LazyMarathoner - 2010-05-05 10:22 AM I desperately need new wheels (training, not racing.. all set with those) for my P2. As DC can attest, the wheels Cervelo puts stock on this bike are a disgrace and after riding on the Zipps and even my marginally better training wheels on my road bike I can't take another mile on that garbage. Any recommendations for a good wheelset in the $400-$500 range? That's about all I'm willing to spend at this point. Thanks for your help!

Wait so going back to the training wheel topic, so the wheels on my P2 are that bad? I don't have a set of nicer wheels yet so I don't really know the difference. What benefits are there in buying a better set of training wheels? I guess I always figured the heavier and less aero your training wheels the faster you will fly when you have a set of racing wheels on.

No.  The wheels on your P2C are fine.  Nothing special, but fine.  Do not waste your money on a nicer set of training wheels unless you have trouble keeping them true.  Then move to a more 'bomb-proof' model.  If the wheels seem uncomfortable, let some air out of the tires.

No problems with comfort using the stock wheels. But coming from an aluminum bike to carbon I feel like I am riding in a Cadillac, I can't imagine the bike being more comfortable with better wheels. Something to look forward too. Laughing

Glad you are enjoying it.  Honestly, my P2C beats me up even more than my all-Alum Soloist.  I'm sure part of it is position-related, but the P2C is a very stiff bike.

You can't be guaranteed a smoother ride with 'better' wheels either.  For example, if you ride with a full disc (as opposed to a disc cover), you will almost surely have a "harsher" ride than on any spoked wheel.  Comfort and speed do not always go together and often times are trade-offs, at least to an extent.

Holy sh1t, JK making an LP thread visit.  Now you know the LP thread is legit!!

As for the Shimano WH R-500's, perhaps we should truly find out of if they are bomb-proof by throwing them off the side of a very steep cliff.

http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/wheels/wheelsets/shimano/PRD_366355_2490crx.aspx#reviews

Many a people on roadbikereview.com use words like "hate" and "awful" to describe these wheels, and I agree.  About a half dozen report frequent broken spokes.  I've had many a flats with these wheels and suspect it's due to the spokes.  I would suggest, when you have the money, invest in a $500.00 wheelset.  A $159.00 wheelset is only going to last so long.

I would gather to guess that most (if not all) the people who gave these a good review have never ridden anything else.  But hey, if  a 1986 Yugo is the only car you've owned, you might think it's a good car.

Those Shimano wheelset is one of the reasons I went with the Felt B12 when buying a Tri bike a couple years back. My B12 came with TTR3’s a Felt wheelset and are just about as aero as Zipps 202, but still not the greatest wheelset.  I raced them for last 2 years and some AG placing so the Felt wheels worked for me.  Just saying I guess.

Dumb question... so is it possible that the stock wheelset I got with my little Cannondale that I've ridden roughly 2,000 miles on may now be the cause of the last 5 flat tires in just 2 months?

Our club had a r/b/r last night and one of the guys even tried changing out the tube for me, but it still went flat about 2 miles in...

is the tire the same tire?  did you find the object that caused the flat or could it still be in the tire?

it could be the smallest thing.....if you dont get it out, its just gonna keep givig you flats.

im not saying this is the cause, just a potential one......

Jenn's correct check the rim tape or replace it.

Run your finger on the inside of the tires for objects piercing through.  Be careful you could cut your finger.  They may not always be visible from the out side.

Then again 2000 miles is a lot on the tires maybe its time to replace them as well.

anybody know how a LT test on the computrainer with blood testing matches up to a LTHR and FTP test on the computrainer for a TT? Should they be pretty close?? Just trying to compare my test from last year which was blood testing versus the one I did yesterday as a 40m TT on the computrainer. It appears that I am less fit this year after taking cycling class in the off season twice a week versus last years once a week. HMMMM, discouraging!

Never said they were bomb proof.  If you have troubles with the spokes, then replace the wheels.  If you don't have trouble, they are otherwise fine.  There is nothing inherently better about $500 wheels than $159 wheels.  The fact that the bike comes with relatively inexpensive wheels means you are not paying for a set of wheels you might not be happy with.  So when you throw them off the cliff there is little loss to you.

And I've only been riding the Soloist for the last month too!  The P2C is really going to beat me up when I pull it out again.

This is the likely answer.

I have Gator skins on them and LBS Guy says I they are still good (3rd season with them).  I/we have run a finger on the inside.  The tears in the tubes always happen near the stem!  One time I pulled the thingy on the bike pump off the stem and the whole damn stem came out.  I figured it wasn't because of cheap tubes, but maybe?  I just bought what LBS Guy told me I needed!

I wold take the tire completely off the rim.  turn it inside out, and really really look for a small object.

even rubbing your fingers can miss it with the tire still on the rim.

Yep!!!

You need to take the tire off the rim.  You could have a bur around the stem hole or need new rim tape.   5 flats in two months is way high; unless you live next to a glass plant.

Take my advice get a second opinion from another LBS, it’s your call.

btw I ride by a glass plant all the time and never had that many flats in 3 years.  But hey that’s just me what do I know.

These are just some of my thoughts.

What gets me is this all started by comparing apples and oranges.

If there were issues noted, broken spokes, constant truing issues etc...I could see the op point to replace.  Then again those issues could be caused by riding style.  Not saying the op is doing so.

Training wheels are just that; for training.  They are meant to take the brunt of the constant rides, bad weather and abuse.  If the get destroyed or in need of over maintenance then replace them with a slightly better set of training wheels.

So what the training wheels are heavy; good when you throw on your race wheels if you have a set you’ll probable ride faster and feel lighter.  So what if the training wheels just ride like crap compared to a 2K set of race wheel.  They should I guess; if not we would all be riding training wheels for races.

Do you ride with enough pressure in your tires or pump them before each ride?  I had a small hole near the stem that caused a flat and they asked me if i'd been riding on way too low psi.  I'm not sure why, but I was asked that which made me think maybe that contributed....b/c i was not in the camp of pumping up my tires before every ride like you're supposed to.

I had 6 flats on my first ride on my new Zipps last year. The ride ultimately ended with me being picked up by the bike shop and it was the rim tape. It's worth checking out if you are getting a lot of flats!
