Or starting for the first time ever? I'm anxious and excited all at the same time. First session is in the pool tomorrow. According to plan it is roughly a 45m session with a 10 min warm up, 30 minutes of continuous swimming and 5 minute cool down. Wish me luck!! Me! Me! I am re-starting Masters swim this Tuesday evening after a year off - ok maybe six months. I am hoping I dont drown during practice this week, wondering if I remember how to swim, and pray that it is not too embarrasing. Oh, agony agony! Ugh. |

Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! Happy New Year everyone! Thanks so much for the inspires - they definitely do what they are intended to do! I love them! For the next couple of weeks my plan is to start marathon training, enjoy spinning (as I always do) and drag my butt to the pool (can you tell that it's my least favorite?) I think one goal will be to swim crawl for entire swim portion of my June tri. When I did the super sprint I hadn't trained much (especially in the swim department) and I got freaked out and did breaststroke the entire way. Other goals: cross the marathon finish line, cross the line for my first tri and then improve my time for the second. By the end of the season I would like to have run 10k in less than 50 minutes. Happy training everyone! |

Also, does anyone have any opinions of look pedals v. speedplay? of course! i always have an opinion! both are clodhoppers for having the cleat stick out of your shoe, but speedplay even more so--it is a really big cleat! however, i adored the 'float' on speedplays--so unbelievably comfortable since your feet aren't locked into position although it can take some getting used to and you don't want a sloppy pedal stroke. also if you want a wider platform speedplay is the way to go. you can get some really cheap LOOKs but there aren't any cheap speedplays |

I currently use an older set of Look pedals. I don't like how much float they have and was considering upgrading to a new model that had the no float cleat (the black cleat I think). I had also thought of the speedplay due to the two sided entry. If they have more float than the Look I guess that gives me my answer. THANKS! |

Most LOOKs you can still adjust. Two sided entry is nice but honestly if you've already been using one-sided it doesn't make a difference ... you just press on the pedal to flip it up and voila you're in on the right side. |

funny lynn ... you just made me think back to the 'poor poor' days seriously manatees, and lynn remembers this, i was so poor and still did triathlon but there were definite benefits even to that and I just thought of another because I got so many hand-me-downs, inheritances, samples, tester-gifts of triathlon gear ... i've gotten to try out an amazing range of stuff that, and I know how to do triathlon cheap-cheap-cheap |

Veteran 126 Phoenix | Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! Happy Happy New Years Manatees! :D Just got caught up on pages 14-16 - whew! I wasn't online much over the New Year weekend. So, one of my New Year's Goals was to schedule 6 workout days a week, and actually complete 4 of them. I completed 3 last week - so just shy of the goal. But I consider THIS week to be the full first week of 2011 - so last week didn't count. HA! Question: Can I do my first sprint triathlon on a mountain bike? I don't have a road or tri bike, and don't really have the $$ to get one either. So, just wondering if it's like totally forbidden, and people will throw rotten fruits and veggies at me if I show up with a mountain bike? I can't believe my first tri is only 2.5 months away - freaking.out.here. But SO excited too! Thanks everyone for your inspires! The mentor group and the training logs are great accountability tools - since you know you have people tracking your progress and cheering you on, you are less likely to give up! Wishing everyone a great week! |

Wishing everyone a great week! Mountain bikes are perfectly acceptable. When I did my first tri last spring, I saw many people using mountain bikes. Heh, some of them were going pretty fast too... never underestimate the power of the engine. I use (still do) my 1997 specialized road bike. Works pretty well. Had the hubby put some aero bars on it over the summer and I felt all fancy like. Yanti needs to resurrect a picture of her with the bike she used at her first triathlon. I think it had a nifty horn on it!! |

There's absolutely no problem competing on a mountain bike and you certainly won't be alone; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the large number of mountain bikers on the day. As regards rotten fruit and veg, I'd recommend getting a basket full of rotten tomatoes attached to the front of your bike and pelting the crowd as you cycle by before they've got the chance to pelt you. It's all part of the fun on the day! Niall Edited by Galwegian 2011-01-03 12:24 PM |

Niall hahaha! i was actually going to mention a basket ... yes ... mtb is just fine as everyone said. you might want to put slicks (not knobby) tires on it for ease, but you'll be fine no matter what. i have seen every kind of bike at triathlons, and yes, with baskets. Mine did indeed have a turtle honky horn, although now my mtb has a Nemo horn. i will resurrect the picture and my very first race report ... also, I podiumed several times with that beater bike, so ... it really is the engine. |

Wishing everyone a great week! A ton of people do thier first race that way. Finishing your first race is the accomplishment, no one really cares how you do it. I saw an article a few months ago about a guy who did a full IM on a BMX bike wearing cargo shorts. He wanted to make the point that you don't need the fanciest stuff to race, just the heart to work hard. |

Member 27 Abilene | Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! Can anyone provide insight into the graph on my training log of planned vs. actual?? I understand what it is, but I don't understand why it looks the way it does when I inputed my data for todays workouts. Makes me look really bad!! I didn't do all that was planned, but it makes it look like I did a 1/4 of what was planned. Strange. On another note, it felt great to be back in the water today. I did my strength training before swimming and once I was in the pool, quickly discovered that I didn't eat enough for breakfast this morning. I was faint and dizzy, which has never happened to me in the pool before. I cut my session short after 1000m. The only think I can think of was not eating enough calories this morning... Has anyone else experienced this? |
