I think post-pregnancy pounds are harder to get rid of than anyone tells you. In theory it seems you'll be able to get exercise and fresh air and eat right....but then reality hits and there's others who seem to need every moment of your time! Keep working at it and it WILL go away.

On a similar note, I am super frustrated tonight since I have to skip the spinning class in lieu of being mommy! Is that bad? My son has been gone since Saturday and is due back any minute. For me to leave now for the gym wouldn't be a good thing! This week's workouts are all messed up and I feel it in my emotions. Darn it!!!!! Love the kids though, and can't wait to see him. Hubby has a procedure tomorrow to make sure we don't have any more kids, though. Hopefully I can sneak a run in before we leave for the doc in the morning. He'll be off work thru the New Year, so after tomorrow I have no more excuses for missing workouts and will be diligent!!!!

(I stuck a photo from the 12k on Sunday in my album today. I am a dork. Repeat after me!)

I saw the pictures, my what big eyes you have. LOL

Hi Everyone,

I found a couple of video clips that I thought were quite good. Hope you enjoy!

Alexander Popov swimming technique - this video includes some really nice commentary about the stroke and the technique.

As of 2007, Popov still holds the world record for the long course men's 50 m freestyle with 21.64 s

Swim Smooth Visualization (Bill Kirby)

Bill Kirby was an Australian freestyle and butterfly swimmer of the 1990s and 2000s, who won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team.

Beth! You should have shown me this before I screwed up my knee. I'm excited about these videos and the little bit I have learned and I can't put it into practice.

Just kidding! Seriously thanks for the link to You Tube. I never thought of looking there for videos to learn with. I really liked the touch and spin method as far as the flips go, especially since my pool is shallow. Bummer I have to wait till my knee gets better. It's like having the coolest electronic toy around but no batteries. Ok I'll stop whinning.

LOL

You can whine (a little).

Glad you like the video - I thought they were quite good.  Hope the knee is feeling better soon!

ShawnC13 - 2007-12-19 7:22 PM Swimming tonight last lesson going to try and slow my stroke down and focus on a nice clean stroke and try and relax. It is so much easier when I am relaxed. Will post details later.

Excellent!

We will be anxious to hear how it goes

It is not bad at all to feel that way.  It's a perfectly human reaction and completely understandable.

Hope you can get a run in tomorrow

I'm starting to feel better, so I'm hoping to get a swim in.

I'm going to stick to my plan of no biking or running until Jan 1 (ok maybe Jan 2) - my foot feels at about 85 - 90% and I want it to be all the way better b4 I push it

I think I'm actually getting a little tired of the color purple in my logs - LOL

ps

great pics!

The swim was ok wasn't feeling well but thought I did good. Put it in my logs did a total of about 300 m with drills and lengths with taking breaks so I can deal with that and work from there. Hopefully soon I will be saying I am swimming 300m straight through.

I am a dork. Oh wait, you mean you're a dork? No way! I love the Santa hat!!! (I have a thing for holiday hats ) ...

And life--like family--is what allows us to tri ... and though we're grumpier (and me, even more whackadoodle) when we can't work out, say it was our last day on earth, we would never regret seeing our loved ones again, but who cares about the Spinning class?! (I work for Spinning, so I really can say that. ) Looks like you made a beautiful decision!

Great job on doing the lesson even if you weren't feeling well ... and I'm sure your form is coming together beautifully! You will get to 300 sooner than you think, I'm sure!

Whee! I had a great swim tonight, Manatees! I swam 100y in 2:17 -- that is *huge* for me. I guess all the intervals and drills and Beth's most excellent advice is paying off.

Now let's just hope I can hang on to these improvements. I'm always nervous about flukes. *g*

Fluke, nothing! You've worked really hard and what an incredible split! Yes, you'll hang on to the improvements and even improve on the improvements. As with all life processes, you'll have off times, but always on the whole, you'll continue getting better and faster.

Great work!!!

Must be something in the water (ha, ha), 'cause I had a really good swim last night as well. I managed to swim 50 yards 4 different times without having to roll over and backstroke.

Must be something in the hearts of great triathletes. Super swim! (Oh, and don't anyone try and tell me they're not a triathlete yet ... it's like, if you play the piano, you play the piano ... if you swim, bike, and run ... you're a triathlete. And yes, having the trainer set up counts! )

That is Awesome!!!

It's not a fluke - it's all that hard work and focus on the right things!  Just keep focusing on those and you will continue to see progress.

