Dave! Always good to hear from you. Glad you had a good vacation! When is your tri? It's your first right? I think you and I are the only true tri newbs left at this point

BTW if you're watching TdF coverage you already know this, but there's a coupon code for ordering from headsweats directly (30% off) - BOBKE That may be cheaper than ordering through amazon, it may not, but usually the codes are 15-25% so 30% is a big deal

I may or may not have hinted that I've wanted to do one particular triathlon for about 6 years but "things" always seemed to get in the way. I did a YMCA Sprint Tri this year in June. That sounds like exactly what you're gearing up for at the end of this month right? In my brain I'm not officially going to consider myself a triathlete until I do the Oly that I've wanted to do for 6 years.. It's August 9th and it's located a little north west of Philly at Lake Nockamixon. http://www.steelmantriathlon.com/

Thanks for the info (and the coupon code) I pulled the trigger on both the hat and the headband for under the bike helmet. i have the crank in my helmet too so that should work for me.

I ran over that bridge today for my workout, I felt like I was on fire. I'm gonna give that hat a workout.

John, Your Tri is at the end of this month right? How goes the tri clinic?

Alan - THANK YOU for this! This is an absolute wealth of information, one that I've happily ignored work to read and absorb this afternoon I'm really coming in to this bike thing a lot like the swim thing - I don't know what I don't know. I'm a runner and have taken the past 25 years to try and get that right...

Anyway I hadn't realized Flo had a wheelset at the $500 point. The 30s look like exactly what I'm looking for. I've signed up (preregistered? not exactly sure how this works yet) for the July 16th sale. I'm guessing I still need to be on the site at that exact time credit card in hand. I'll keep the Shimanos in mind as well in case my budget gets crunched.

As near as I can tell the weight for my wheelset (Bontrager Race - not Race Lite, Race X Lite, etc.) is around 1750g. They're a shallow V, and the super cool looking Rolf designed 'double spoke' lacing pattern. I'm going to need to replace at least the rear, but I'd prefer a matching set....what are my options? I'm not terribly heavy (currently 167lb/76kg/just under 12 stone for any brits) so I'm not worried about load for my wheels to support (aka don't really want Askiums). I don't want to think too hard about budget - if I had a grand, I'd get Flos and be done with it - I'm absolutely sold on those. But, I don't have a grand... I'm willing to go up some weight for something more aero if there's a benefit, but really don't want to feel like I'm riding through sludge - I love how easily my bike accelerates. BTW I've tried searching the general forum for this, but the search function....leaves a lot to be desired. It either comes back with no results, or 2,431 pages of results.

I still recommend Flos. You can get a set of the Flo 30s for around $500. They're more aero than most other 30mm rims but they're also aluminum and very durable. You won't find a better or equivalent set at that price. You can get a set of Shimano A500s for $250 (cad) and they're a solid wheel. A little heavier than what you are currently running but they're durable. That's what I use for training (and weekly races). I've put over 10,000km on them and only needed truing once so far. Other than Flo, you won't get a useful aerodynamic wheel in the price range you're looking. There are certainly 'aero' wheels out there for under $1000 but they'll only look aero, they won't perform aero.

Originally posted by firebert I'm willing to go up some weight for something more aero if there's a benefit, but really don't want to feel like I'm riding through sludge - I love how easily my bike accelerates.

I'm going to rant here for a minute. Weight has almost no effect on acceleration compared to aerodynamics. Weight requires a linear increase in power to overcome. i.e. accelerating from 10 to 20kph requires 50 more watts, accelerating from 20 to 30kph requires another 50 watts, 30 to 40kph, another 50 watts etc. (I'm making these numbers up for the sake of the example) Aerodynamic forces require an exponential increase in power. Accelerating from 10 to 20kph requires 50 more watts, accelerating from 20 to 30kph requires 80 more watts, accelerating from 30 to 40kph requires 100 more watts etc. So an aero wheel set, even if heavier, will accelerate better than light weight wheels. The only time a heavier wheel set will 'feel like sludge' is if the wheel is heavier but not more aerodynamic.

Here's a thing I wrote about aerodynamics and weight: https://raceontario.wordpress.com/2015/04/30/aerodynamics-debunking-the-myths/
Here's another thing I wrote about buying wheels: https://raceontario.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/buyers-guide-wheels/

Beer Thor your selections sound great. I'm currently enjoying a Lagunitas Sucks (double IPA out of california - try it if you can!). At my desk. Once again, working late (no cracks about how I wouldn't have to if I wasn't reading aero wheel material online!), and the VP came by and poured it for me. Can't say no to that.

