Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Gretchen, Very good sign that your back is feeling much improved. And even better that you're taking an extra rest day. Coach Gretchen would approve of Athlete Gretchen's decisions. I'll 2nd Mikes jump on the trainer as a first workout back, but will add do the spin sitting up, don't try and spend a bunch of time on the aero bars with a dodgy back. Yes, obvious I know. @Robert, Nice work ticking the workouts off. Sorry about the sh1tty swim. If you're looking for replacement goggles I have had great success with zoggs predators. Highly recommend. @Mike, Got to love car troubles. I'm guessing that as Dad, none of the issues are your fault, but you still get to be the one to rearrange life to fix everything? That doesn't sound at all familiar. Solid treadmill run. Me, Seems silly as it's only week 2 of my plan but it's a rest week. (of course its actually week 3, but I skipped week 1) So far I've had a day off, 3 40 minute treadmill runs, 1 with 8x30" Z5 intervals, the rest easy. 4 bodyweight sessions and I swam this morning on the way to work. (school holidays, so I get to run away 1/2 an hour early instead of the full morning routine) Just easing back into things in the pool. 750m this time, again with plenty of rest. But every interval was in the 1:55-1:58/100m range so I'm happy the technique is still kind of there. Not quite starting from zero. Tonight I'll be on the bike, with a couple of runs and a zwift ride over the weekend. Edited by bulfrog 2024-07-18 4:53 PM |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Originally posted by Rollergirl so race week is upon us-. Luckily, I didn't do this race last year (there wasn't one) so the past Nat to beat is 2022-Nat who was not as good as 2023 Nat. I should get her Goal times (2022 time) S 340m - 07min22 @2.10/100 (07:52) T1 1:00 (01:14) B 9.2km: 20:00 (22:19)- taking the old racer instead of the heavy mountain bike T2: 1:00 (1:15) R 6.5km 35:12 @5:25k/m (37:08)- Reading my RR, I took my time last time and averaged 5:43 Yeah, lets go race week. Best of luck for the weekend. We know you're going to smash it. |

Member 3147 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN A third rest day in a row for me...I'm starting to get antsy! My back is feeling better. It no longer hurts when I stand up and I can walk with not much pain. It still hurts when I roll over in bed, which I do by arching my back into a bridge (shoulders and feet on the bed, everything else in the air) and then twisting. Maybe that has something to do with the issue! :D Anyway, I'm glad it is feeling better, but I'm taking another day. Every day I wake up and assess whether it feels better and I have made myself be honest (not like when I my leg was injured in February!). It is a mental challenge, but I know I need to take these days to be race ready. As my wife says...we are eye on the prize at this point. Every choice I make right now has to be that which will increase my chances of arriving at the start line healthy enough to do two ultra distance tris in two weeks (eeps...that just sounds dumb now that I've written it out like that!). The up side of all of this is that I have been incredibly productive with my summer research program this week and have just about finished the manuscript for an article I've been working on (not continuously!) for two years!! I almost feel like a real academic! |

HR stayed in Z2 the entire time, even with a couple miles in the low 10s. I'm excited!! (The weather is still agreeable). Saturday activities include brunch with Mom, a wedding, and then a Royals game with some friends tonight. |

The bad news: I ran slower than 2 years ago, even though took it really easy that day and I was as heavy as I am now (I thought that what kept me from running as fast as last year was the extra 6 or 7lbs I am carrying this year, well, a quick look at MFP entries tells me I weighed the same 2 years ago. and I still was faster.) What’s going on???? So effing frustrating! Edited by Rollergirl 2024-07-20 1:35 PM |

Sorry your run is frustrating you…it is the bane of my triathlon life too. Just when I think I am getting a handle on it…. If you were overall faster, your bike or run must have been better. Celebrate that! |

What’s going on???? So effing frustrating! If I recall correctly you were having a struggle with the run a couple of years ago, then just started getting aggressive in your run strategy. And we're getting older, so there's that unfortunately. With the run volume I'm doing I feel like I should be within :30/mile of what I was doing 10 years ago, and I'm not even close. |

