maxmansmom - 2009-04-21 8:47 PM thanks so much to all of you for your inspires and support for my kiddo !  I appreciate it.  Two weeks is a long time to wait for results isn't it ?
Well, anyway, the next few days will be SUPER busy !
I've had to slow down on how much I am on the computer, turns out it was really hurting my tennis elbow to use the mouse on the laptop. GOOD GRIEF.
Anyway, I'm in another one of those few days where working out is not gonna happen. Man I hate that !  Thursday morning I'll be back in the pool "ahhhh" never saw the day I'd love to swim !lol
Off to do some inspires for my lovely teamies !

I didn't think I'd be here either, but I really enjoy swimming!

So I need a little help from my mentor group....as you may know I am currently with a local tri club of mostly beginners (of which I am one) but I am looking for a bit more guidance with my training. I will be meeting with the head coach of our tri club on Thursday to discuss possible options of how his coaching group may support me (outside of the tri club) with my goal of completing IMCanada in August.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on:
What types of questions should I be asking?
What questions should I be prepared to answer?
What information should I bring with me?

Thanks!

Hmm... I'm really out of my depth here.  I just charged off on my HIM training without considering getting coaching so I don't really know what to expect.  But I think the whole thing centers around planning and building up without injury.

I guess the obvious ones you should be prepared to answer are:  what are your goals for IM, how much time are you willing to devote to training, what events are your strength/weakness (so that he can tailor a plan that gives you balance), and maybe how much do you know right now about planning, nutrition, etc.

Then you could ask him him what sort of interaction you'll have, how often, and how will he give you feedback and advice.

What to bring with you -- your checkbook?

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

x2 the checkbook!

My master's swim club just hired a new coach last summer and we got to interview 3 candidates, all of whom were vastly different in their approaches to adult athletes. One was sort of a recreational/social organizer type, one wanted to try every new approach he found, and the one we hired wanted to push the club back into the competitive limelight. Our last coach was in the recreational/social organizer camp and the workouts are vastly different now! I'm sure we'll lose a few members and gain others as we go through this transition. The point being that we had to decide what we wanted before we were able to find the coach who could meet our needs.

Cheri had great suggestions. I'd also either bring a computer so you can show him your logs or print them out for the past 3 months - that will allow him to get a more accurate picture of where you are, rather than where you think you are (but both are important!). And maybe a copy of the plan you'd pick if you were on your own? I'd also go into it with a definite idea of what you want to get out of it (the race, that is) and stand your ground!

Questions to ask: what's his background, training, education, goals and philosophy. Are there different commitment levels at different prices? What sorts of support are available if you get injured (does he work with and sports medicine types? PT?)? Who else has he worked with? Can you contact them?

Just like any other shopping trip, if you go into it knowing what you want, your chances of getting it without wasting money are much better!

Good luck!

Just wanted to post about a recent snack bar find. (Not snackbar like at a football game or swim meet, but snack bar like clif bar!) Mrs. May's Trio bars. They're gluten free (Susie!), HFCS free, sugar free (they do have cane juice), peanut free and very tasty! About 290 calories each, 6 g of protein, 20 g carbs, some salt, and not gooey! They're a little sticky and I don't think it would be safe to eat them on the move because they have whole nuts & dried fruit in them, but for a special needs bag or a long ride with stops - perfect!

Happy training teamies!

Hi team...

I am back! I am very tired from the long drive yesterday..and all the fun we had on the beach...but back!

sorry for my absence...

I appreciate all the inspires while I was gone...my dad seems to be doing a tad better...if we can just get him the drugs he needs that would be great! but they cost $2000 a week! just not in our budget..but we are trying to get some co-pay assistance....but MY GOODNESS THERE IS A TON OF RED TAPE INVOLVED! meanwhile he is not getting the drug until then! SUX...cuz we could see the difference it was making! I will sell everything I own if I have to!

Lisa...sorry I never got a chance to even call you! I am amazed at how quickly the days flew by! seems like I was going from the moment I got up til I laid my head down on the pillow...no time to sit and relax...was more just GO GO GO! but I do plan on taking another trip there soon! so can I get a rain check on the meeting???

Hope everyone is doing well...will be around to check in on your logs in the next few days...hoping to see lots of activity!....race season is here!

have a great hump day!