Tri class Back on this week, after a break for the holiday last week (I got in a good swim in it's place). Tonight she says we're doing 'aqua boot camp'. I am not very excited for this, considering how bad I am in the pool.

Dave O I gotcha. So that leaves me as the sole tri newb then! Yes my first is at the end of the month (the 26th) and is a YMCA sprint. I guess technically it's a super sprint, though the run is the full 5k; the swim is short of a 1/4 mile and the bike is only 9mi. I have 3 more tri classes and the one tri clinic where I get to do the swim and bike portions of the actual course, before my race. Other than transition I am likely to be very well prepared for this

Spin The classes I've taken are just Y classes, not specific for road training or anything else. The two instructors that I like the most (incl the one with the RPM advice) are both avid cyclists and pretty much teach spin to get the free Y membership. I'm still taking the class in the summer partially because it's a very convenient way to get an hour of cycling work in, and partially because I take it with a friend of mine who I also do my tuesday night Boot Camp class with. We keep each other accountable for the workouts. And she does a different Thursday night small group so we check in then too.

We don't do any of the nonsense with the jumps or dancing around or - pedaling backwards? never heard that one! -... I do sing along with the music sometimes though, the tunes are cranking and just like when I run - a good song always gives me an energy boost.

India Session Ale, 5.5%, IBU 45

This beer is perfect for those that love IPAs, but want to drink more than one in a sitting. It's got a good hop flavour, but it's much more subtle at an IBU of 40. The low ABV makes this beer perfectly sessionable.

2)I'm so Freaking Hoppy

Imperial IPA, 7.3%, IBU 75

This IPA has a perfect balance for a beer of this strength and complexity. It’s perfectly carbonated, golden-orange in colour with a thick, ivory head. The hops explode with flavour followed by notes of grapefruit and orange.

3)Loud Mouth Soup-not sure about this one. It might be a sampler then decide.

Double IPA, 9%, IBU 93

Our double IPA has a big, explosive hop flavour. It's brewed with a sh&t ton of hops and a sh&t ton of malt. Miraculously enough, this beer came out hoppy and flavourful, without being super sweet.

Those sound like three I need to try. :-)

I didn't have problems in my first two races last year but the last one I TOTALLY went off course...AT THE END! And I was swimming hard that day too, the only time I ever went full out on the swim. That was just not paying attention though. Now it's more that it's harder to do practice/training OWS and sight...I just can't see a decent landmark. It really hung me up yesterday. Today I almost threw in the towel and called off the weekend's race, but I hung in there and was able to get in about 800 nonstop. Hoping my practice swim goes ok on Saturday.

Was it Devon & Gretchen talking about how exhausting swimming is? Geez, I can barely get moving today and I could have fallen asleep without dinner last night.

Last workout before my race on Sunday. Hour bike plus brick mile. Happy to report that the bike was my fastest ever. Unhappy to report that the brick mile was miserable. Oh well--win some, lose some. Now I just have to pack and try not to panic. I've done well all week at staying calm.

I find that the first mile of any run, especially coming off the bike, is never fun. After that first mile my legs get into running mode and I'm good to go. Don't let that bad first mile get you down!

DEFINITELY!!!!! I always tell myself not to evaluate ANY way that I feel during that first mile! Just slog through it and then at 1.5 miles, when you ask yourself how you feel, that sensation will be gone. You'll be back running again.

Good luck with the race!

Got dealt a bit of a blow today....standard eye recheck found inflammation and scarring....all somewhat normal complications of the condition but I didn't see it (HA!) coming. Combined with this massive fatigue and my feeling somewhat overwhelmed yesterday during the OWS it is REALLY hard to talk myself into the race this weekend....or rather, it's really easy to talk myself out of it. I was initially just going to cancel the weekend (race is several hours away so we're making a vacation of it), but just got home and my husband has everything all set out (even though I don't think he really wanted to go--we just got home from Idaho two days ago). I think I'll just bring everything and if I'm not up for the tri, do the 5K. I intentionally did not register for this race in advance so I'd have some flexibility.

I'm registered for another race next weekend so that one's going to happen no matter what unless the air quality gets poor (forest fires), but I am considering changing my registration to the Try-A-Tri (only difference is the length of the swim, but it's a noncompetitive event). I need to do it today if I'm going to, so have to make up my mind soon. I need to decide what's best for me....boosting my confidence gradually or just jumping in & doing what I'd planned. Both have their advantages, I guess.

Sorry to hear it....Are you up for the Try a Tri distance, or the 5k? If you can muster the energy, either is low pressure enough they should just be the fun part without the stress part, right? and if you have a vacation getaway planned around it - sounds like fun.

But if any of it is going to be stressful then I'd be tempted to stay home, relax, and catch up.

