NoSit - 2009-04-14 4:40 PM Did everyone notice the new blog colors? My peach went all yellow! Not all yellow, actually, but peach is just for "Sports" now, I guess? What are we going to call our fully active months now - lemon-peach? banana-peach? tropical fruit punch? Aagh. I know Julie (IN) will NOT like this! Have a great day - Trish

Friday the 10th was a sport-only day for me and I'm still seeing it as dark pink...IDK

I think it was my monitor! I'm getting peach & pink again! Maybe it's my aging eyes!

OK ladies I need your advice...

As some of you know, I have spent most of this year dealing with some family issues. I hope this will all be behind me in the next month or two. I would like to get back into some structured training. Here are my thoughts...

1. Sign up for a 10 K for June.

2. Aim for a Sprint in early August.

3. Continue building from my 10K distance and train for a Half Marathon for mid/late October (using Jeff Galloway's 19 week training plan). Have completed several Half's in the past.

4. Then...continue building up to a Full Marathon (my first) for early March 2010 (using Jeff Galloway's 30 week program/adjusting the weeks a bit).

5. Sprint distance for late April 2010.

6. Olympic for early May 2010.

7. Depending on how things go a HIM for June 2010?

I am a single mom (boys are 14 and 17 at the moment) and work full time so will have to juggle the work/family thing. I have always wanted to complete a Marathon and HIM. Am I being a little too ambitious? The marathon would be a non-timed event (best poker hand wins) so I wouldn't be pressured about completing within a certain time.

Also...my endurance is completely shot. I have gained 15 lbs and in many ways I feel like I am starting from scratch. The Jeff Galloway's program looks interesting (recommends lots of crosstraining which would make it easier to incorporate the swim & bike part of my tri training). Do any of you have experience with Jeff Galloway's way of training (eg. using walk breaks - run 5 minutes & walk 1 minute).

How long were you doing tri's before you attempted a HIM? Should I gain more experience by doing more Sprint and Olympic races before doing a HIM?

Any words of wisdom ?

Karen,

I bet you haven't lost as much fitness as you think you have. I had to take pretty much most of last year off because of wildfires (I have lung issues and just didn't want to take the chance on permanent damage with all the smoke in the air from May-July) and a broken rib (in September). When I started training again in October, I thought I'd be back to square 1, and I'll be honest, it hurt a lot. But, my fitness came back much more quickly than it took to get in the first place!

That said, I think your plan is fine, except for the marathon-followed-by-HIM part. I think you'll have to end up choosing which of those you want to focus on and let the other race go, like someone else (I'm blanking on who) already said. I'm betting a marathon takes a lot of recovery - more than just 2x a half marathon, no matter how easy you run.

Another thing to consider for a June HIM is how early in the season will you be able to get out on the roads on your bike? June might be pushing the bike fitness after winter trainer rides (unless you're not at all like me who tends to skip more trainer rides than I finish). Although 56 miles isn't too far to go with very little road time, getting off and running a half marathon afterward might be asking too much! I've entered a HIM in July this year and I feel a little panicky because I'm worried about my road time for that - and I live in sunny California! not snowy B.C.!

I like the Galloway method - it gives my legs something to do besides running and I tend to just keep accelerating if I don't pay attention, so it slows me down and keeps me going!

Just some (more) things to think about ...

Trish

Hi everyone...

Thanks for all of the advice.  You guys are right about the marathon and HIM.  I think I will have to choose one or the other and if I still want to do a HIM, maybe look at one much later in the season or the following year.  You're right Amy...I have to be careful not to overdue.  I have also made that mistake and ended up regretting it.

Susie...you hang in there.  I have been dealing with the divorce thing too and I know this can be a very stressful and scary time, but you will get through this.  I am here if you ever need to talk. ((hugs)).

Julie...I hope you and your daughter are feeling better and the doctors can get to the bottom of this.

Julee ...My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family...

Cheri...good job getting that training in.  I doesn't sound like you had a lot of equipment to work with.  Safe travels home

Helen...you're doing really well.  You're going to be soooo ready for Steelhead!

Yvonne...I hope you have great weather this weekend and you and the hubby get a chance to get out on the bike.  Do you find the ART helps?

Ok...I know I have missed a lot of you, but my memory is not what it used to be (lol).  Will have to go back and read the posts/logs again .   Good luck to all of those that are racing this weekend.  Hurry back and tell us all about it .

Good morning!

I had beautiful weather yesterday for my bike commute to work. This weather is supposed to hold through to Sunday afternoon/evening and they are predicting perfect weather for my 5k tomorrow.

I swam this morning but kept it a bit easier to that I don't tire out my legs for tomorrow. I tried using a pull buoy for 2 300m sets; I am so much faster when my legs aren't dragging (>20 seconds for 300m)!

I asked a day or two ago if anyone needs water bottles. I was cleaning out the cupboard and have a couple 21oz and several 24oz. Let me know if you want one/all ;)

I'll take some if any are left ... I only have 3 water bottles. (But maybe I can pick up some others at race expos this year.)

Doing some research, and by ordering online I can get the monthly plan for an iPhone down to $62 (before taxes). So, that's only a little bit above a regular cell phone voice plan. So I was thinking of ordering next week.

