Wetsuits - arms or no.  Anyone know what the temp usually is? I have a full but hate the feeling of being in Naked Gun and a full body condom.  Would love to get away with sleeveless.  Also wondering about over heating.  Experiences please? Many thanks.

It's a good bet that it will be in the low-to-mid 70's so you should be fine with a sleeveless. If I remember correctly it was well into the 80's within 3-4 weeks of raceday, last year. The late August/early September cool nights took the temp down to 72-74??? by the day of the race.

Excellent.  I'm sure I'm not the only one.  I rented a jon for a Masters open water swim here in July last year and I was very glad I did.  Water was pushing 78.  Plenty of buoyancy and stayed cool.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-07 6:57 PM A full sleeve wetsuit is generally faster. The only drawback would be the over-heating aspect.

The nicer wetsuits have panels on the arms to allow for a better catch.

Nothing wrong with sleeveless and I think RStocks uses one (he is a FFOP swimmer), just talking in generalities.

I've always liked the sleeveless, I feel restricted in a full sleeve. I will admit that I haven't tried any of the latest, greatest full sleeve suits though. I have an Orca P-Flex sleeveless that I really like. I've worn it in temps as low as 61 and as high as 78 (that was really more like 81 in 98% of the lake).

For Lake Manona the sleeveless will be great.

I've never done IM Moo, but I did do B2B back in 2009.  That race is in early Nov and the water is pretty darn cold.  Folks wear neoprene caps and booties for example.  I wore my sleaveless wetsuit and I was fine.  The cold more bothered my face.

Basically, I'd just wear what you like or have already.

In 2007 the Lake Manona water temp was 75 and in 2009 the temp was 76 for the race. I would expect pretty close to that.

I did B2B in 2008 and froze my butt off before the race in the 40 degree air temp. The water temp was 64 and it felt like bathwater when we finally started. The sleeveless was a perfect suit for that temp ....... for me.

Sounds like I will be investing.  Thanks for the input.  I was really hoping I could do without the sleeves.  Temp management and I just feel better without the restriction.  Thanks for all the great advice.

Just letting you peeps know that 212 days from now it will NOT be -12 deg. F, as it is today.

I bet that makes you feel a little bit better.

Yeah but it could be over 90 deg. F and that makes me feel scared Cry

I'll take the cold over the heat any day of the week.

Certainly would make an interesting swim in 33 deg. F water.

Just a little FYI, I did the 2010 race and the water temp of Lake Monona was 67 degrees, so basically be prepared for anything, its the midwest, cool one day, blazing the next, really affects the water temps. I wore a sleeveless and was fine...

Has anyone ever done run training on an elliptical? My knee has been giving me a lot of trouble lately, especially with the high impact nature of running, even more so on hard packed uneven snow and frozen trails. Running on the elliptical feels so unnatural to me because it's a much shorter stride, and is almost like a pedaling motion as opposed to a run stride. It still hurts to run on the elliptical, but not nearly as bad, and I think that is what I will do to let my knee heal. Anyone have moderate success training on an elliptical or am I wasting my time?

It's only February with over 7 months to go.  Why not take 2-4 weeks off of running entirely and try to get the knee healed up entirely.  Sounds like the eliptical still hurts.  Doesn't make since to continue to damage the knee for less gain.  How about a swim focus month?

Edited to add:  This is from Mndiver, not his awesome wife Lumpy.

I guess I probably could do that, but I was having great success with my run training and really enjoying the improvements I was seeing, and am reluctant to give that up. I will probably get an MRI the next time I go home (college student) to see what the issue is and where I need to go from there. Good advice no doubt, it's just a little hard for me to swallow at the moment. I could use a swim focus month in all honesty anyway. Thanks

I have used one in the past because of a knee issue.  It's fine, but you really need to wear a HRM to make sure you are working out at the right level.  I would be sweating pretty good because the gym was warm, but my HR was solidly in zone 1.

What did I learn from the above?  My knee hurt because I was going too fast and running too many miles for my fitness.  It took me a couple years to figure that simple fact out.  Yeah, I'm stubborn and stupid!   Anyway, here is what I would suggest:

  1. Take a week or 3 off from running.  Your run fitness will only aid you on race day if you can use it.  The most important thing in IM training is to become as fit as you can without injury.
  2. Start logging your running.  BT is a great place and it's free.
  3. Run 3 miles at a time 3 times a week for the first two weeks.  Run nice and easy.  Top of zone 1/bottom of zone 2.
  4. Then run 3 miles at a time 5 times a week at the same easy pace.
  5. Slowly add some miles to those runs, but keep the pace under control for all but one run a week.

Knee issue?  IT band?  Mine was and is.  Still dealing with it 4 months later.  Running well now but must do yoga and rollers religiously.  At first, no running for a 6 weeks.  Swam lots (saw great strides in the pool.  Made good use of the time.) Biked. But no running.  Then the doc freed me and I started to ramp up.  Up to an hour hard workouts on the treadmill.  But still feel the tightness at times.  Roll, roll....

Thanks for the advice Doug. I was following a marathon training plan from active which was in line with my fitness pretty well, so I don't think it is a fitness problem, but as for now I have broken from my plan to give my knee a rest. We are still 7 months out so I'm not too concerned about taking a break from running for a bit. I may continue using the elliptical until spring if the doc suggests it, and I'm really going to focus on my swimming during that period. I should be back on track by the time the snow melts and I can get back outside and enjoy the weather :-

Iceman I'm glad to hear that your knee problem is healing. I'm not sure what my problem is yet as I haven't been to the doctor. I was just going to rest it for like a week to see if that cleared it up but no luck. It could be ITBS, or possibly a bone contusion or my meniscus. I'm going to see the doctor pretty soon, and see what he says. Hoping for the best.

Good luck with training everyone! Stay healthy, were below the 7 month mark.

Ihbomb,

In November, I tore my achilles partially.  I did not know this at the time, but I would run on it, then it would be sore for a few days so I laid off.  Then it would feel better and then I would run and the cycle continued.  I went to a PT but it still did not get better.  It was not until some of my training buddies who are PT"s told me to get my doctor to get  me a MRI and then I learned that I was prolonging a serious issue.

I have now been in a boot for 4 weeks now, and have strict orders to not run or eliptical or even walk.  But, if you look at my training log, you will see me running.  How?  I went to a Doc in downtown Chicago with a group that does all the work on the Hawks, Bears, Da Bulls and the Sox (dont know where the Cubs go) and he understood my training challenge and my races.  He has me on the bike, swimming, lifting and core, and then this water running.  I hate it, but it is a phenomenal workout and my water running coach tells me that most of her motivated students come off of this and do PR"s because they keep it up after and it puts less stress on the body.  I look at your picture and you look way young, so you dont understand.  But for me at 50, this is one workout a week that Ill do intervals with .  Then last, next week, they will take me off of the boot and put me on this machine  http://www.alter-g.com/functional-rehabilitation   I tried it and it is crazy.  The guy who was running on it before me had knee problems and he was in a brace.  He took the brace off and they had him running at 7 min miles with no pain at 40% off of his body weight.    Moral of the story, listen to your body and get some good medical care and coaching by people who care about your sport.