No try-a-tri this weekend, just a full sprint/oly/half along with various other running distances.

For this weekend, I'll see how I feel in the morning. If this exhaustion doesn't ease up, I'm inclined to skip the race Sunday. I *think* it is just from a lot of swimming the last couple of days, in which case I should feel great tomorrow. If not, it's my body saying I shouldn't be racing. Big question is what I need to do about next weekend. If I do the full sprint on Sunday, I'm going to be disappointed I dropped to the Try a Tri next weekend, but if I'm clearly not up to the race on Sunday then it's probably best to do the less competitive event next weekend. But I need to decide....now....no changes after today are allowed.

Edited....I sent in the request to change just now. Better safe than sorry.

Evening all!

Was feeling tired this morning so I decided to push my third swim workout back until tomorrow morning.

Slept in a little and went to my gym to do some tempo/speed work.

Started with a little warm up to stretch the ol' legs out. Moved into 6x800m started at a 8:00min/mile and stepped down every 2 reps until I hit around 6:25min/mile. Backed off to around 10:30min/mile for the rest.

Finished at around 4miles on the treadmill, was feeling really good coming off so I decided to pop a gel and log a few more miles on the road.

Had a fantastic run outside, really starting to get to the point where I look forward to my runs.

Finished the day at 10.5miles total! That puts me very close to leading BDAS for the week in running, as well as swimming on garmin connect

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Race day for my daughter! 10:45am tentative start.

My son and I volunteered for  setup and were up at 5:30am.

Some interesting transition setups...one person laid down a large beach blanket....all they needed was lawn chair and a cooler for beer!

Hopefully have some pics later!

Sandi- sorry to hear about your troubles. Tri isn't going anywhere so do what makes you feel comfortable it may take time to build back up.

Thor- have fun

Dave sorry I couldn't get live track to work. I tried twice but didn't want to sit in t1 any longer esp after that swim which summed up in a word would be awful.

Grethen let us know how the race went

I will do a full race report later (I'm at work now). Nothing like doing a tri driving home 3 hours to shower and get dressed for work. for now I will send a picture, I left my medal in the truck and didn't want to walk back to get it.

P.S. The girl at the finish line asked "does your shirt say bad a$$?" I told her it sure does She is the one I had take the picture for me.

Hi all!!

Just a quick update on my race today--full race report to follow when all my brain cells are working again. Race was great--super well organized, friendly folks, and a good route. I panicked on the swim, but managed a goodish time with a strong backstroke. Bike was awesome, way faster than my goal of 14.0mph. Run was meah...could have been better, but I came in just 16 seconds over my goal, including getting a huge calf cramp and attacked by a territorial bird at mile 2.6! Overall, 7 min faster than my overall goal and I feel like I left it all in the course!! Thanks for all your support!!!! BDAS rocks!!!!!

Just walked in from camping but wanted to say a huge congrats to Gretchen for leaving it on the course and beating her goal time and Scott too!! Way to rock the shirt!! (Everyone here thinks it says bad a$$ too!). LOL.
Well done you guys!!

Thor, your kids are ridiculously cute!!! Congrats to your daughter (and her coach!)!

Sandi - see how it goes with the shorter race - there are plenty of races around and once your body is rested and confidence is where it needs to be - pick another race!! We will be here to cheer you on! Is this the same Try a Tri you did last year? Also, it's tough to swim in a mucky body of water, gosh do I know that!

Devon, you are killing your runs!!

Great weekend for all BDAS members!

Congrats to Gretchen -great difference with your new bike-, Scott -proud of BDAS shirt-, and Thor's daughter, coach and father!

Sandi, sure time will help, a bit frustrating I guess but for sure you will race in better conditions very soon!

Trying to follow Devon's chart, I did 100k bike ride under a terrrible sun, and today 80 min run - trying to catch up for a HIM after the summer.

Nice Races Gretchen, Scott and Thor's daughter! It sounds like there were a lot of great workouts too.

Sandi- I'm on the fence about entering a longer or shorter race right now too. The long one would be a huge step up for me- and I'm not sure if I'm not better just doing the shorter race since the longer one will be there next year.

I spent this weekend hanging with granny - my granny gear that is. I need to plug in my garmin to see but I was over 1k ft of climbing both days this weekend on 2 hour mountain bike rides. The race I'm questioning has 3400 ft of climbing (2700 on the bike) and I'm worried I'm going to hurt myself trying to get there. I have til the 20th of July to decide. (Although I'm thinking of asking if I can sign up for the long one and change to the short one closer to the race.)

Here are the elevation maps of the race... http://www.xterraplanet.com/utah/utahTri.html
