Does anyone know when the practice swim is?

Thanks.

I think last year they were Friday and Saturday mornings.

Speaking of the swim....  Does the current really aid in the times with it is with you?  I have heard it doesn't.

From the race reports, it looked like the current was noticeable during some of the practice swims but not during the race.....so it looks like it depends on the day.

My understanding is that there is a lock up river that controls the flow.  Most times it's not much of a current at all.

I loved the Augusta 70.3 current!!!  You could just float!  I've kind of heard the same thing though - very little effect either way.  Did anyone see Spinervals has added 50 miles of the Louisville course to their collection?  Since I don't have a CT, I think I might have to check it out.

Jeepguy2358 - 2010-03-15 4:11 PM I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am jealous of everyone starting their plans.  My 20 weeks begin April 12.  Once week 3 rolls around I am going on vacation for a week, which means no biking.  Going to the BVI, I should get in some pretty good OWS though.  I think I am going to try to make that my rest week.

How is everyone's base right now?  Are you feeling pretty good about it?  What are your max sbr distances leading up to beginning your plan?

I am trying to overcome some achilles tendinitis, so my running is at a minimum, but I have gotten in a few 50 mile rides and some 2-3k meter swims.

seems like a bunch of you are up to high volumes already!

I'm starting IM training on April 19th (BT Intermediate 20 wk plan). My base is adequate right now, but need to crank it up just a little to get me to a HIM on May 2nd.

Max distances so far this year:

Bike: 50 miles
Run: 15 miles
Swim: 2000m (yeah, i know

The Spinervals DVD is great!  This is my first DVD for the trainer and I was a little weary, but they do a great job of describing the course, hills, suggested tempo, etc.  It also makes the time go by MUCH faster.  I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a quality indoor ride and you're tired of looking at a fan the whole time!

My real Iron training starts this week, but so far my longest sets have been 3500 swim, 45 bike and 13 run. I guess it only gets harder from here, huh? Plus my new cycling shoes came in this weekend, and I made my hotel reservation. I cant believe this is only 5 months away.

Lets work hard people, we have to show Louisville what BT is all about!

POSSIBLE HELPFUL INSIGHT ON THE SWIM AS RELATED TO CURRENT...
The current was not noticible during the event...HOWEVER, my time and Louisville was very similar to my swim time at Wisconsin.  The difference was I had a wetsuit at Wisconsin but not at Louisville.  Therefore, I am concluding the current was a factor, just not one that was physically noticable.

Man, I feel so far behind with regards to running.  I battled AT last spring and it decided to make another appearence this year.  It's driving me crazy!!  I am now up to running 5 at an easy pace and feel pretty good after.  It's hard to go so slow while increasing my mileage.

Umm...shouldn't your 20 week program start on 4/12, not 4/19....for an 8/29 race?

I'm also starting my "20 week" plan on April 19th.  Unfortunately tax season takes precedence over the first two weeks of Iron training, but then work is done and the fun will begin!  I'm registered for a 1/2 marathon on 4/25 and a 2 day 210 mile ride on 5/8 to get the blood flowing.

I started base training on Jan 4th but was focused on the marathon I ran on Feb 28th.  I've just made up my own plan based on what I could handle from previous seasons and what I've read in Be Iron Fit, Going Long, the Tri Training Bible, BT Plans, and Forums.  I've also got a friend that's training for his first IM and we are Co-Self-Coaching each other.

It's going great though.  My plan focuses on frequency, total distance, and "long" distance each week in each discipline.

Longest Run: 26.2 on Feb 28th (a 56 minute PR!)
Longest Bike: 63 last weekend (150 total for the week)
Longest Swim: 2900

I started base training on Jan 4th too, and just raced a half this weekend (7 minute PR!).  This week is a light recovery week, and then I am really in IM training.  My longest swim is 1800, bike 50, and run 15.  I am doing the Kansas half in June, and looking forward to that race!

Hey all-

I hope I'm not bringing up a dead topic, but what will you all / have you worn for the swim as far as speedsuits go?  Have you worn them?  Were they an advantage over, say, a tight fitting tri suit and shaved legs?

I ask because I did IM Wisconsin last year with a full wetsuit and I noticed a HUGE difference over just swimming in my tri suit.  What do you think the % of people will be at IM Kentucky wearing speedsuits?  FWIW I swam a 1:13 at IM Wisconsin, so i'm in the middle-ish area.

I was minutes away from getting the Xterra Velocity 0.02 on the Xterra website (http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/products/mens/speedsuits/)  as its only $99 down from $250 before I read some discussions in other forums debunking the actual effectiveness of a speedsuit.

Is it mostly mental?  Something fun to get?  Really worth it?

Don't know how effective it is, but count me in.  I'm wearing one.  (Xterra).

Drag is huge in the water.

There is no way around it, so you are smart to think about what you wear for the swim.  If you are planning on changing after the swim into bike shorts you have a lot of options.  If not, the tri suit needs to be tight or wear a skin suit.

I can't figure out if all the skin suits are roughly the same, or if there is a big difference between each one.

oversight, i had it marked on my calendar and just put the wrong date! thanks.

as far as the river swim, even though we may not feel a current, it's a river. rivers flow...there will be some current. maybe not as much as you'd like, but there will be some flow.

Has anyone been able to find out if the ride course will be the same this year as last year? I recall that they had to alter the ride course a bit due to some construction on a bridge.

I have not heard that the course is changed/different. Based on maps I have seen, it appears to have not changed.

I was told yesterday that I need to make sure I bring plenty of tubes and spare tires for the event, that people in the town like to throw tacks on the road. Is this for real??

I heard Bill tell you that.  Seriously, there was a section on the course last year where someone put down tacks.  I saw it in some race reports.  That is downright evil.

My coach had two flats last year as a result of the tacks. Be prepared!

I just wrapped up the LA Marathon, so my focus is now Louisville.  Run base is pretty awesome (just got my BQ), but haven't been on the bike or in the pool since IMAZ last November.  I'm doing the BT 20wk intermediate plan, so I'll throw in some pool time and hopefully a bike or two before I officially start up.

I have some options for hotels/vacation rentals but haven't locked anything down and haven't booked a flight yet.