And then my brother threw a new one at me: The next model iPhone is coming out at the end of June. But going another 2 months without any phone at all would be a bit tough. I have to ask myself whether ability to copy and paste is worth 2 months of being incommunicado, and those Internet discounts might not apply. Hmm ...

Things to consider: I'm not sure that a release date has been announced/confirmed (I haven't read that anywhere); cut-and-paste is likely to be a firmware update available to the older phones (I'm on a first gen iPhone so I'm hoping this is true!)

June 29 is, reportedly, on an ATT commercial. But I personally haven't watched it.

I also just found another discount on the phone. So I think I probably will go ahead and get next week.

Glad someone has good weather.  We've already had over 2.5" of rain since 4pm and are under a tornado watch until 10pm.  My son has baseball tournament this weekend and his first game, scheduled for tonight, has been canceled.  It's supposed to rain all day again tomorrow as well.  Good luck at your run tomorrow!

Looks like you've got some great plans for the weekend!  You mentioned doing the MS ride in your area.  The MS 150 ride between Houston and Austin was scheduled for this weekend.  Riders leave Houston on Saturday and spend the night in LaGrange, then ride into Austin on Sunday.  They have canceled the ride for tomorrow because of our horrible weather.  I guess the rides will drive to LaGrange on Saturday night and leave for Austin the following morning.  Have a great time this weekend!!

(And I still can't leave you any inspires on your log either!)

Karen, I walk/run all of my "runs" and it's worked out well for me coming from absolutely no running base a year ago. Besides Jeff Galloway, you might check out The Runners Handbook by Bob Glover.  The book has got a lot of really good information and some great walk/run plans for all distances. In training for my halfs, I used a plan from Smart Coach at Runners World. Looks like you have some great goals for the next 18 months!

I have the most rediculous sunburn on my back.  I used that spray sunscreen adn it kinda "speckled" the burn on my back ! DOH Also had dinner with my folks. now it's bathtime for the kiddo and bed.......THANK GOD FOR BED !
Tomorrow is L's first soccer game, wish us luck since the last two practices she cried. Less yesterday, but still she did it.
I am going to have to bring some chips and sugar stuff to get her through .  WE have an apt. to talk to her pediatrician about her blood sugar dropping..........
and then she cries nonstop until fed. Mostly until she is given sugar......... hence the dr. apt.

When my daughter was 4 or 5 we started her in soccer. She cried through the first two practices and wouldn't participate at all. I refused to bring her back. She tried softball a few years ago and she was more interested in the social aspects than in the sports aspects. She and team sports just didn't work out. Now she dances and does figure skating and want to do poms when she gets to high school. I hope it works out for your daughter and she has fun.

I hear that ! We tried playtime/tumblig when she was 2 almost 3 and that did not work out .  We've had a few other "false starts" as well.   She will finish her dance next week wtih her recital (complete with hair done etc). PHEW
Soccer she loves, just does not like that someone else may get the ball or bump her. LOL
Anyway, if she does not do better today we are done too (and still do not have the shirt).
We promised her we'd take her to her favorite pizza play joint if she does not cry today at her dance.
I will not put her in anything over the summer, a break for her and me.  The idea of soccer was she could play with her friends, then turns out they are up to around 6 years old and many are much bigger than her, plus her playgroup was put on totally seperate teams so there are no "friends" on her team.
We'll know for sure in a bit, her game is at 10:00 .......... lol

Happy Saturday everyone!  I made it home from St. Louis last night, despite a fire evacuation in the control tower in Charlotte and "routine" (?) maintenance on our connecting flight to Ft Walton.  I'm so glad I decided to forego the sprint tri today -- instead I slept until 8:00 (unheard of for me!) and now I'm going to a nice bike ride.  That weather that Lisa was writing about is heading our way, and tomorrow is supposed to be awful, so I'm so glad it's pretty today.

Nicole, I hope you enjoy(ed) your 5K today.  I'm a little late with the good luck, so I hope it went well for you!  Can't wait to read about it.  5K is a difficult distance for me; I like the longer runs because I can establish a more comfortable pace.  For the 5K I have to push faster than I really want to.  I guess that's just the laziness coming out in me!  Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it.

I'll check back in later -- have a great day!

I had a great race; surpassed my pre-race expectations and put up a new PB! Based on last year's results I thought I had a solid chance at placing in my age group but I still missed out   I haven't seen the official results yet so I don't yet know how far back I was.

It's another complete washout today. I don't know how many inches of rain we've had so far, but we are under a flash flood watch until late this evening. Easter weekend, I had seven monarch caterpillars munching my butterfly weed. My son and all the neighborhood kids were really excited. We've been able to find two chrysalis from the batch. One was thoughful enough to make its chrysalis right above our front door (so at least its protected from the rain) but the other is completely exposed in my rosemary. I'm hoping they survive the wind and rain, as they should be "hatching" in a few more days and the kids have really enjoyed watching them.

Julie, hope your daughter has a great soccer game; Nicole congrats on your PB and hope you had fun; Cheri, enjoy today because you are in for some bad weather if its anything like ours!  Hope everyone has a great time with all their weekend activities!!
