Master 1790 | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) I went riding again today - it was just so nice outside. Also did a short run. My arms got *really* sunburned from Saturday. Ouchie ouchie ouchie. Stupid me for not wearing sunscreen. But I bought some today - and aloe vera. |

Hey, for those that get sunburns, poor things, there is an awesome product (walmart carries it) called Ocean Potion. Stuff has lydocain (SP?) and works so well ! My aunt found it in Hawaii when she got burned. So if you get a burn, find this stuff !! I was able to swim and bike today....too bad I can't call it a brick with hours between them ! lol I have a bike question, I slow down on turns, is it normal to do that in tris ?.......i am too scared to scream around a turn while going downhill ! I also realized at 40mph down a hill (and when my foot silpped off of the pedal) that I'd really like to have the type of pedals on the spin bikes (material that your foot slips into). Not just a strap, but a literal material cage type thingy........ oh I was pizzed when my foot went flying off. Also, I wonder for those of you on nice bikes... there probably is no "slop" in the pedal when you are going up a hill is there ? My bike has this slop between where I pedal with one foot and then to the other........it's horrible ! |

Based on last year's results I thought I had a solid chance at placing in my age group but I still missed out I haven't seen the official results yet so I don't yet know how far back I was. Congratulations, Nicole! PB's make all the hard work worth it, don't they! Trish |

Veteran 243 | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) So, we spent the afternoon in the ER with my 14 yo son yesterday. I did manage to get my long run done in the am, though, in case you were wondering about my priorities! Anyway, my kid's so much like me, it scares me sometimes. He climbs up on the roof of his school to just sit and listen to music and be where no one else is. He's done it a hundred times, I'm sure, but yesterday he decided to get down a different way, lost his grip and fell, landing on his left arm almost entirely. That's 6 ft, 160 lbs on one hand & arm. Both the radius and ulna are broken and displaced about 2/3 of the way from wrist to elbow and a critical and problematic wrist bone is also split in two. He'll need surgery to plate the long bones and screw the cuboid bone back together, but because this was "Picnic Day weekend" at the local university (basically an open house and big excuse to have major parties) there were a lot of fractured bones and the surgeon isn't available until Wednesday. So, he's doped up on hyrdocodone, wrapped and splinted to the shoulder and lying flat on his back groaning with pain and misery! I did almost the exact same thing when I was about 11 - broke the same wrist bone, but landed more on my feet so the long bones weren't damaged (plus it helps a lot that I was younger, I'm sure). It's sooooo hard to have a child in pain! I hate that part. My poor husband has to teach all day Wednesday, so he'll be distracted and worried all day, I'm sure. At least I can be there with the kid. One good note, my son did confess to his new love interest while he was drugged up and she reciprocated, so he's quite happy about that! Sadly, she's a summer camp interest who lives a couple of hours away. But they'll work it out. Anyway, I may be a little distracted this week, depending on how everything goes! Trish |

My bike has this slop between where I pedal with one foot and then to the other........it's horrible ! I caught a bit too much sun on my face while at my son's lacrosse game on Saturday. I've been suffering with sinus pain, etc ever since my race on Saturday. I still managed to ride on Sunday but it definitely wasn't a great ride. You can get pedals with toe clips or probably add toe clips to your existing platform pedals. That might do the trick for you. Actually, I've got toe clips I'm not using; want to give them a try? If yes, please send your address again! Re: pedal slop, I assume you mean a period where you feel like nothing is happening? It could be a problem with your pedaling technique ("pedal circles and not squares") or it could be due to a poor bottom bracket on your bike. If it's the bike you are probably going to have to live with it until you can get a better bike. |

Absolutely normal to slow down going into a turn...just like driving...as you become more comfortable, you will be able to maintain more speed, but depends on how sharp the corner is, any debris on the road (be careful here!), traffic, and mostly comfort. The one little tip would be to keep your inside foot/pedal (so for a right turn- your right foot) up going into and through the turn, that way the pedal won't scrape on the road. Just take your time getting comfortable- the time that you might lose slowing down is nothing compared to the time lost due to a crash! |

Trish Sorry to hear about your son, Trish! Good thing he's young and he will heal just fine. The only recommendation I would have, is to ensure a solid physiotherapy regimen when he's ready as I have heard (and experienced) way too many cases of insufficient PT leading to almost permanent decreased range of motion and strength following injuries. Hope the surgery goes well, I'll be thinking of you! |

I had to make a 90 degree turn and I was being piggish about my speed and didn't want to slow down. I made the turn, but was on the hairy edge of the road! Since I live in Florida, I'm sure you can imagine what was butting up against the road -- sand! It would have been a train wreck!!! So yes, please slow down. |

Trish One of the things that happened to me in my car accident nearly 5 years ago was a very similar break -- radius, ulna, and wrist -- and I have a permanent plate in my arm (will his be permanent?). I had surgery within 10 hours, thank goodness. I can imagine the pain he is in. But I second what Yvonne said -- be sure to follow up on the physical therapy, but even still the rehabilitation will probably be painful, so be prepared for that. And I do not have full motion, but it's not detrimental. I wish him good luck! |

Extreme Veteran 600 Indiana | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) Good day all, I've spent all morning with my kiddo at the dr. trying to figure out if she has hypoglycemia....or something along that line. She got to play the "mommy catch pee pee" in the cup game, she loves that (LITERALLY GIGGLES HER HEAD OFF)....and pees all over me ! lol Then bless her heart, she had no food from last night and finally at 12:00 they get around to taking four viles of blood. She sat on my lap and cried her eyes out but did not move, she did not kick, just let them do it. After it was over she says to me with tears streaming down her face, "you let them hurt me", then turns to the tech and says "you hurt me to doctor"......... I'm trying to console her and the lovely sweet tech went and BOUGHT her m&m's and gave them to her! How sweet was that ? She said "I hate when they cry, I feel horrible'. but she got her on the first stick, did her job so well I was very pleased. So anyway.......mommy is glad that is over and I pray for a good outcome adn that most of what they tested for will come back negative ! Some chromosome/liver thing........ come on NEGATIVE ! Two weeks from now we should know (really, that long ?). ugh Happy workouts to you all !!!! |

Well, we just went out for an "easy" run -- easy for Dan, tougher for me. So we get nearly to the turnaround point, and hear a crash of thunder, then big rain drops come down. That's ok if you don't see lightning, but we're running by the bay and bayou, and you don't want to be caught out in a real thunderstorm. We turn around and within half a mile we see big lightning strikes! There was a house with an open garage so I went up to their door to see if they would mind if we just stood in their garage until the storm let up, but a big dog met me instead. So we ran up the road a little more, and climbed up on someone's porch. I guess they weren't home because they didn't chase us off! Well, it really disrupted our run... I hope everyone else is having a better day than that! |
