MDHillSlug - 2009-04-19 1:06 AM Good morning!

I had a great race; surpassed my pre-race expectations and put up a new PB! Based on last year's results I thought I had a solid chance at placing in my age group but I still missed out   I haven't seen the official results yet so I don't yet know how far back I was.

Congratulations Nicole!!  Fantastic job!!

I did a 36 & change mile bike ride today -- this is one of my longest rides ever. Although it's about 7 miles more than I should have riden. My legs weren't so tired, but my butt, shoulders and hands were hurting. But I'm a pretty happy camper today.

Thinking about doing a charity MS ride. If I could do 36 today, then I supposed I should go for it.

Watched it a couple days back.  It is a must-see.  She has a fantastic voice and the video is both funny and touching.  I put a box of tissues in front of my wife before I hit the play button.

Looks like I've got my knees back under control.  I had a few major knots in my quads that I had to release.

The weather yesterday and today was gorgeous - sunny and 65.   I got in a nice bike ride yesterday and was out for a run late this morning.   Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

I went for a run this morning with my Garmin, got home and turned it off. When I went to upload the information, it's saying there isn't a connection either to the Garmin site or BT AND I can't get it to turn on. Anyone have any ideas?  Guess I'll give it about 30 minutes and see what happens.

Morning...

I am having problems uploading my workouts as well (I don't get the same error message).  Have reported the problem...will let you know what they say.  How was your run?

OH my! I wish my husband would have given me a box of tissues prior...we just watched it and I am beside myself. It pains me that this lady was judged so harshly due to her appearance- but I am thrilled that she had the opportunity to shine. Hopefully everyone watching walked away with a strong reminder about judging people based purely on appearances. wow.....going to wash my face and blow my nose now....

Lisa...when you walk run, do you do 5 & 1's or 10 & 1's?  Also...how much "speed work" are you doing?  The walk/run plan is appealing...I am not very fast, but I don't want to become even slower.  Will check out that book from Bob Glover next time I am at the bookstore.

lufferly - 2009-04-17 6:08 PM
The Jeff Galloway's program looks interesting (recommends lots of crosstraining which would make it easier to incorporate the swim & bike part of my tri training). Do any of you have experience with Jeff Galloway's way of training (eg. using walk breaks - run 5 minutes & walk 1 minute). How long were you doing tri's before you attempted a HIM? Should I gain more experience by doing more Sprint and Olympic races before doing a HIM? Any words of wisdom ?

Karen, I walk/run all of my "runs" and it's worked out well for me coming from absolutely no running base a year ago. Besides Jeff Galloway, you might check out The Runners Handbook by Bob Glover.  The book has got a lot of really good information and some great walk/run plans for all distances. In training for my halfs, I used a plan from Smart Coach at Runners World. Looks like you have some great goals for the next 18 months!

I was totally flabergasted. That is a must see performance. I would put in in the same inspiring range as the team Hoyt achievement. What an humbling and touching moment! Too bad some people on facebook made some hainous sites on it. One woman is so bad on her coments that i had to report her. So sad to see that there are people that are so small inside and solely based on apearences. Hope to see more "Susan Boyle"  in the tri world and in all fields of competition! YES WE CAN!!!

Karen, I normally warm up with a 5 minute walk, then run 3/walk 2 on my easier runs, but if its a longer run after 3 miles, I feel better running a little longer and walking a little shorter.  (I have run a continuous 25 minutes but I wasn't any faster, and it was much harder on me.) I did my 2 halfs running 3/walking 2 since that's how I trained starting with no running experience at all.  Smart Coach has some speed training, but I've heard its better to work on your endurance the first year, and then add the speed work. Glover's book has two 10 week programs. One starts out running 1/walking 2 and increasing the running time each week, keeping the walking at 2, then slowly decreasing it. There is also a pyramid plan, that you increase your running time alternating with the walking throughout the run (ie; week 5 you are running 2-5-8-3 with a 1 minute walk between). If you'd like, I can scan (OK, my DH can scan since I don't know how) the two pages with those programs and e-mail it to you. Just send me a PM with your e-mail address. I may go back and work off the pyramid plan but when I started, I couldn't keep up with it and came up with the 3/2 combination from another book.

I really hope that my Garmin hasn't DIED!! When I plug it in, it's not showing that it's even charging and I can't get it to turn on.  UGHH!!

Isn't that Susan Boyle clip wonderful? I think that's one of the best renditions of I Dreamed a Dream that I've ever heard.  Do a search for her name and "Cry Me A River" and you should be able to find a clip from a charity CD she recorded 10 years ago.

Well said.  Wasn't there a lesson to be learned with that one...society is so quick to judge.  Loved looking at the expression on their faces once she started singing...

Hi everyone!  Hope you are having a good weekend.  I'm starting to feel a little more human again.  I got a decent bike ride in yesterday and a long-ish run this morning, so I accomplished my goals for the weekend.  And I'm spending the afternoon being lazy, catching up on Tivo and puttering.  I'm so glad I don't have to get on an airplane tomorrow!

How is everyone's training coming along?

Which Garmin do you have? I have a FR305 and from time to time I have to do a reset on it (enter + lap I think). It always makes me nervous but it ends up OK.

Yesterday I failed to get any HR data during my run but today it was OK. I'm wondering if it was having an issue with the other Garmins in the area when I turned it on.

Hi Nicole...I have had the Garmin 201, 205 and now the 405.  The 405 is the only one of the Garmin's that I have had the HR capability (used a Polar in the past).  Out of the three I would say I like the 405 the best (the 205 & 201 I was always having trouble locking onto the satellites).  The only downside maybe for the 405 is that it doesn't have the multisport function that the 205 had.  With the 405 I have to stop the workout and then manually change over to the bike or run function.  I was a little hesitant about the HR feature.  I know the earlier versions of the 305 had some problems, but the 405 has been great.  Thinking maybe in 6 months or so, purchasing the 310 xt (waterproof version of the 205/305), but would like to wait to see about the reviews and if it is worth the extra $$$.

I had a good ride this morning on the tri bike; not too hot and not too windy.

I've decided that I will use my other bike for my first tri in three weeks. I'm not completely sure I can handle the hills on this bike and I'm definitely not yet comfortable with the gearing and the shifting.
