muppetdog - 2009-08-29 4:57 PM We're at our 2nd home in Scottsdale. I'll probably head down about 3 weeks before the race and do the taper down there.

Sounds rough.  How ever will you manage?

Good news! I drove on McKelleps Road yesterday, and it's AWESOME! This is an almost 3 mile stretch of road that you have to do 6 times in the 3 IMAZ bike loops. This stretch of road has always been complete crap!  A few weeks ago they started prepping the road for repaving, but they have finished now and it's beautiful black asphalt!  Even though it's only a small stretch, it was the kind of road that makes you dread having to ride it, especially when tired and sore, and having to ride over it for the 5th, 6th time.  I know for me knowing that this crappy bit of road is now repaved just makes the bike course seem a little bit easier.

Anyone in South OC (Irvine) training for IMAZ?
82 more days, butterflies in my stomach every time I think about it!

My totals so far since March:

600+ miles on bike
200+ miles running
100+ miles swimming

How is everyone else's totals?

August's totals:
Bike:29h 59m 50s  - 501.79 Mi
Run:14h 32m 27s  - 100.55 Mi
Swim:11h 44m 43s  - 33750 Yd

I think the bike ramp up from 350 to 500 miles in one month has given me some knee issues so I'm going to reduce this for September and then try to get to 600 for the October peak.

I'm also beginning to appreciate all the injuries people deal with when increasing training volume. Being new to endurance sports I'm not used to encountering these, but have learned all about ITBS, patella tendonitis, planar fasciitis and more. I'm used to just having tired muscles not tendon and joint issues. Really tough to stand down from a set training schedule when you feel your muscles can still go on but having other pains. At some point I guess you just have to realize that maybe you aren't ready for the 'competitive' or 'advanced' plan.

Toddg, I hear you on the the increase training volume and injuries!I have had 2 reconstructive ACL surgeries on both knees, sometimes I can't tell if the pain is caused from the past surgeries or from overtraining? or even both? Its incredible how much time and sweat over the course of a year it takes for this ONE day event!

I think that's going to be one of the new chapters in Gordo's 'Going Long volume 3'. It's an advanced technique though that can leave you injury prone.

Between the 5 kids, wife and 45 hours of OT this month I squeezed in the training. At this point I am satisfied with whatever training I can get it. It will be a bit tougher with the kids back at school cuz my 14 year old is kind enough to watch the kids on some of my training days. With him gone I will have to take the younger ones or find someone to watch them. Ought to be fun...

August's totals:
Bike: 24h 42m 32s - 442.28 Mi
Run: 11h 03m 13s - 71.35 Mi
Swim: 4h 28m 37s - 11728.21 M
