Artemis - 2008-04-16 7:06 PM Hey Judi, nurse/medicine question for you: where does gallbladder pain usually happen? I'm having pain in the bottom my ribs on the right side (more towards the middle). Does that sound consistent?
Right upper quadrant of the belly, just about rib cage is right. The old incision for gall bladder was about 6 inches (or more) just below the lower ribs. Now they can do most gall bladder surgery through a laparoscope (those itty bitty incisions Kristen mentioned). Do you have any pain after eating higher fat content foods? That usually goes along with the gall bladder. The little ditty they taught us in school was "fair, fat, 40, female, fertile" cause most women with gall bladder problems were light skinned, heavy , usually in their 40's or recently post partum...Okay, you aren't fat, 40 or post partum so that throws most of the little ditty out!

I always have problems eating fatty foods and greasy foods.  I get really sick when that happens - sometimes just sick after eating in general.  They basically said if the lidocaine doesn't make the pain go away, I have to go for a gall bladder scan and ultrasound.  Right now, it looks like that's going to happen.

Plus, I used to be heavier.  I've lost about 15 pounds this year, so I hear that can be problematic.

Sounds like it needs to be investigated.  Ultrasound doesn't require any IV sticks at least!  Not sure about the HIDA scan if that gets ordered because it isn''t one we did often from the ER.  U/S does require a fasting state though...

Hiya Nibbs!

I went to OWS practice in the river again today.  It was about 5 degrees warmer than over the weekend.  It went a lot better for me today.  I'm doing a 4 week camp, so hopefully by the end of the 4 weeks I will be a lot more comfortable.

If anything, you might become imune to the cold.

I do WAY better with fasting than needle sticks.

Not sure if I'll be doing the other scan or not.  He definitely said ultrasound and he said maybe a gall bladder scan.  We'll see how it goes.

Hi Cat!!

I think it will work out ok.  The lidocaine is helping a bit with the hypersensitivity problem I was having, but not with the bulk of the abdominal pain.

Are you doing any better?

Good morning, Nibbs.

I have a fun, big training day with beautiful weather for once. I'm going to the chiro first. Hoping to get my IT bands loosened up so I can do my big ol' brick. Won't be aaround much today because of the 70 mile ride/4mile run then I have to teach a lifeguard class tonight. Happy Thursday!

Afternoon, Nibbs!

Good news...something good is happening for me at work...

Bad news...it means I missed my afternoon workout slot so I could make the most of the good thing...

Hoping to get something, anything, in while the Monkeys are in lessons.

OK - so here's the deal...I have to write articles to get published in law reviews/journals as part of my job. Getting them published is a tough process - you send them out to a bunch of reviews and hope that someone picks you. But...that isn't the end of the process - you also have to try to get the best-possible placement. So once one journal or review picks you, you have to contact all of the ones higher on the list to ask them to consider your article in the next week or so before the other offer expires. And then maybe one of them will give you an offer, so you recontact all the ones above the new one and play the same game.

It's absolutely horrible and feels completely distasteful, but it is part of the game that we have to play - so I do it. Unfortunately, this spring, I wasn't getting too many good nibbles, so I couldn't even play the silly game asking higher-ranked journals to read it quickly, so I had to wait. Well, yesterday I finally got a good offer, so now I'm playing the game... I spent yesterday afternoon sending e-mails to all of the journals above the one I got an offer at. Time-consuming, but at least I'm making more progress than having no offers.

Well, that's probably just confusing, but oh well.

Aha! Post-partum is what did it for me...(well, and being fair, fat & female too!)

Mine was a severe pain in the belly, like Judi described) and also a very severe back ache went with it. I had a few attacks shortly after I had Elder Monkey, visited ER once (they said panic attack - idiots). Then I started peeing brown/orange (yeah, TMI). Went to primary care, they asked me a bunch of questions and sent me for CT/ultrasound for gall stones. Consult with surgeon - she says, let's see for a few weeks because I'm going on vacation. 3 days later, full blown attack & they schedule me for a few days after that. In at the crack of stupid, and out (because I'm bully and had a nursing baby at home) by bedtime.

Congrats on the offer Kristen...that's pretty wild...

So...who decides why one journal is 'above' another journal in status...is it purely a numbers game (distribution/readership?)?

Good luck wid all dat...

Morning Nibbs!!

I hate cleaning up after messy people.  Especially when you point out that certain things in the lab need to be done before the safety inspection and they don't actually get done.  We have one person in our lab who is so miserable.  She never wants to do anything.  Drives me crazy...

I am # 91 on the postings list.

I am 40 posts away from Elite.

I am a messy person...so Jen would not like to work with me.

I am waiting for my e-mail to ding with offers/rejections from other journals.

I am listening to my iTunes. It just went from BNL "What a Good Boy" to "Maria's Wedding" by Black 47"...mmmm.

I am trying to write my exams.

I hate writing exams.

I hate grading exams more.

No, not really...but people would look at me funny if I said I liked it.

All the info is good, but making me kind of scared.  I've had pain in my back that I attributed to kidneys, but it's too high for my kidneys.  Doctor told me to give him a call today or tomorrow, so I am definitely going to do that.

It's not that I don't like working with messy people.  I'm pretty messy, too.

This person can't get the needles in the sharps box.  Or broken glass in the glass box.  And this is in common use areas.  I don't want to get a needle stick because she's too lazy to figure out how to get a needle all the way in the box.  Really, not that hard.

Plus, this sort of being messy can hurt other people.  Not good!
