Also can any of you recommend a good book on bike maintenance?
You may find these helpful: http://sheldonbrown.com/repair/index.html http://www.parktool.com/repair/
The bikewebsite page has a "recommended books" link at the bottom of the page. Edited by dcon 2009-04-26 6:08 PM |

Saturday here was cold and rainy all day so I finally ended up heading into the health club - something I usually avoid on the weekends due to the crowds. It was actually not too bad and I got in a little time on an exercise bike, did some weights and then some swimming (just drills). The pool was a little more crowded than I like it, i.e., 4 swimmers per lane, but but the time I was done, it was down to 2 per lane. Sunday was rainy until 1pm and I went out for a run and soon as it cleared up - wise move as it started raining again around 5pm. I did a little over 5 miles wearing a new pair of Asics. I like the fit, but will withold judgement on the shoes until I log some more miles. I did spend over an hour trying on various shoes before going with the Asics Tarther - not sure if that model is available in the US, but I did have a pair about 10 years back here in Japan (fyi: my previous shoes were Asics 2010s which were good, but heavy). I hope everyone is getting better weather than I had. Have a great Sunday! Hey Dan..sorry your weather is not cooperating with your training..but as usual..I can see nothing can keep you from doing some training....good for you for going to the gym..and I for one dont see how you can share a lane with four! I am doing good to share with another...in fact many times I will get up and leave after someone gets into my lane...they may think I am rude..but I just am afraid of running into them..I guess more time in the pool will fix that! I hope anyways! we are actually having ok weather this weekend...windier then heck but no rain...but it looks to heading our way next week...I will probably be swimming and running...with that said...another bike ride today. Yesterday I thought of you while I was out riding with my husband...it was soooooo windy! a lot like your conditions you ride in...seems like no matter which way we turned it was a super strong headwind...I truly was exhausted when I got home....and many times on some of the downhills I felt as though I was getting whipped all about...sometimes I would feel my bike move sideways...and I wanted to yank on the brakes but knew this would only cause me to wreck...I now see why we did not see many other bikers out there! today is not as windy...and I am sure that we will go do the bay trail - which is windy even on calm days - haha...my dh hopefully will not head for the hills today, especially after all the complaining I did about all the hills/mtns we climbed yesterday! but I seem to need lots of cheese with my whine lately...in all my training! Can you send me some mojo! You seem to always go forward - always have a great outlook and never say never!...and I can use some of that attitude about now! have a great day and thanks for the update...always nice to hear from you. Hi Julie. Hope you got out for a great ride today in a wind-free zone. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to having the bicycle get moved by the wind. When that happens, I just freeze up and coast for a while. You may be able to get some mojo (and cheese) here: |

Pro 4343 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) We're having unseasonable hot temperatures on the east coast. I ran at 11am but it was already 88F; did my longest run ever. I spent the rest of the day in the AC keeping cool. Karen, I used to drive to start all of my rides because I wanted to start on quieter road. I now prefer to start most of my rides right from the house because it's so much easier than putting the rack on the car, drive to... I still drive to group rides, etc. |

Expert 1117 Shalimar, FL | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) Karen, I usually do drive somewhere to ride. I'm fortunate -- I can ride on the Eglin range. The roads are in good shape, long stretches without stop signs, and the few drivers that are out there are very aware of the bikers. So to me it is worth the drive. But I ride quite often after work, so I put my bike on my car and take it to work with me. Then I don't really feel like I'm driving somewhere to go bike, since I just stop on the way home. You could con yourself that way too! |

