Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tahrens - 2009-06-23 11:06 AM One more thought. I was telling the hubby about Lonestar last night, more of an explaination of why we can't do it, and he looked at me with an odd expression and said, "I don't know. Sounds kind of fun." So don't rule us out. It will be a blast!!! Come on down, you know you want to.... |

My wife gave me the opposite look than Tracy's husband when I mentioned it. I brought my tri-bike back to the shop today to have them tighten a brake lever they forgot to, and to check out a creaking noise in the bottom bracket (I think). Well guess what...the back tire is flat! Now I am happy that I found this out before my race this weekend, but I have not had a flat in a tubular in 30 years. (I haven't ridden them for that long). I had to but a new one and when I get the flat home I have the fun job of trying to patch it. I remember hating that the last time I rode tham. But, at these prices who can afford not to patach them? I will be riding clinchers on my future training rides. I also order a 700c clincher training front wheel. I have a nice Spynergy rear waiting at home. Question: For those who use rear seat hydration systems, what brand and model do you use? Tracy: If it is any comfort, my inlaws arrive tomorrow. Thankfully we have a 2 week rule. I am not sure how I got wrangled into that though. It should be a 3 day rule! Have they stocked the frig yet? Do they help around the house? I feel your pain. FIL is very hard of hearing and very stubborn. Once he got on my nerves so bad I went to my woodshop to get away from him. He followed me there and proceeded to tell me I was doing everything wrong! Bear in mind he knows nothing about furniture making and thinks duct tape can fix everything! I did not kill him. That has to earn me some point with my wife, right? Doug |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JHagerman - 2009-06-23 11:13 AM For Lonestar, are we thinking relay or individual? HIM or IM? I cannot find the beginning of this conversation ![]() They have a HIM, Olympic or 1/4 Iron (not sure which one) and a sprint. You are welcome to do any or all or a relay. KEJ said he was setting up so that someone could do the first wave of the sprint and the last wave of olympic to order to do them both on Saturday. Bonus points for anyone who turns around and does the HIM on Sunday after that.... |

Doug I just got a Bontrager and while I have barely used it, I like it. It has a clip that holds the water bottle in if you go over bumps, but it is still easy to remove. A lot of them don''t have that feature and I see people jury rigging them with rubber bands to avoid the issue. It was only $35 at the Trek store. |

I have a 'travelroller' at home(canadian product) and I swear by it. Comes with 3 pressure-point balls..its awesome...http://www.travelroller.com/. Its a little harder than the foam rollers, but its great for the IT bands and such. Edited by TrevorC 2009-06-23 1:45 PM |

Check with the wife on that one though ![]() For stretching, I like to do several of the poses in this link, especially #10 the Kneeling Quadricep Stretch. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I second the use of TP equipment. I spend a lot of time with the quad roller and the massage ball. Their videos demonstrate how to use each properly to alleviate issues. It can be painful, but worth it. I am guessing you have issues with both your quads and hip flexors. It can be brought on by not stretching or using the muscles incorrectly. Biking should use a lot of hamstring and not nearly as much quad. If your hamstrings are weak (mine were) then you overrely on your quads and hip fleoxrs. Runing on the other hand will use a lot of quad. Do you do any stretching? Here are some basic stretches that you might want to add to your program. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stretching/SM00043 I should have mentioned one other thing, ice baths! Cannot beat them after a hard workout. Add a cup or two of epsom salts and baking soda to help alleviate acidity and sore muscles. Hope it helps! Suzy Edited by SSMinnow 2009-06-23 3:49 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TrevorC - 2009-06-23 3:46 PM Caution: serious question ahead: You don't. Steve just forces you into doing one! I asked Gordo the same question a few months ago because I had done a whopping three sprints when I made the leap. He did a webinar on it at EnduranceCorner.com that you can still listen to if you would like. He outlined a typical training plan so you have a reasonable idea of the commitment. Personally, I have a desire to do IM WI so moving to a HIM is definitely a prerequisite for me signing up. I felt I had a good running base so really needed to be willing to be work on the bike and more importantly swimming. I thought if I gave myself from Boston to September it would be plenty of time. After doing a 1m swim last weekend, I feel pretty good about it, but am still concerned about the length of a HIM and nailing the nutrition. While I know I won't truly race the first HIM, I don't want to just survive it either. I don't take what's a head of me lightly. I am lucky in that I have plenty of time to train--no kids, a flexible job and an understanding husband. If I had more obligations it would have been a harder decision. I am interested in other people's perspective. Suzy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TrevorC - 2009-06-23 4:46 PM Caution: serious question ahead: I survived the the Olympic and was challenged into the half. Seriously, I think it was just the next progession. When I started I literally couldn't run a half mile and a super sprint was a challenge for me. Then as time went on and my training improved it was the next challenging distance. Did sprints one year, then sprints with 1 olympic and 1 10 mile run/race, so the next year came the half. Some of you have blown me away with the speed at which you have advanced through the distances. But desire has most of the reason to do a distance. If you don't like to go long distances, there is no reason to do the half or olympics. It doesn't mean you are more or less of a triathlete b/c you race certain distances. I did them to try them and see what I like. Personally I think the olympic is my favorite. I'm not fast enough to be good at sprints. Doing one half a year is a fun challenge, but the olympic distance challenges my training and fitness level without being all consuming. |

I usually take my triathlete magazine with me and force myself to read at least two LONG articles. The only thing that is a killer for me is my feet. OUCH. Junk? what junk ![]() |
