Hey sisters(and bros) this little penguin needs your wonderfull imput:

yesterday's 7 miler run interval training was a deceiving 3 miler insted. I can't stick to the runner's world plan and I am bummed on the verge of panic mode. How can i change the plan so i can manage the distance without injury? Obviously speed or the impact of going too fast is damaging my legs. Can I do biking? and if so,how much? Can I convert the total running time into bike time or do i have to double that if i bike?

HELP!

My daughter is a college runner that had a femur stress fracture last year and she did eliptical and aqua jogging to increase endurance for her return to running...she actually was a stronger runner when she got back then before her injury...this is what she just told me. Eliptical is the number one strategy....keep the incline to your endurance maximum, and maintain the quickest strides you can for 30 mins...she kept hers at 180 and reached max of 200...every 10 min of cross training is equal 1 mile...you can tweak this to your level...but it will prepare your body for the run.
She did either swim, aqua jog, and eliptical at least 1 hours everyday...and should be at an intense level for you and keep heart rate up....this will equal running.
You can look all this up on the internet...google cross training for injured runners...and form you own plan...it can be done Good luck!!!!

Happy Easter!

I don't do easter so today was my brick day. The plan was a 22 mile loop followed by a 3.2 mile run. The wind was strong today so I took out the Allez instead of the tri bike, but I tried out the race wheels on it. My ride started directly into the wind and proved to be too much for me so I turned the ride into an 18 mile out and back; the back was 5-6mph faster! The run felt very hard. I definitely want to get in at least one more brick before my first tri.

I went biking today too.  I had hoped to see the Easter bunny out there, but he didn't show!  In fact, I was almost the only fool to be out there today.  The wind was howling!  But since I'm traveling again tomorrow, I needed to get a long ride in.  Managed to ride 56 miles, just to show myself that I am capable of the HIM distance.  Unfortunately it was very slow, so I'll need to do another confidence-booster on a calmer day.  But as Yvonne said, I need to make friends with the wind because you never know if he (she?) will show up on race day.

Isabelle, I like what everyone is telling you about your running.  I have a friend who over-trained and ended up with a stress fracture over a year ago, and she's still having problems coming back.  But she does a lot of swimming and water jogging to compensate for it, and has high hopes of regaining her speed.  Unfortunately she is my age (over 50), and it's really hard to come back from an injury as we get older.  So listen to your body, don't do anything that hurts, and be sensible!

A friend of mine was training for IM Canada when she suffered an injury. She spent 5-6 weeks leading up to the race pool running (spending several hours in the pool) and she was still able to compete and finish the IM. Listen to your body and do more cross training (ie pool running, elliptical) and we will be cheering for you on race day

Hi all, and Happy Easter !
So I'm still sick, feeling horrible !  have done nothing since breathing really is more important !  I am trying not to go to the doc before I see the ENT doc in a couple weeks, but it's looking like I'll be after that antibiotic. I do not think I can take much more of this, and next week DD has a dance recital I wilL NOT MISS and I don't want to be sick !
I'd feel horrible if she got sick too, she is on the end of a 10 day antibiotic ! good grief
Anyway, thinking of all of you, but just feel ucky so off to get a nice warm shower !

Great workout, Nicole! I haven't checked your log yet but no doubt that even with the wind you were speedy! Love the avatar wheels... looks like the Easter bunny picked them out!

56 miles in a howling wind?! WoW! Sounds like you will be ready just in case the wind should show up. Safe travels tomorrow!

No wonder you didn't see the Easter bunny....he and 2 pals were up in Calgary....Linkin does not chase cats or squirrels but he does love a good bunny chase. No worries though- they always outrun him.

Happy Easter gang!

Hi everyone. I'm back home again and hoping to re-establish my workout rythm.   My knees were bugging me this morning so I decided not to run or bike.   I did get in a nice swim and I think I nailed the right trigger points to relieve my knee pains.   Carrying my grandson around, including up and down some stairs) was likely a factor.

Taking a break from housework and watching CNN. They are talking about severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings in the Southeastern US . Don't recall where everyone lives, but if you live around there...stay safe.

On a brighter note...they are saying it is "Tax Freedom Day" for our friends in the US . I think we have to wait another month or so before we get to celebrate.

Yay Alyssa!!!!!  I am personally not an ipod girl when it comes to running (unless I'm on the treadmill) but I know that you are not the only one who loves the musical interludes.  All I can say, is do what you need to do to get you out the door....but do ensure that it doesn't affect your safety! What kind of music do you listen to when you're out there? Are you singing too?

Does anyone need waterbottles? I just did triage on my cupboard and have for anyone who wants them:
21 oz x2
24 oz x4

Take one or more!

Let me know.

Sorry Yvonne! It's windy here, though, so not perfect. I'll keep good thoughts for melting by weekend!

Did everyone notice the new blog colors? My peach went all yellow! Not all yellow, actually, but peach is just for "Sports" now, I guess? What are we going to call our fully active months now - lemon-peach? banana-peach? tropical fruit punch?

Aagh. I know Julie (IN) will NOT like this!

Have a great day -

Rain last night, rain all day today, rain all day tomorrow. I guess the upside is I don't have to shovel it. The weather is looking good so far for my 5k race on Saturday. My Sunday ride may be wet again.

OK ladies I need your advice...

As some of you know, I have spent most of this year dealing with some family issues. I hope this will all be behind me in the next month or two. I would like to get back into some structured training. Here are my thoughts...

1. Sign up for a 10 K for June.

2. Aim for a Sprint in early August.

3. Continue building from my 10K distance and train for a Half Marathon for mid/late October (using Jeff Galloway's 19 week training plan). Have completed several Half's in the past.

4. Then...continue building up to a Full Marathon (my first) for early March 2010 (using Jeff Galloway's 30 week program/adjusting the weeks a bit).

5. Sprint distance for late April 2010.

6. Olympic for early May 2010.

7. Depending on how things go a HIM for June 2010?

I am a single mom (boys are 14 and 17 at the moment) and work full time so will have to juggle the work/family thing. I have always wanted to complete a Marathon and HIM. Am I being a little too ambitious? The marathon would be a non-timed event (best poker hand wins) so I wouldn't be pressured about completing within a certain time.

Also...my endurance is completely shot. I have gained 15 lbs and in many ways I feel like I am starting from scratch. The Jeff Galloway's program looks interesting (recommends lots of crosstraining which would make it easier to incorporate the swim & bike part of my tri training). Do any of you have experience with Jeff Galloway's way of training (eg. using walk breaks - run 5 minutes & walk 1 minute).

How long were you doing tri's before you attempted a HIM? Should I gain more experience by doing more Sprint and Olympic races before doing a HIM?

Any words of wisdom ?
