ChrisM - 2013-03-29 2:17 PM You guys are really knowledgeable about watts and aero and whatnot. How many watts 'm I gonna save tomorrow???

Umm...hate to break it to you...but you're not going to save any watts doing that.

You really ought to work on tucking your thumb down.

ChrisM - 2013-03-29 6:45 PM Checked in. Bike prepped. Laying on the bed waiting for dinner. Weather looks perfect. Didn't buy anything for myself at the IM tent.

Good luck tomorrow Chris.

I didn't get anything at the IM store at Branson but I went to the online store a few weeks later and they had stuff marked down.  I got two visors for $5 each and a bike jersey for $35 something like that.  I got two IMKS 70.3 T-shirts for $5 each but it was a few months after the race.  Some races don't have much left afterwards though.

I would have to pay shipping and customs. My purchases are totally justified

Ok, I'm going to brag a little, but I also have a question for you gals out there

IMy question(s

2. For you ladies:  My GF is doing same diet as me but only 1200 calories per day and is running more this month than she usually does.  She is not losing any weight.  WTH is going on?  she is very fustrated.  Any help I could give her would be appreciated.

thanks

Congratulations on the weight loss. And you suck! LOL

Your girlfriend may need to eat more. Some people claim that our bodies can go into "starvation mode" if we don't give it enough. I am not sure I buy it, but she could try increasing, with good foods, 200 calories or so and see if she starts to see some movement.

Maybe she doesn't have much to lose. Does she have real weight to lose or just vanity pounds?

How tall is she? I am short (and old) so I also don't lose with running and 1200 calories. I have to add interval work to see any movement. I know it's supposed to be calories in and calories out, but it doesn't always seem that simple to me. Does she do any Crossfit?

Maybe she's cheating when no one is watching? (But don't accuse her of that.)

Rob, congrats on the weight loss and a few additional thoughts for the GF. Eating 1200 calories or less is pretty low. I really can't get there on a daily basis and it would not be enough for me. My maintenance needs (not including any exercise) is about 1600/day. I'm 52 and 5'10". My weight hovers at 130 lbs +/- 5.  Currently I eat very clean, but I've been 25 lbs heavier and understand the struggle. Most people actually eat more calories than they realize. From my personal experience, I had to count calories in a very disciplined fashion...at least for a while. The big miss for me was portion size and eating out. I've used and recommended a website:  myfitnesspal.com. They have a user friendly app for the phone which helps. It will also help your GF calculate her baseline needs and then adds calories for exercise. I still log my food occasionally when I'm trying to increase protein intake as their tool does a good job of breaking out carbs/fats/protein. Im sure there are other good tools, but that's one I've used successfully.

Thanks I will pass along the info.  We track our calories on livestrong.com and that has worked great.  Livestrong told us 1200 calories, but we can check and see what fitnesspal suggests.  She is 5'3" and weighs 110, she does run mileage, I'll suggest interval training as a way to jump start tihings. She just wants to tone things up.

Yes, eating out and potion size is a big concern, its unreal how many calories we blindly consume.  Through this process it has amazed me just how much I eat.  I really believed I had to eat that much to stay healthy, truth is I was eating way too much.

for reference I am 5" 3 and a half. I weighed 115 when i was 16 years old and was running ten miles every single day. I also had to watch what i ate. That was during my senior year in high school when i was running cross country. So she does or doesnt want to lose weight? 110 sounds pretty slim for an adult female...but i understand if she is just concerned about "tone."

Nicole Have fun swimming you will be doing a lot of it. You can include drills like vertical treading....holding medicine ball over your head while doing that, kickboard or streamline drills, poo iside pull ups ....etc you get the idea. This is to avoid an overuse injury of shoulders from ramping up your swimming yardage.

Heater was out on our pool so I am "vacationing" for a bit. Prolly go back Monday.

_Linda

I'm curious what any of you would have to say about the course. Getting some more perspective from other areas. Locally, this would be described as pretty hilly. I have mixed thoughts on it as the volume isn't huge, but they can be rather steep. The really sharp spikes are glitches, and I think everyone can pick them out. For the rest, many of them slow me down quite considerably on the bike (I ride through here at times too). Like down to 10-12 mph (maybe less) even if I step it up some. I have to put on a fairly serious assault to make 15.

ETA: Looks like the sharp spikes have been cleaned up since I first loaded. Everything looks real now.

That hill at the 1.2 mile mark looks pretty tough.  It's hard for me to stay in a good groove with hills like that which to me makes your run pretty darm impressive.  Low 6's, wow, nice work earning the hardware.

Yeah, none of them should necessarily be that hard, but they can really mess with your pace. Hopefully they get pictures up somewhat soon so I can put them in the race report. They had an Easter Bunny there posing with all awards winners.

And what a race all around at Oceanside! Thomas going after Boecherer and catching him. Potts just catching Thomas in the last quarter mile. Heather Jackson is turning into a monster on the run, on top of retaining her bike speed. Local (to me) Adam Zucco was 4th amateur off the bike. I age up to that bracket next year too, yikes!