Trng is going ok- finally the temp is warming up here in south western Ontario so can get out on the bike. Just have been dealing with wind/wind and more wind ( I think like everyone else!!) It has been grueling- but we don't have any hills here- so the wind addd lots of resistance. Looks like we'll have to travel to find some rollers- going up and down the overpass just doesn't cut it!!! I recentlly changed a couple tires- both the front and back due to slow leaks. Now- I changed them not on the road- but in the comforts of the garage with my darling husband mentoring me. Did fine- mind you if was not during a race situation- and not laying on the side of a road- so... I think will need to practise this much more. As well- for you guys and gals who can change a back tire- gee what a messy/messy job! I had grease all over!! (perhaps my chain is too dirty- don't know- but what a mess!!) There must be some trick when pulling the chain off/down while pulling the wheel off!!?? Hope everyone is doign well -Helen

hey Helen...good to hear from you....glad you are getting some training in....when I used to live in Houston and had a mtn bike...I used to yearn for hills...so I would go to parking garages and ride up to the top a few times...not real scenic! as for changing the rear tire...it is messy. Make sure to clean your chain good every month or so...and then relube it! this will keep dirt and gunk build up. and just like riding a bike...once you have fixed a flat once or twice...you will never forget...the hardest part is getting the tire off the tube and getting it back on without pinching your tube. |

Julie...I can't stand the heat. I will often get up around 5 am to go for a run before work. As far as clothes...I like to wear shorts (tri/bike style without the chamois) or a run skirt and a tri style top or cycling jerseys (they both have lots of pockets in the back). For liquids...I use my fuel belt which you can also purchase add-ons for your phone, gels, etc. if the pocket is not large enough. A good site to go to is http://www.teamestrogen.com/. It will give you some ideas. maxmansmom - 2009-04-25 6:45 PM I started training in October. I can't believe I have only been training 6 months......HUH ? I thought it was more than that !! I use my phone in case someone needs me for any reason regarding my kiddo. Were it not for that I'd never have it with me. We have quite a few relatives around where I run, so in an emergency I can whip into a family home and call or get a ride. I carry a running water bottle with a thing that straps over my hand, I got it from one of the tri shops I think. I did not have any luck finding anything to run in at walmart (yep, that is our store here in town). I'll have to travel to look at running clothes. You gals rock ! Thank you for the ideas !!!!! |

We had rain in my area off and on all weekend. My son played two of his baseball games part time in the rain. Tonight the weather has been crazy, probably at least another couple of inches of rain since 5:30 pm at my house, with lots of thunder and lightening. I'm pretty sure Sugarland had some of the weather we had tonight as well. |

Hi Helen, Good on you for trying it! The side of the road isn't that much worse than the garage. The trick to back wheels is manipulating the chain by the derailleur. You can actually just give the wheel a sharp whack at the point opposite the notches in the frame and it should pop right out (make sure the brakes are released first). Then, to put it back on, just crank the derailleur down away from the frame, catch a sprocket of your cassette on the chain and slip the skewer ends into the notches. I like to keep the bike upright the whole time and work with gravity on my side! My husband solo-changed his first tube and tire today and I couldn't be prouder. He's had a flat tire on his bike almost since he got it. The more you do it, the easier it is! Trish |

STAY SAFE Lisa! How is your area? much flooding? the North side seems to have taken a beating...and I-10 near you seems to be bad too! hoping your home is not in any danger of flooding! hoping you are staying home and not going to work....bet the bayous are full! I used to live behind braes bayou in Meyerland area and there were only a few times in the 15 years we lived there that it overflowed...we actually had a few people rowing canoes down our streets on those occasions...luckily it never reached our home...but it sure was close a few times! hope you have good weather...sending some of our sunshine your way! Extreme Veteran 624 Spring TX | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) We've had absolutely terrible weather over the last 24 hours. I live about 25 miles north of Houston and we've had about 10 inches of rain. My sister lives on the west side of Houston and had people canoeing down her street this morning. A lot of schools cancelled, but not our district. My friend from work lives about 7 miles further north of me and it took her 5 HOURS to get into work this AM as her bus got stuck on one of the HOV lanes which was flooded going into town. It took me about 1 1/2 hours. It's mostly sunny right now and very muggy, but still lots of street flooding. They've been talking so much on the news about the weather today that I haven't even heard what it's supposed to be like the next couple of days. Hard to get very motivated in this kind of weather, so opted to cook a good dinner. |

I did not pay yet as I am looking at a gym around the corner...and want to make sure I am not going to join it first! also, things are about to get really hectic for me with work...so I will not be around as much.. have a good week/weekend. |