Great job on all the swimming!!  I've got a 39-min session planned for tomorrow.  My neck is feeling better now, although I can't get into the massage place until January so I am on the wait list for now.....someone just has to cancel!  I've been having a weird pain in my left quad ever since I squatted down mindlessly a few weeks ago.  It comes and goes, and the only thing that seems to help is running!  Seems odd, but ever since my run today it is fine, when the past two days it has really been acting up.  I think I am just way out of adjusment.

One of my goals before hitting the Oly plan full on (end of January) is to make sure my old body is ready for the work.  This includes taking a hard look at my recently sloppy eating habits (I don't mean spilling food on myself) and at my body's health in general.  I'd love to have everything align and just watch the pounds drop off like they did a year ago before I hit a plateau.  I am going to turn 39 in a few weeks, and have to take into account that my metabolism is shifting down into low gear, ugh!!  Please ask me once in a while if I've seen my chiropractor/massage therapist/naturopath in order to make the above goal happen!!!  I do need a kick in the pants once in a while.  <<And a babysitter, so if anyone is free....let me know.  >>

It's been a wild day here.  My hub had 'the snip' this morning, so that was pretty emotional--same week that we sold the crib.  No more babies here.  Still, it's weird to really truly be done with that chapter.  After baking cookies, we took the kids out with grandma tonight to ride the little train at the outdoor mall (33 degrees out!) and to pizza and lattes (yeah, high calorie day, oops!).   Anyway, the hubby is off until Jan 2, so I am full on in training mode and trying to eat right from here on out, at least pretty well through the holidays....then I will really get that part together.  Phew, this was a long ramble.  Hope you all had a great day!

I know we aren't supposed to put off training but right now I am in a getting ready for it plan. I start school in January for my second 10 week session for my apprenticeship so I will have more time in the morning and will be able to swim then. Right now starting work when I do there is not enough time.

On a side note this question is for Hector. I have read on many threads about shaving legs. Just wondering if you do. I see the benefit on the side of cleanliness when wipeouts happen on the bike. I remember many baseball slides that left me with a mess on my leg and how the hair would only make it worse. Just wondering what you have done.

Funny you should ask that, before joining BT I would have made fun of people who shaved their legs. Since joining, I now shave my legs as needed. First you have to know that my legs were very hairy and I learned that hairy legs and a tight tri wet suit don't work well. Now I wear a shorty when I surf but that type of wet suit is very different. When I came to BT I asked all kinds of question and I was given a bunch of advice, including to shave my legs. As far as were I am concerned it has relieved my hair problem and now I actually like them shaved and so does the wife.

So if your apprehensive about it then don't do it but then again it's just hair and it will grow back. Try it and see for yourself is all i can say. if nothing else your wife might like it. LOL

Sorry to hear that!!! What a stressful thing to do during the holidays--keep doing your workouts, though!!  Keep us posted on your progress when you can.

I am heading to the gym in a while to swim.  I have gained a bunch o' weight this week by eating terribly and not exercising enough.  I have to get this under control NOW!

Did you say you lived in military housing? If so did you check availability at Miramar (that is where your going right?)? Also Tierrasanta Housing is located off of the 15 and the 52 and make for an easy ride to the base as well. They also have a gym and pool that's available to you all the time. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks guys. And yes, Hector, that helps. We'll be house "hunting" all day tomorrow. I work in Sorrento Valley and am a teeny bit familiar with the area. My boss gave me a really good map this morning with "subdivisions" on it and we're going to check them out this weekend. DH is a surfer so we want to be sure to be close enough to the coast to make it easy for him to surf. Are you at Miramar?

I'm at North Island (Coronado) but i live next to the 52 and I can hop on it heading west. it dead ends at La Jolla (10 minutes max) and if you surf then you know where I'm talking about. Good luck on your search.

Hi everyone! Wow, so much going on with everybody ... hey Shaun, you know, sometimes we gotta put off training to live life. You're a very fit fellow who's done a lot of training and your fitness base isn't gonna shrink to nothing just 'cause you take some time off. If anything ... the kids keep you hopping!

We're all crazy busy, so here's a thought for the holidays: something is better than nothing. In other words, don't feel guilty skipping a workout ... take the kids for a walk around the block after dinner. Do half a workout. Split it up. Or just cheerfully realize that life throws ya curve balls, and your body could probably use the break anyway.

Frankly, I don't think anyone in this group has a problem being a slacker--if anything, it's all the opposite! Have a great weekend, and warm and happy holidays to all! I'll be lurking most of the time so check in, comment, chat, whatever if you like.