All good questions/thoughts and suggestions that I will definitely bring along! As he is the coach of our tri club, I already know that I will get along with him really well. I have also heard fantastic things about him, both as coach and athlete, from numerous sources so it will mostly be about how we can make this work and of course the $$. Thanks, Trish and Cheri! If anyone else has some thoughts, please share too!

I retreieved this off the web...there are many other great questions...do a google search...you will come up with some top notch questions and ones that may slip your mind....good luck! hoping you will pass on your questionaire as this is something I intend to do this year too! time to move up a notch in this tri world stuff! good luck. When is the meeting???

Choosing Your Triathlon Coach

So you have signed up for a race. You are excited and a little scared. You "know" that you have what it takes to finish, but want to get the most of out of the limited time that you have to train. You have significant commitments in your non-tri life, and would like to minimize the disruption on your family and work colleagues. You need some advice to get you through your triathlon journey, and are thinking that a coach could be the way to go.

I have been on both sides of the athlete/coach relationship, and wanted to share some ideas on how to get the most out of your coach. Here are some key things to remember when considering a potential coaching relationship:

Trust
You will be trusting your entire season to another person. You should check the coach's credentials, experience and background. Ask for references and speak to current clients. Review sample workout plans, and discuss the coach's approach to building the season.

Goals
Communicate your goals for the year - help your coach place triathlon within the framework of your overall life situation. I have found the best results are achieved by having a limited number of quantitative as well as qualitative goals. Set the goals early in the season, and tailor the year towards achieving them.

Personality and Style
There are a lot of coaches out there, and many training philosophies. Different strategies work for different folks, and you should make sure that your coach's training style matches your needs. Particular things to watch for are the approach to intensity, volume and recovery. This is where the variation can be greatest, and will have the most significant impact on your performance (both positively and negatively).

The Plan
Many coaches offer different levels of service and price points. Make sure that you choose the plan that best fits your needs. If you are looking for frequent interaction, make sure that your coach will be happy with the level of assistance that you require. Agree expectations in advance - document what you need from your coach as well as what the coach needs from you.

Share of Mind
If you are paying for individual coaching, make sure you will get an adequate share of mind. Find out how many athletes are currently being coached. Discuss your coach's other commitments. Be sure that you are confident that your plan will get the focus it deserves. Once again, make your expectations clear in advance.

Over Communication
You are buying your coach's advice, experience and support. Ask a lot of questions. Understand what lies behind the yearly, monthly and weekly planning. You will become a better athlete if you understand the reasons behind each session. It is also your job to make sure that your coach understands how you are doing. Take advantage of every opportunity to update on your progress. You need to be totally honest. If you were so tired you couldn't get out of bed, make sure that message gets across. Be totally open and clear with what is happening. I think this is even more important in an on-line relationship because of the lack of visual feedback (tough to hide overtraining at the track, easy on the keyboard). Don't BS your coach! This is essential when you are tired, injured or not coping.

Belief
Once you have committed, paid your cash, built the season up... do the program. This sounds easy, but in fact, many people second guess their coach and adjust the plan. There should be a reason behind every workout. If you have doubts, ask questions until you are satisfied. You are paying for expert advice, so use it.

One Plan
Coaches should enhance the belief of an athlete in their ability to achieve their goals. The power of belief is one of the most powerful forces in life. The best coaches, friends and training partners all share a unified belief in the ability of the athlete. People that do not serve this power of belief are best avoided. In my opinion, creating and enhancing the power of belief is the central role of the coach. It is also the most important attribute for success in life.

Structure
Due to their experience, coaches should have the ability to provide the athlete with a structured environment that will enable them to move safely and consistently towards their goals. Structure gives the athlete a feeling of control and confidence - thereby strengthening the power of belief as well as increasing the probability of success.

Knowledge
Coaches should be constantly seeking new training techniques and expanding their knowledge about all aspects of training, nutrition and recovery. The goal of every coach should be to become a mind-body master. Likewise, athletes that want to perform at the highest levels should make it a priority to understand the purpose of each session and to become mind/body masters in their own right. Gaining a clear understanding of a coach's philosophy will strengthen an athlete's power of belief.

Open
Coaches should be open to (and with) their athletes. Athletes should know that they will not be judged by their coaches. This builds trust between coach and athlete, increasing the effectiveness of the relationship.

Responsibility
Coaches must take full responsibility for the programs that they create. Likewise, athletes must take full responsibility for executing the coach's program to the best of their ability. When doubts arise, coach and athlete should review them together and agree to the overall strategy. This builds trust and strengthens the power of belief.

