Ah!!

So I registered for my leg of "The Canadian Death Race" today... jeeez... here is the leg I got stuck with :

Second leg, 27 km: Flood & Grande Mountain Slugfest Includes about.1 km of pavement. The rest is dirt trail with rocky and swampy sections, and approximately 6 km of hard packed dirt road.. Net elevation gain is 500 feet, but the total elevation change is well over 6000 feet. This leg of the race is characterized by long sustained climbing with about 3 km of very rough terrain and two creek crossings. The trail from the summit of Flood Mountain to the summit of Grande Mountain is the roughest piece of trail in the Death Race. The power line down the front of Grande Mountain leading back into town is the most dangerous part of the entire course. This is due to the steep, rocky drop-offs and unstable footing while running downhill. The Slugfest is the most technical section and is rated the second hardest leg of the Death Race (although many rate this leg as the hardest of all)

Good god what have I got myself into!! haha I feel a bit nuts... but it should be an incredible race!!

Check out the details here for the rest of the insanity :

http://www.canadiandeathrace.com/course_map.html

Tell me this was a good decision?? lol Kidding! I'm pumped!

I would ask you about your weekend but of course what happens in Vegas must stay in Vegas so I won't bother.

It was a very quick weekend out there with a lot of time standing next to a craps table. A very profitable one too might  I add. Cool

Hey gang, sorry I have been MIA lately. Super busy at work and with other crap but hopefully we are all on track for a great season.

So when is everyones first race of the season or next race?

I am hoping to get into a TT race in two weeks.

My training was on track until Sunday night when I got a terrible chest cold, I thought I was in need of a lung and throat transplant. I guess I'll chalk it up to a total body recovery week. I was supposed to do an 18 miler this week, oh well. I think I will start fresh on monday just to be sure my lungs are fully recovered. Anybody have any advice or opinions, I'm five weeks out from my marathon.

I had the same thing happen 5 weeks out from my marathon, and it didn't really affect me that much. I cut back on runs for a week, cut back on training that was not running, and got a lot more sleep than normal. I wound up having a pretty good race.

Of course, my wife thought I was nuts, cause I would get back from work and almost immediatly go to sleep, but hey....

I think that what you'll find is that not getting the full training for a week has minimal impact on your training plan, especially when you're in the middle of an 18 week training plan. Above all - don't panic

The whole chest cold thing must be going around. I have been battling it for a week and a half now.

We got dumped on with snow this past weekend and possiblitlity of a little more is strong. This crap has to end or the suicide rate in Michigan will increase 10 fold.

Hope everyone has a good week and keep training strong!

Thanks, for the response Brian, I felt great this morning on my run. I'll do my 18 miler this week. At this point I feel I could do the mary right now with no problems.

Yes, my first marathon and first race for that matter. My plan at this point is to hang with 4:00 pacer as long as I can. If I can't hang on I will peel off and run a comfortable pace. I'm not sure how it will go running with the crowd, just go with the flow and enjoy the day. I want it to be fun since I have been training hard since Aug.31.

It'll be a lot of fun, and it sounds like you've got a great attitude. I found that actually doing the marathon was a lot easier than some of those 20 mile long runs.

x 2, I would never say a marathon is easy but in comparison to 20 miles unsupported with no one cheering you on it does make the marathon seem easier.

Good luck Tim and go nail it!

Well looks like I'm in for it in the morning, I have that 20 mile long run with rain in the forecast. The good news is I'm heading to Longboat Key Fla. next friday for my spring break training camp (family vacation). All is good!

Thanks for making that list Brian! Woohoo! Go group!! Looks like we have some fun coming up, though for some reason I'm scared of my race coming up. I was SO sure I'd be in way better shape by now, but by being less than consistent I'm not where I want to be, and I'm disappointed.

For my first half mary I trained ok, and did it in 2:21. My 2nd, I didn't train AT ALL (I'd run 27 miles in the preceding 4 months), and I did it in 2:35. My big fear is doing this one slower than the 2nd. I would be so mad!!!!! I would even be mad if I were slower than my first race. I had been hoping for 2:10 but based on how things are going I don't think I can make it, especially because this is a MUCH hillier course than those first 2 (250 ft of elevation change straight up from miles 8-9.5. I guess i'ts good that it's pretty much all downhill from there, though I'm not good with steep downhill running.

Anyway, I guess I should just forget about the times and go for it, and hope for the best. I still better PR though.

Tim - your logs have been ROCK SOLID and you're going to blow away that mary!

Have you thought about shoes with skates built in them? Just imagine the gasps as you zip past the other runners on the downhills

I just looked at your map. I used to work up at Candlewood Lake. That area is as flat as it gets in Connecticut. It's going to be a seriously gorgeous race. I'm jealous.

Thanks guys.  Brian, I actually haven't been to the area where the race is, even though it's only an hour away, so I'll look forward to some beautiful scenery!

I think for the 1 big hill at the end, I will jog very slowly and not push it, and then take it home on the downhill for the rest of the race.  sounds good in theory, i guess.

Everything is only an hour away in Connecticut.... So different than anywhere else I've lived, where a 3 hour road trip is necessary to get anywhere.