God a solid swim in yesterday morning with my masters team (*ahem* Mike, where were you, sir?). Got in 2200 yds. Actually had some hip and back pain, I think b/c I sat on the ground for a long time Friday night at the concert I went to. Need lots of stretching. Paddleboarded for 2 hours this morning, so that was fun! |

What’s going on???? So effing frustrating! Well first up well done on your race. I think that this is 2024 Nats first victory over your past self nemesis? So even if not perfect well done. Lots of possible reasons for your run being a bit slower. Like Mike says, age, after about 25 doesn't help us get faster. So that's definitely a possibility. But there are lots of factors to think about. You biked faster, yes you're on a faster bike, but how were your effort levels? If you over biked a little that would slow your run. How was the swim? if you came out of the water carrying more fatuige, either from pushing more or dealing with harder conditions, that could also cause issues for the run. Nutrition? Even in a sprint, you're out there long enough that you may have bonked to a degree. What you had during the race could be a factor, and/or what you had in the day or 2 leading up effecting your carb stores. It's a tricky sport, everything stack on top of eachother and a lot of the time, a disappointing run is more to do with what came before T2 than your actual run fitness. The other thing to consider though is of course your run training. What do your workouts/run volume look like now, compared to 2 years ago? I'd say any differences there are more significant than 6lbs. But overall, you beat your past self. You had a fun race. Be happy, life's good. |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Mike. You missed swimming? Obviously I'm terrible at getting to the pool so it would be totally hypocritical for me to comment. But you know. @Nicole. Nice job getting to your swim. I've never been on a paddle board, but i imagine the balance needed to stay upright makes it an awesome core workout. Hopefully the sore back/hips is nothing. @Robert, Nice job on staying in Z2. Its always so tempting/easy to creep up into the grey area. Especially when the run feels good and comfortable. Me; I'm still 100% for July bodyweight stuff, but now it's my turn to pick up a little niggle. My left elbow was quite sore/unstable on Friday nights workout, so I'm dropping pushups for a little bit and hopefully with a bit of rest it will fix itself. Otherwise pretty miserable weather down here the last few days, the only outdoor workout I got in this week was my long run Sunday morning and it was nasty, absolutely torrential rain, still workouts in crappy weather count for double right? For the week: Swim, x1, 750m, 20 min Bike, x2, 2 hours (all zwift) Run, x5, 31km, 4: hr 8 min Total of 6 1/2 hours SBR, happy with that. Also, x7 bodyweight sessions, 47 minutes. Keeping that streak rolling 21/21. On to what's going to be my first decent build week for the marathon plan. Should be good, but calling for a 14 mile (23km) long run is a bit intimidating. Ironman 2021 would be the last time I've run longer than the half marathon distance. So that's something to look forwards to i guess. And of course ever increasing long runs over the next 15 weeks or so. |

And what are you doing sitting on the lawn at Merriweather (@ everyone else - that's the concert venue...it's a covered pavilion with lawn seating outside of it)? I thought we graduated past that when we turned 30. |

399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Happy Monday everyone and welcome to a new week of training! 15 mile bike to kick things off for me this week. Unfortunately, my Achilles was trying to be dumb yesterday, so I stayed off my feet as much as possible, plus foam rolling and stretching. It's better today, and the cycling helped loosen it up. We'll see how it feels tomorrow, I may forego the run and let it rest some more if it's still tight. This week is the first build week in my half marathon plan, so yay for speed work on Thursday this week if all goes well, then 8 miles on Saturday. Next week is a vacation to my in-laws in Nebraska, so I'm dragging the bike to get some longer rides in with no time constraints. And somehow, Amazon misplaced my new swim goggles in the mail. LOL! |

Expert 4929 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Good all around training week for me last week: Swim: 2x, 4350 yards, both good sessions though didn't make Masters on Saturday Yesterday's 5 mile long run was a bit of a slog, and I'm a little sore today, and was somehow awake for much of the night last night. Will get to bed early tonight and start the week off tomorrow morning with some run intervals. Signed up for my late season tri on the last weekend of September. I also have two 5Ks, the bike leg in a relay, and will finish out the year with a 10K at the Baltimore Running Festival. And I'm sherpa for once for my daughter at nationals. By the way, she's buying this (different wheelset, though, going with something a little deeper for racing):