Julie, I don't know when you're planning on heading back this way, but something to keep in mind.  The Sugarland Memorial Herman Tri is on June 28th, if you're interested.  I did it last year when it was a women's event, this year its coed, and I'm planning on doing it again. Hope you had a nice break!

Does anyone belong to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group?  One opened in our area this year and we decided to buy into it.  You "prepay" a local farmer for a share of his crops for the entire growing season which roughly adds up to $10-$15 dollars per week (dependent on if you have a partial share or full share) for ~20 weeks .  The produce is grown  organically and subject to weather conditions, etc.  Shares are distributed weekly and we got our first share today (freshlly harvested on Monday and Tuesday) which included broccoli, micro arugula, green onions, mushrooms, parsley, and a bag of spring mix (already triple rinsed with romaine, red leaf lettuce, tango lettuce, arugula, and mizuna).  Later we'll be getting fresh strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, squashes, beets, herbs, radishes, lettuces, cauliflower (and whatever else the farmer decides to grow). The families in the CSA group are all invited out to the farm next month to take a look at the crops, etc.  The farmer will also provide a couple of recipes each week based on what produce is available that week. I'm excited about our weekly bounty because it will force me to try some things I wouldn't normally buy/eat (like beets).

Wow...I don't, but sure wish I did! That sounds like a fantastic win-win situation for the farmer and the families! Unfortunately, if they were to do that in Calgary, we would be living off a very limited selection- short growing season. Although in the Vancouver area, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a program running- there was a experiment turned book a couple of years ago called the 100mile diet where they pretty much ate only what was grown/produced within 100 miles.

Further to that short growing season....it started snowing againg this afternoon. sigh....

Just checking in.... even though my bike ride yesterday was tough due to the wind, it was the right choice as today was even windier.   I got in a really nice run this morning - certainly wind assisted on the way back.   I was focusing on maintaining form and expected to run a slower pace. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my watch at the end and found my best 5k time so far this year.   It will be interesting to see if I can repeat that time in the next week or two.

FYI: I have trying to change my running style for about 9 months now - using Chi Running which Lyssa happened to reference a few weeks back.   Anybody else using Chi Running or some similar midfoot strike approach?

sounds like a great opportunity! I am going to see if they have something like that here! such a deal! and I love fresh veggies/fruits!

funny story about my daughter who once saw an icecream truck in front of our home...she came running and asked for a few dollars....a few moments later she came in and said she had to buy the entire box...he didnt sell singles! I went to the door to see what she was talking about and if this guy was trying to scam my poor 6 year old dd....and found it was a delivery truck for frozen foods...called schwans....big yellow truck with writing all over it...I could see why she thought it was an ice cream truck...we talked to the gentleman for a short time...took a menu from him and from that point forward we had a weekly delivery coming to us! great frozen food...they even had cookies pre made...just drop on the pan and bake! We still see the trucks around...and keep saying we need to contact them again! very reasonable and they deliver to your home! that is wonderful to me! I hate grocery shopping! so if you ever see a big pale yellow truck in your neighborhood and it says SCHWANNS On the side...stop them...you wont be sorry!

nice job on getting out there and running! smart of you to go up wind for the tail wind run home!

how is the new bike? did I miss the pictures of you on it? or do you still owe us those????

have a great day Dan..thanks for checking in!

Yeah, we've got a lot of pages don't we?

We laughed, we cried, we raced, we lived, we loved.

Hi all !  PHEW Lexi made it through her dance recital rehearsal ! PHEW, now we just have to get her through tomorrow night's BIG SHOW !! WOOHOO
She gets her hair done by my hairdresser tomorrow, I tried to roll her hair with my mom's help (she had not done that since I who am now 40 was in kindergarten) ! lol
Anyway, her curls fell out in no time......sigh...but tomorow night we are going to a pro ! lol
Anyway, today i got in an hour at teh pool complete with a 1.18 lap which for me is fast, and drills.
I am also working on an open turn, it's in stages so I must look rediculous ! lol
I go back tonight as well for the rubber ducky swim club which is normally an hour as well. they asked if I would lead it since they will all be gone..........oh right, that is like letting  a coo coo run the asylum.......SPELLING ?
anyway, I'll give it a go.
Oh, and "the stupid award for the day goes tooooo........ME" !!
I put lotion on my face this a.m and then could not figure out why my goggles would not seal !!!
Off to inspire my lovelies !
