50’ gorgeous run in the soup of humidity that is southern Illinois today. Just one of those runs that felt good and give you confidence.

Nice!

Nice Brwim tonight 28k bike 2k run and 400 m swim. Perfect weather at the moment over here.

Been watching the olympics (well, it’ in the background in the office, so mostly listening while I work)

Triathlon tomorrow…. Maybe, or duathlon. What a joke! How on earth could they think swimming in the Seine was a good idea!!

Yeah, the whole triathlon in the river Siene is a mess! Disappointing that they'd have to consider changing it to a duathlon (no disrespect to those who enjoy duathlons).

Epic fail and hubris by the Paris committee and the IOC.  SMH

I can't believe they didn't plan for a backup location, though I'll bet the "numbers" come in just OK for swimming so everyone will get sick just like the OWS'ers did in London 2012.

ETA:  if I actually swam as much as I've watched swimming since Saturday I might actually be good at it

Snappy run on the treadmill this morning with 3 x 1'15" pace and 2 x 30" @ 6:45 pace with some walk/E pace recoveries...almost 4 miles total with WU/CD.  Preceded by a bike warm up and followed by some strength and planks.

I still don't have my running "flow" back but it's getting there.

Oh, and welcome to the Midwest: tornados! We went to the basement after the sirens went off and it went a couple miles south of us. That was close! (We watched it come in the front porch until the sirens went off)

Well, they are swimming (barf!). The women's race is over, lots of crashes on the bike. Winner wrapped it up in 1h54:55.

Only 55 minutes better than my best oly from last year, the last one just 40 minutes faster rather slow

Men are off in a few minutes

Ya gotta get up earlier here, Gretchen.  I've actually loved having the swimming finals on from 2:30 - 3:30 EDT - I take a break from work and watch a couple of races, then back to late afternoon meetings.

As for swimming in the Siene - agree with Nat, barf...maybe literally.  I guess athletes figure "hell, it won't affect me for a couple of days and I'll be done racing by then".

Robert - That dessert sounds phenomenal. Send some our way, please!
And stay safe from those tornadoes! Sounds scary (but also pretty cool that you could watch it come for a little)

Nat - Glad to hear you have your confidence back! Ruts can be tough to get out of of, but crushing a run is definitely a solid way to do it!

Mike - what got you out of your running flow? Just taking a break after the last tri? I bet you get that back pretty quick

Gretchen - I feel you on the soupy humidity. I just got done with a run in the same. Love all the confidence coming through this forum this week!

Me - Played a few vball games Monday night before the sky opened up and drowned us. I had just left to meet up with some friends for the Os game. I was walking, as one does...ended up under a tree in torrential rain and thunder/lighting. Had to call a Lyft or risk being completely sopping wet by the time I got there. Otherwise was a nice night! We never made it to the game, but watched it (once the rain delay ended) and the Olympics at a bar and chatted.

Nothing yesterday b/c my grass league was cancelled. Just got done with PT and my second run since injury. I did 25 minutes total, mostly running 2 min/walking 1. Felt my hip a little but so far not in pain. Will continue to gauge that as the day goes, though I did have a "I'm just gonna do the surgery" moment.

what? were you not up watching before embarking on a 50 miles run? Oh no, it's taper week isn't it, you are probably not up until 4 am.

Sorry, I didn't say who won though so no spoilers really

Regarding the dessert, I can try to obtain the recipe as a consolation prize if you'd like.

15 mile ride today. Kind of meh. Trails were super mushy after the rain and hail last night. And my engine was just not going hard today.

Also, terrible selfie at mile 12 on my ride...since Mike and Nat posted one, I figured, why not show off Nebraska trails a bit?

Robert...I'm ashamed of you!! What kind of Midwesterner are you?!?!?! You don't go to the basement until the porch furniture starts flying!! Those sirens are just to let you know that the good stuff is happening outside!!

In all seriousness, I had a friend whose 80+yo dad and uncle (also 80+) watched a tornado from the front porch so long they had to dive down the basement stairs and barely hit the bottom before the tornado took the dad's house. THAT'S how we do tornados in the Midwest!

