Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Boys are off to school today, including my youngest for his first day of kindergarten. I've got two options; Open a bottle of wine and sit on the couch feeling sad and lonely or go out and get a couple workouts in then start getting projects done. It's a tough choice! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JoePetto - 2012-09-04 8:17 AM chris2533 - 2012-09-03 8:27 PM Petto, I don't actually agree that it's normal to lose toenails. I've only lost one (big toe last January in a pair of Vibrams). It is pretty well known that this is due to your foot slamming into the front of your shoe, especially during downhill portions. If your shoes fit right, this shouldn't happen. I tend to agree, but the impacted toe (the one next to the big toe) is deformed in that the toe is longer than my big toe. No shoes are going to accomodate that and what I need to do (which I often forget) is to wear a protective sleeve. When I used to play tennis it was a big problem. A shoe 1/2 size bigger would accommodate that. I agree with Chris, that losing toenails is not normal. Unfortunately it has become acceptable in the community. Been running for a lot of years and have never lost a toenail. My running shoes are at least a half size bigger than my casual/dress shoes. The shoes that I am training in now for even longer ultra distances are a full size bigger to accommodate the increase in size of the foot over these longer distances. Your feet do lengthen and widen when you are putting in big mileage. You also may need to slightly change up your gate if this is a big problem for you. If it sounds like your feet are slapping the ground as you run, you are putting tons of additional stress on your toes/toenails. Try running lighter on your feet, up on the balls of your feet rather than striking the ground with your heels. |

Had a hard time keeping my HR at MAF due to heat and humidity, but still feels good to keep increasing mileage. Also got the beginning of nipple rash, so I guess its time to buy bodyglide. Can you use the Chamois Butt'r as lubricant or is the bodyglide better? Samy, I dont know about the Chamois but I use a little bodyglide and then bandaids on top. this has worked for me through numerous 16+ mile runs. I just wear a bra (Trying to keep up with funnyman Chris) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I came extraordinarily close to not doing my run today. I had a tough day at work at the end of a tough set of shifts, followed by going to see a friend and losing track of time. By the time I got home all I wanted to do was sit down on the sofa with a beer and my feet up. However, I couldn't face the idea of having to explain to you guys that I'd wussed out on day 4, so instead I got changed into my running gear and went out again. I'm really pleased I did that. Thanks everyone Mitch S 1/ B 3/ R 2 Rest 1 Total 6 Time 4:06:39 |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As of yesterday, I am back in the saddle again. I drove my wife and secretary crazy yesterday and they both demanded I leave work and go to the "LBS" and get my bike fixed. I ended up needing a new cassett, but hey I got an extra gear, which I'm sure will help me PR this weekend. This is my first HIM so long as I don't DNF, I think I've got it. I got home late and did 35 minutes on the drainer learning my new gears. Gabe S 1/ B 2/ R 3 Rest 1 Total 6 Time 9:15:52 |

I actually remember thinking "I already ran this morning" and back to sleep I went. No workout that day... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto et al. As I have mentioned before, in Nov I will be doing my first Oly distance (actually "International" Distance: 0.6/22/6.6). Up to now, my race nutrition on sprints have consisted on a gel 15 min before race time, few sips of Gatorade on the bike , and some water on the run. However, for the Nov race I would think I need to have in-race nutrition plan, but have no idea where to even begin. A gel every 45 minutes, Gatorade on the bike, and water on the run? Is there like a rule of thumb of calories intake per time or weight? I normally train in the early morning with a gel or a glass of OJ as my only food intake before going out, and have Gatorade on the bike (nothing on the run). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First Century ride done! 100.8 miles, 5:26:37. Strange thing is, I felt much worse around mile 40-50 than anywhere else on the ride. Lots of saddle discomfort, I bought some new Novarra gel insert bike shorts and just have not been comfortable in them. By the end I felt that another 12 miles would be no problem, and I even feel as though I could run a short bit right now. My pace worked out to almost what I'd like to do in Arizona, which is off the bike at 6:00 or just under, or 18.6 mph. Today's ride had very similar elevation gain, but really tough winds on the first half.
