Jackie has a point... But... I just came home from a 12k run with the running club and barely managed to hang on to few 65yo+ guys. Embarrasing. On the other hand I can beat my son who is half my age in 5k run (he can't go any longer...). Seems that when it comes to recreational athletes, age is secondary to the ammount of work you put in. In most cases.

Sorry for starting the Sept. challenge like this, but today was long bike day and the guys I went out with are training for IM Cozumel.

Today a 85 mile, 4:38 ride + 30 min brick run

Like hell you're sorry!

Gabe: Looked at your logs. Tell me you HRM was on the fritz during that run?!?

I'm starting off with a bang thus month too, a rest day. Unscheduled too. I drove around the race course with my 9 year, cheering on my wife. She ran this marathon to help pace her friend to a 3:45 or better BQ time. So around mile twentyish when her friend had it in the bag my wife backed off and used the race as one of her 20 milers for Twin Cities marathon in October.
Speaking of BQ, it's something I'll never be fast enough to do. But we're going out this spring anyways since my wife is fast enough. I'm thinking about trying to raise money and get in with a charity spot. Is that lame? Is it something runners argue about, just like triathletes argue about Kona qualifiers vs. lottery winners?

In a word: yes. Valerie Bertanelli ran Boston. Probably a quarter to a third of those who run Boston any given year don't "qualify" but get in through a corporate sponsor or charity. So yes. People argue about these things. Everyone needs something to do.

jackiep - 2012-09-01 4:50 PM I make a motion that we divide up into two groups, younger than 45 and 45 and over.  I don't have to compete with 15 years younger in a race, why do I have to do it in the challenge?
Jackie, that is the reason why the pace doesn't matter and the minimum duration is only thirty minutes. Also, after being third in last month's, why would you worry? You were only a hair away from being the winner.

I think the rules are set in a way that we all compete on fair, leveled ground and I also believe that the success of this group is based on its heterogeneity. I wouldn't want to separate people by age, gender, etc.

Can anybody else chime in?

Hey Joe, I just started having problems with my HR strap and am getting off the chart readings. Fortunately 200 bpm avg hr was not my real hr and I need to figure out how to fix the strap issue.

Andy,

Regarding Boston, I was saying "yes" that people argue about the difference between qualifying and getting in through a charity or corporate sponsor. People argue about everything. I was not saying "yes" that getting in through a charity is lame. (which was another one of your questions). A lot of people raise a lot of money for good causes using this route. That is why they offer it. I don't think it's lame at all.

I'm in. Testerday 50 min trail run. Scott is up, it was nice to have company on the run. Still having bike issue, they send wrong wheel. I can still use it, seller and I worked a deal where I will use it for my race then exchange it. I discovered what a Shimano cassette tool is, and I don't have one. Fortunately a friend went downstate and stopped at the LBS a 1.5 hours away. I should have that today. I don't know how I have not cracked yet.

17 mile run - 2:27:47.  Ran at about MAF +5 in super humid conditions with some rain for good measure.  25 miles in two days and my legs are shot.  Took a nice long ice bath.

As far as separating folks by age/gender, I see no reason to differentiate.  All the folks in this tough are tough and nobody gets a free pass Smile!

13 mile long slow run this morning, I need to figure out a way to carry or stash more fluids on my routes, I was parched for the last 4 miles and had my wife drive out to meet me with about 2.5 to go.  Not especially hot yet today either, maybe in the 70's right now.

I use an amphipod system and love it.  Can carry 4 bottles and I guess I could buy more bottle mounts and carry more if needed.

Ok, back from la la land, time to gets serious for my Nov Oly. I will play for September. Today a rest day, but yesterday a long ride (30 miles @ 1:48'11). Also planning to start p90X sometime during September, but will make sure that S/B/R takes priority. Also, having a hard time keeping my HR in check with the heat and humidity.

Went for a ride yesterday around the bike route for the City of Durham Duathlon, which just happens to go past my house.  I picked the route because it's relatively short (just over 16 miles), so a good length to do after work.  Completely forgot to take into account that it includes the local nightmare hill...  My legs didn't thank me for it, but I felt good when I got to the top without stopping.  And it was worth it for the down afterwards Laughing  I've decided I'm going to ride that route regularly to monitor my progress.

No workout for today. Had a look and tried on some Newtons. Any one got any good or bad experiences with them. I was read an article the other day that said its no use having big heal support when you land on the middle of your foot. I looked at my runners and the heel is like new but not the middle. Are newton( or any other brand) the way to go? Sorry if tis question has been bashed around already.

I did a TriFesta this weekend; it was a USTA sanctioned event.  Saturday was a Sprint (I did not count the swim for the challenge - too short).

I won the Grand Master's female division (don't ask how many in the divisionLaughing, which means I qualified for National AG Championship

if i want to go next year.  Yesterday, i started the olympic race but was disqualified because my tire blew and I had nothing to fix it - duh.  There was a kind young man from a bike store at the event and he brought a new wheel to me on the course.  Before the tire blew, I also stopped to help another participant who had fallen off his bike and was unable to release his foot from the pedal.  The bike was on top of him. By the time, i completed the bike course the pool was already being set up for the super sprint so I could not do the second swim before the run.  All in all the Olympic race was a bust for me.  It is my first DQ.  I did the super sprint - 200 m swim, 6 mile bike, and 1 mile run.  I placed first in my age group.  Again, don't ask out of how many - Kiss.

It was a fun weekend.  For our challenge, i am only counting a S/B/R that took longer than 30 minutes.  Is this the correct way of counting race events?
