thanks dino!

suzy and i were talking about a BT peep with the username "tjfry" last week.  i couldn't recall exactly what his tri background was but i knew it was pretty impressive.   below is from his post in the "triathlon claim to fame thread" currently up.   TJ lives down in the Woodlands, just outside of Houston.  He's a pretty cool guy, even helped me out a bit in the rental house search for ironman.  check out the video!  and not posted on there but he led the charge out of the water at cozumel last november although i think that's pretty common for him.

i figured some of you might find it pretty cool.

------------------------------------------------

I was the 1988 Ironkids Overall National Champion

USA Triathlon had to change their age rule for the first world championships in Avignon, Fr when at 15 I beat all the 17-19 years olds in one of the junior national team world qualifiers

I led the Ironman World Championships in Kona as a pro.

I got to see parts of the world for free thanks to tri.

I had some great moments and races, of which only a very few were ever caught on video...like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ3bWEwghDI

I've qualified for Kona 5 times, raced it twice.

I got to train with the likes of Nick Radkewich, Becky Lavelle, Laura Bennett, Hunter Kemper, The Debooms, etc., roomed with Cameron Brown and partied with Macca, and learned volumes in the process.

I used to race Lance on a regular basis as a kid.

I owned the swim course record for 70.3 Buffalo Springs and the Wildflower Triathlon (HIM) for a number of years.

I'm all washed up now, but can still break 50 min in an Ironman swim.

How much can weight loss impact how comfortable a saddle is on a bike?  My saddle has been giving me the worst saddle sores lately!  When I ride, it feels really uncomfortable.  It fit me when I bought it back in April, but I've lost like 25+ pounds since then.  Does that make a difference?

We put Ryan's old tri saddle on my bike for tomorrow to see how that fits.  I hope it's good so I don't have to figure out something else!

I don't know, but if your body composition has changed (and I can't imagine that it didn't!), then I would think you might need to fit yourself to a new saddle.

Also, I'd guess you are wearing different shorts? That can make a difference for me -- some styles I have chafe me pretty badly (some only chafe on one of my bikes and not the other).

Finding a new saddle is a royal PITA, so to speak, so good luck!!!

I'm going through the same thing. I lost about 25 pounds too, and I feel like my saddle is not as supportive as it used to be. I'm on the search for a new saddle.  I have a feeling that my sitbones are just wider (not that it became wider, but I had a lot of "fat" that I couldn't feel the sitbones to begin with) than the seat.

Have you tried going to the bike shop and using the sitbones measurer?  A new bike shorts may help too - and I guess it depends on where the sores are located. I have no idea exactly how to help saddle sores, but I do know that since I lost the weight, my saddle doesn't feel as comfortable as it used to be.

Did you get your seat raised since you were last fit in April? I found that since I raised my seat about 1 1/2" higher, I'm not "upright" anymore, so it's more uncomfortable. Maybe that's the reason?   I have never ever gotten saddle sores or anything of the sort. I don't even use lube. Never needed it.

haha.  thanks!  glad you liked it.   yes, on purpose.  stems from something steve talked about a few mg's back.   when getting in the water everyone looks alike to the people on shore,  hard (impossible sometimes) for family to pick you out.  so, raising your hand one last time flashing that sign is a cool way of letting them know where you are and that you're thinking of em'.   sometimes jarrett just uses one finger though.... ;-

definitely.  probably stating the obvious here but especially in the your inner thighs,  i had to switch it up a few months back because of exactly this.  narrower is better for me.

you mentioned tri saddles.  don't get caught up in the marketing here.  plenty of "road" saddles winning races from local sprints to ironman.  if a saddle works then use it.  don't discount one because it doesn't have a long nose or it doesn't say "tri" in the name somewhere.

one thing i just can't figure out is why every lbs i walk into has a 10 day policy or they have a special program where you can rent a saddle for $25 a week (but you get that discounted off the purchase price...whatever)

here are some options to get around the above
  • you've probably heard of cobb cycling. lots of good saddles.  i'm on the shc 170.  john and ginger cobb run an awesome shop and have the best customer service.
  • competitive cyclist has a 60 day return policy

hope this helps.  AWESOME job with the weight loss.  keep it up!!!

