case of a flat. A friend of mine raced Raleigh last year, and wanting to be as aero as possible, didn't carry a spare tube. He got a flat 12 miles from transition. A good samaritan racer gave him his spare after about a 30 minute wait.

I use the same setup for races longer than Olympic.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I'm fine at the start of races but I get all choked up at the end. It only happens the first time I complete a new distance. HM, HIM, full marathon, I'll probably be a blubbering mess if I every do a full IM.

Solid race for me this morning with a 3 minute improvement over last year. Strongest field I have ever seen at this race. Ended up 13th overall and 2nd in AG. Lots of fast 50-54 guys there as we placed 4 in the top 15.  No splits posted yet. Hot and humid but a fun morning.

Hope everyone racing is thrashing it out there!

I did my first event last year. It was a Half Marathon for me, and a full Marathon for my son. I was a blubbering idiot. For me, it was because my son had challenged me to do the HM so I would have something to train for to help me lose some weight. I had two desires. First. Finish. Second. Be at the finish line before my son, I did both.

I did both almost 30 pounds lighter than when my son said, "Dad. You need to do something about your weight. Let's train for a Marathon together." Another reason for the emotions was that I had tried for a long time to lose the weight and nothing worked. Having a reason to train is what I needed.

It'll be the same way at the Chicago Triathlon. Again, I'm doing it because my son challenged me. I've lost another 20 pounds, and by the time we run it, I'll have lost a total of about 60 or more. All because my son had the guts to say, "Dad, you're getting fat...." Yep. I'm gonna cry, I know it.

2:38:01 yesterday, splits of 31:00, 1:09:00, and 50:07 with about 5 minutes of transition thrown in.  I'll do a full RR soon,  but I'm very happy with my overall results.  Pretty strong field at the upper MOP; tons of racers in the 2:20s.  I missed AGN by about 4 minutes; it would have taken an absolutely flawless race to even sniff that.  Perfect weather and a very well run race, plus we stayed at a B&B 100 yards from transition which was awesome.

I finished MOP in the swim (19/30), T1 (17/30), bike (14/30), T2 (12/30), AND the run (13/30).  At least I'm consistently mediocre!!  :-)

Nice race, Randy!

Nice work Mike and Randy! 40 mile ride for me this a.m.. Turning out to be a beautiful day here after a bit of a chilly start. Low 40's when we were in the pedals at 6 a.m. I've had to shut down the run after having pain in my lower abdomen. My internet self diagnosis is a Sports Hernia. Seems to be very low grade though, it only hurts when I run and usually only in the 1st 10 minutes or so. I'm hoping it's only a strain and a weeks break from running will take care of it. The good news is the bike and swim don't seem to bother me any. Kind of a bummer because I've been noticing some pretty good gains on the run. 1st sprint of the season is next weekend so fingers crossed.

I am very fastidious about keeping my bike as aero as possible.

Tube is stuffed under my seat between the seat rails and held in place with a couple pieces of electrical tape.

CO2 with inflator head already on it (held in position with a bit of electrical tape) is taped to one of the seat rails next to the tube. An alternative is to tape it to one of your aero bar extensions so it is out of the wind.

One tire lever, with a tiny piece of wire for letting air out of a tube with my valve extension on, taped to the top of my stem. You can also use a quick release lever as a tire lever if you need an extra.

I have one water bottle between my aero extensions. I have one water bottle behind my seat. If I'm doing a race long enough to need more than that, there had better be bottle hand ups.

Nice job Mike and Randy. Very strong efforts.

Kevin, I was having some lower abdomen pain this year and went and saw one of my colleagues that I really respect because I thought I might have an inguinal hernia. He diagnosed me with a sports hernia but told me that it was his experience that they often did not get significantly better with repair unless they are really, really bad. Mine seems to be worse some days than others but for the most part it isn't giving me too many issues. Getting old(er) is a bear

I had the opportunity to run a 10K this morning. I didn't think it was going to happen but at the last minute my schedule freed up. I am 'on call' so I had to run with my cell phone in hand. Fortunately no one needed an anesthesiologist while I was running. I went 40:15 which was disappointing until I found out that the overall winner went 38:xx. I guess this course was as difficult as it felt. The last 3/4 of a mile is up about an 8% grade. I tasted bile for that whole segment so I guess I was near my limit.

ETA. 9th overall out of 640 runners. Only puts me at third in my AG. Tough crowd.

Nice job Randy, Mike and Jason! Way to represent.

For me...got in a 7 mile run wearing a huge floppy brimmed hat to keep the sun off my still healing face. Fortunately, there was a nice breeze because I didn't get to run until 11:30 (dogs needed a much deserved walk first today).

Note to self: RUN EARLIER. It's HOT at 11:30 a.m. in South Carolina.

May try to hit the pool tomorrow. Doc said I could swim in chlorine if I put some of that liquid bandage on my face first. The good news is that with no bike and no swimming, I've had some really nice cross training over the past week. It's made me realize that I really do need to incorporate those other things to help keep my muscles more balanced. I've consistently done 3 sessions of core work for the past 2+ weeks, and feel as though that's starting to make some improvements in other aspects of my training. During today's run, while I felt fatigued at mile 7, my form still felt pretty solid. Probably not a coincidence.

Wow, you really do get faster and faster, Randy! Awesome job!

Sounds like you had a great race yourself, Mike.

Nathan, sorry about the possible hernia. Sounds uncomfortable! Great job on the 10k.

Had fun at an 5k obstacle run on Saturday and survived my 2nd 2.5 mile swim. My arms are so sore right now.

Happy new week of training!

Congratulations to Mike, Randy and Jason. Lots of fast results this weekend.

I placed 3 in my AG at a sprint triathlon. I was 4 min off 1st place in my AG on the swim. I've got to get the swim times down to a reasonable time.  Had to stop during the bike because the helmet sticker blew off and was stuck to my front tire, I was afraid it was going to get stuck in the brakes and cause an accident. Still ended up with 2nd fastest bike in my AG. Run was a real struggle as I couldn't breathe and get my HR down. I've come to the conclusion that something is medically wrong here. I'm going to go to the doctor as soon as possible. Ended up with 3rd in AG on run but it was a real struggle. I came close to going to medical after the race.

And I had the FASTEST Transition times in my AG   T1- 1:20 and T2- :48
