Oh sure, hardee har har, make fun of bubble girl...

Newtons1st - 2010-04-02 11:26 AM Thanks, btw I also fixed your post.

Nicole83 - 2010-04-02 9:07 AM Todd, I remember when you told us all that you were doing a flying mount/dismount and I was completely impressed.  I fall over when clipping in/unclipping walking under normal circumstances, so that just made you even more of a stud.

Happy Friday everyone.  I hope you all have a great weekend and if you celebrate it, a very happy Easter.

Happy Monday everyone!

Hope all had a great weekend.  I spent most of it lounging by the pool and being lazy.   Just got done at the doc and I have clearance to resume light activity.  Yay!

I, however, am NOT allowed (and I quote) "any vigorous sexual activities for the next 2 weeks."  I asked him to define what was meant by "vigorous".  He looked at me like I had 2 heads.  I guess I'm supposed to still be so uncomfortable that I'm not thinking about sex.  Clearly, he doesn't know me very well, eh?

Anyway... Congrats on the great swim this weekend Eric!

Hope everyon'es week is off to a great start.

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.  Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).
And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Not yet but the day is young.  I can see me having this later today after I get my run out of the way but I am almost scared to try it.  And you didn't even see the pictures...

As a follow up to my shin splint question on the previous page....is this pain normally on the inside of the leg or outside?

As the day goes on it's hurting more...mostly when I limp around and less so when I'm sitting at my desk.  When I was at ART last week, I was told that there was a muscular inbalance throughout my left leg.  This also happens to the same leg with the shin pain.  So...I'm wondering if the shin pain is a result of this (although I've never once had any sort of shin pain) or if it could be a stress fracture.  Obviously no way to know unless I go to the doctor, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

I have no good advice, but a question.  Did they do something at ART that caused you to change your stride or something that could now be causing the shin pain?  It seems really odd that it would just start out of nowhere.

Hope you get some relief soon!

Great job this weekend Eric ....

If we're sharing recipes

We made bacon wrapped dates to go along with Easter dinner last night.

12 slices of bacon cut in half
12 whole dates cut in half lengthwise with the pit removed
24 toothpicks soaked in water

Heat oven to 450F

Wrap each date half in a half slice of bacon secure with toothpick. Bake at 450 for 15-20 minutes turning once half way through. Once crispy remove from the oven and drain on paper towel then serve with mustard.

I felt great when I left ART last week.  No change in my running.  Last Monday during my recovery run a felt a really, really dull soreness in the same shin.  But it was so faint (we're talking maybe a 2 on the pain scale) I didn't think anything of it, and once it stopped running I never felt it again and felt fine during the rest of my workouts last week.  It really did come out of nowhere....I can't remember tripping or stumbling or anything that might cause this.  On the pain scale I'm an 8, approaching a 9, and I'm freaking out bc I'm supposed to be running a half-marathon in less than 3 weeks.

I know you already know this, but get to a doc ASAP.

It's entirely possible you conked your shin and do'nt even remember it and the pain is there for no good reason, so try not to freak out.  But if it's a stress fracture better to know sooner than later so that it doesn't get worse.

Trust me, I'm the queen of stupid injuries.

Fingers crossed that it's just some wonky charlie horse on the front of your leg that gets better in a day or two!

So I did the whole ice bath Saturday after my run. I went a little harder in the last 2 miles since I actually stopped and checked on this lady who was running infornt of me and twisted her ankle. It was a little chilly on the ol twig and dinkle berrys but I actually felt pretty good the rest of the day. Walk around the Zoo and felt like I hadnt ran. This will be a ritual now.

And I agree with Kim.  Either GP if they are good about xrays and stuff right away or go to one of those emergency facilities with diagnostic equiptment.

Really sorry to hear about this, but it might not be as bad as the pain would suggest.  I would suggest looking for a sports medicine clinic.  They're often attached to university hospitals at larger schools.  Last time I had leg problems I went in and they fixed me right up (with PT.  And of course, the problem came back later, but that's not their fault. They diagnosed it correctly).

You might also be able to find a chiropractor's office that has a sports med bent.  They're kind of popular here in Colorado.

Thanks to everyone who gave recommendations for clip-on aerobars.  I couldn't decide between the T2 Cobra and Jammer GT, so I decided to go with whichever I could find cheap on Ebay.  Got a great deal on a brand new set of Carbon T2 Cobras.  Mounted them up yesterday morning and went for a ride.  It's AMAZING how different my bike feels.  Not only faster (especially in a headwind), but I was surprised to find that my lower back feels better when I'm on the bars.  I feel like I can relax and support my upper body with my bones instead of the muscles in my back.  I also noticed that having extra swing weight around the headtube makes my bike much less twitchy at high speed--a good thing, as it used to kind of freak me out a little bit above 35mph.  Now it's really solid feeling.  In all, a great purchase that I think will serve me well until my wife and I get settled with our house buying and selling and I can focus on finding a TT bike.

It's funny to think I was skeptical about the aero benefit of simply adding bars, because I see it every time I go skiing: if I'm with a friend going fast down a cat track (not turning), and one of us bends at the waist and tucks the poles, that person will very quickly pull away from the person standing upright.  I somehow didn't realize that aerobars on a bike would have such a similar effect.