I slept until 4:45am, thank you very much! :P Just before I went to the pool and swam a monster 4550yds. And yes, that extra 50yds was intentional. I had the choice of stopping at the TP prescribed distance (4450yds), or a nice even number (4500yds) or double the master's workout (4550yds). So...obviously...I did the biggest set! :D Taper be damned!

Felt amazing and again, super confidence boosting. Started to wonder while I was showering just how far I could swim...like, without a goal in mind, just swim until I couldn't any more. Maybe that is something to think about for September...marathon swim session until my arms fall off and I have to get someone else to retrieve them from the bottom of the pool. Would take some thinking though, as our pool is only open for shortish chunks throughout the day (6-9:30; 11:00-2:; 4-8p). I wonder if I could just hire the lifeguards privately for the 90' between the morning sessions. I doubt my capacities would extend to more than 8 hours of straight swimming, so maybe not have to worry about the afternoon break. Guess I could always go to the lake too, but that isn't as controlled and much more likely to be a shorter distance because I just, quite frankly, don't like ows that much.

OMG well that's incredibly embarrassing!! That's what I get for trying post rapidly after a bike ride...I am so sorry about that!!

@Gretchen - if it wasn't for our 9 year old freaking out in the basement, I absolutely would have stayed outside. I have been in 3 different tornados, and I'm still always amazed at the sheer power.

Ugh...folks...I just had to buy a new saddle. I was watching our "pet" groundhogs eat carrots and I happened to notice that the cover of my saddle was separating at the base on both sides. I examined it a bit to see if I could fix it with some super glue, but one of the sides is worn through. The other side is ripped, which may have happened during my last race, as my bike got blown off the rack in transition (the winds were terrible that day!). Either way...I've ordered it and now I just have to pray I can get it here in time. Fortunately, I only had to order the top (it is a bisaddle), so hopefully I'll be able to install it without taking the rails off the bike (preserving position!).

The only thing I'd rather change out less right now is my running shoes.

1) Biggest set? Sounds about right...
2) Y'all...I think it's time we start seriously discussing getting Gretchen some help...I think she's officially lost her mind!
3) J/K, it's all coming together! Don't stress about the big seat, it will work out fine! Good to catch it before the race rather than the morning of and then be thinking about it the whole time (IMO)

Nothing to be embarrassed about! We had to go and make it complicated by having names that start the same (somewhat uncommon) letter! And you're still *somewhat* new here, so that's always a good excuse.

@Midwesterners:  I want ZERO parts of any tornadoes; you enjoy!

@Gretchen:  what's your longest day in the pool ever?  I got to 5300 SCM back in 2015 while my wacko Masters group was doing 100 x 100.  My daughter did 7500 - that's good week for me!

@Nicole:  I basically didn't run for about eight years - end of 2014 to maybe the beginning of 2022 - maybe 100 miles a year in between and that was mostly light jogging trying to get it back.  Before my back injury running was just so fluid for me and I really could figure out pacing by feel, now I have to focus on my form and I'm just swagging at pace.  I'll get there - probably another couple hundred miles needed.

Today was swim morning, bike lunch while watching women's tri - wow that current!  During my swim I somehow skipped an interval...I was doing so well on my 100 repeats I guess I was so busy patting myself on the back I neglected a 100 pull interval.  Oh well, 2600 instead of 2700, and I was able to hold sub-1:40 pacing for 8 out of the 11 freestyle 100 intervals, so happy.  Lunch bike was Z2 and low Z3 (snooze).

Fun workout with the running club tonight.

30 seconds jog, 20 seconds threshold and 10 seconds sprint 5 times in a row, followed by 2 minutes rest.

Repeat 4 times.

Much harder than I thought but fun!

Longest I have ever done in the pool was a 2500. I'd be curious what we all could get up to, legitimately. Gretchen would beat us all, obviously, but it would be fun to see!

Looks alike my longest swim ever was last year’s MiTi, which was 4608yds. The buoys blew out of position over night and the sun was blinking everyone on one side of the lake, so sighting was a bit tough. It did not feel as good as this morning did! For the pool, today was my longest day.