Hey gang. How's it hanging. Haven't been around much as I have been focused on my new business. Coming along but of course not where I want it. When people ask me how it's going I tell them. "Great and it will get better soon" .

Training has been very sporadic due to the old body falling apart. My back was sore for a while and while I am slowly working through that I have had a knee problem. Last weekend I was putting up some curtain and suddenly got a shooting pain through my knee. It feels like someone has shoved a "large" needle into my knee just at the inside of the patella. It's OK when I keep the leg straight but I am virtually unable to bend it. Hurts like h@!! when I bend it. Strangely enough it doesn't hurt when I walk. I am wondering if I may have started an injury when we were doing running drills last week and on the weekend bent it the wrong way to finish the job.

This is "starting" to get frustrating. I think I am just going to stop getting older

Hey John awesome work on the ride and race.

I got the results of my swim video last week and it sure isn't pretty watching yourself in the pool. Can you say Beached Beluga. I need to get out in the sun. It seems I am entering the water to soon with my arm. I was taught to drop my hand into the water just above my head and then reach forward. This time I was working with a true swim coach and she wants me to reach much farther ahead before I re-enter the water with my arm. The rest of my form was OK even though I was swimming with a sore back. As she said most of us in triathlons are not true swimmers but survival swimmers.

Now for the weird part. I had a dream last night and in it I was swimming. I was actually consciously trying to correct my stroke and reach forward in the dream. This stuff really gets inside your head. If I could only get the fitness I need by sleeping and dreaming about it.. That would be great but then again I would probably have to do my races while sleeping then.

Awesome, thanks for the help!

The only reason I mentioned tri saddle is because we each switched out the saddles that originally came with our bikes and just never got rid of them.  I put on my old saddle and sat on it for just a few seconds and remembered exactly why I switched a year ago!  The only other saddle we had sitting around was Ryan's original saddle that came on his tri bike.  I hope it works for my ride today just because I don't want to deal with having to buy another saddle!  Giant pain...

Thanks for the encouragement, too.  I'm at a bit of a plateau in weight loss right now since I've been increasing my training, which means I'm HUNGRIER!  Nothing like a grumbling tummy in class!

Should you decide you want a Cobb V Flow talk to me before you buy it.  I have a brand new in the box saddle that I never used and I guarantee the deal will be better than what you can buy.

My month is over here & I can't believe we're moving into March already.  Where does the time go??  Albeit being sick earlier this month, I put in some good volume on the bike, but lacked a bit in the swimming dept.  I hope to bring that up a bit next month.  I did close out the month with 18 holes of extremely competive golf..

February's totals:
Bike:19h 22m 42s  - 613.65 KM
Run:11h 52m 56s  - 126.25 KM
Swim:6h 39m 43s  - 15600 M
Strength:2h 00m
Golf:4h 30m

I can sympathize w/ the weight plateau.  I've found that if you get stuck on a plateau b/c your body has adjusted to the new calorie intake but you still need those calories for training then try something different.

Some possibilities:
- Shift the macro nutrients around for a few weeks.  Maybe increase 5-10% percent b/t protein and healthy fats while reducing carbs by that amount.
- Cut out bread carbs and focus on whole grains and veggies for carbs
- do some low intensity workouts in the AM before eating breakfast
- change up your workouts, add some higher intensity speed work to the bike or run
- reduce your meat consumption and focus on other sources of protein

Try to change your diet w/o changing the amount of food you eat.  It helps me to keep my body guessing that way it doesn't get too comfy processing calories.  I hope that makes sense.

Eh.  It's a PR by less than a minute and the old PR was on a much more difficult course so it doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment. But considering the holes in my training this winter I'm content.

Thanks all for the kudos!

Anyone here a Biggest Loser fan?  I literally bumped into Mark Kruger yesterday at packet pick up. He ran the marathon in 3:25 and won his division.  I wasn't a huge fan of his when he was on the show but I give him a lot of credit for changing his life.  The man looked good!
