If I stay in my 'Comfort Zone' ...well, then that's where I stay.  I don't grow or go anywhere.  My 'Comfort Zone' is the size of a tiny room.  In this room I am stagnant.  I am complacent.  It's easy to stay in this room.  Dammit, it's comfortable!!  But the world awaits me... and the world is everything outside that little room.  Discipline is the sledgehammer that will knock down these self-imposed walls of complacent miserable comfort and free me.

"Come to the edge," he said. "No, we will fall," they replied. They came to the edge. He pushed them . . . and they flew.
--Apollinaire

Bust out of that box and Fly!!!...Fly Like an Eagle!!

Bobby, Thanks for the pep talk.  Good luck in finding your discipline this month.  For me, our race isn't raced on race day, it is EVERYTHING we do up until race day (for the most part).  What we do now has a direct impact on how our race day will be.  That's what motivates me to keep on going.

kimmax - 2011-02-07 6:37 PMOne of my favourite books is "In to the Wild".  The title of my blog actually comes from the book.  It's jam packed with quotes that really made me think about the choices I make in life.  For a long time I was very afraid to try new things.  Fear can be suffrocating but I think when you fear something - it means you are meant to do it.  Step out of your comfort zone.  Or as Andrew Carnegie would say, "If you want to conquer fear, don't sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy."

"In to the Wild"...Haven't read the book, but LOVED that movie.  It definitely made you think.  I agree with you, FACE YOUR FEARS....THAT is how we grow.

I think the discussion about training and discipline is a very interesting one. It will come up again and again as we all move throughout our training/race season. I will state up front that I could be more disciplined. However, I am pretty sure that I never want to walk such a narrow line that I do not have some flexibility in my training plan or in life in general. I have stated previously that I loosely follow my training plan. Like others, I am busy with various aspects of my life and this will often cause me to shift things around with my training plan. I am okay with this. I refuse to beat myself up everytime I move something around or miss a training session. I know that when push comes to shove that I will run first, bike second and swim last. I try to switch this around from time to time, but this does not always happen. For me, I train because I enjoy training and the lifestyle. I train so that I can race, because I love to race. I train regularly because it makes me feel good about myself and it sets a good example for others. I cannot do any of this if it is going to make me miserable on a regular basis. That would pretty much defeat the purpose. So, if it was going to be 55 degrees here tomorrow and I had a long swim scheduled, I guess I would start searching for my running shoes, AND I would be totally okay with this. I would try to arrange my schedule to get my swim in later in the week. As I sit here and watch the snow pile up outside, I know that I will get to the pool eventually, however, to be outside running in 55 degree weather would be awfully nice to me. I know people that are very, very rigid with their training. I do not want to be that person. I am not a pro, and I am not finishing in the top 3 of my age group. For me, I want to train as best I can and enjoy it. I then want to race as best I can and be satisfied with the results. Sure I want to improve, but I do not want to spend the better part of a year in a dark place because I did not nail my 45 minute intervale session on any given day. Life is too short!

Nice point, lately I have been very tired at night, but am still training.  It is tough but I continue to push forward, sure I want to sit on the couch with my PJs on and watch TV, but....off on the bike or swim I go.  It is a trade off.  I wouldn't say I am in a dark place but it definitely isn't easy and requires lots of....DISCIPLINE!  :-)

The concept of a "B" race, much less a "C" race, completely escapes me.

For me a B or C race doesn't mean it isn't important...it means it isn't AS important. Smile
Last year I wanted to run a marathon on Halloween, it wasn't my A race and because I had plantar fasciitis I passed on it.  If it was an A race I may have taped my foot really well and gone for it...even if  I had to walk half of it.   In a non-A race I will certainly go all out and do my best, but I didn't train all year to do it, like I am IM CDA.  They are more optional races or stepping stone races....for me at least.

Most all the workouts are named to honor our fallen service men & women. Giving tribute to those who have given all for us makes motivation come a little easier to me.

Sorry for the long post! I am finding a passion for this lifestyle – hope to share!

Nice write up John!  You definitely are passionate about Crossfit!  I think most people on the BT site, like myself, use triathlon training to stay and shape and be consistent, but you have Crossfit to do that for you.  It is great to see that you are very passionate and excited about something that is healthy and fun!!

With that said, I know you want to do an Olympic race, which we are all all exited to see you do and complete.  I am wondering if you are going to supplement your Crossfit training with some swims, bike rides and maybe even some brick workouts?

I do plan on doing more tri specific training. My OLY is the end of Aug & I am planning on using either a 16 or 20 week plan from BT. I think that has me starting sometime in April-May. I also am doing an Xterra Off Road Sprint in June. My plan back in January had me starting a plan in February for the sprint. For now, I have decided to stick more with the CrossFit for the sprint though I will get some swimming and biking done before then - probably starting in March or April.

First - I have done a couple of sprints and know that I can suffer thru them. I did one with virtually no training and completed it though I suffered alot. I know with the CrossFit I am already in much better shape now than when I did the no training sprint. So pepper some additional biking and swimming in with the CrossFit and I think I will have a much better performance on this sprint.

Second - My thought is that with 3-4 months of CrossFit behind me before I start the OLY plan will give me a pretty good base on which to build. Additionally, previously for me - after 1-2 months I have tended to stumble on any training I have done & have always lost my motivation to continue though I have completed those sprints even 2 months later and no additional training. My thought is that I tend to be such a loner when swim/bike/running that after that month or so I get so bored that I lose interest. I am hoping with the comraderie of the CrossFit & the different challenges it offers I can maintain that interest over a long enough period to make things so habitual that my body craves the training enough that I will stick with things.

BS? Maybe. I found this site and started training for TRI's a little over 5 yrs ago - just before turning 40. I made big plans to get in the best shape of my life. I planned on making the 2nd half of my life about taking care of the body I had abused for the 1st half. Each year I have started a new plan with new goals. Each year basically repeated the previous years plan and results. Each year ....I fizzeled (sp?) I have to try something new.

Even though I have started each year with excitement over newly set ambitions, no year has held the lust for me that this one has so far. The only real difference? CrossFit.

I hope that won't exclude me from playing here? Smile

"What I have learned is the variety of the workouts and the group I have found keep me looking forward to each and every workout."

"Vanity, fear, peer pressure….call it what you want – it works to keep me focused on pushing myself to the limit."

"According to CrossFit, their training helps endurance athletes expand their aerobic capacities while building their muscles to help them muscle thru longer distances."

"So I guess the goal at this point for me is just to build consistency…a habit…a lifestyle."

"I am finding a passion for this lifestyle – hope to share!"

John, AWESOME POST!!!  I went onto you tube and searched "Crossfit" .... my body hurts just watching the videos!!  I picked out some of my favorite sentiments from your post.

As Mike pointed out, there are triathlon philosophies that incorporate strength first and then introduce endurance.  I personally am starting to believe, there are many philosophies that work for this sport (there are many ways to skin a cat, right )  but the key is to 'stick with' one philosophy, AND find one that you 'believe in'. It certainly seems the case here with you, John.  My prediction is that is you use the strenght, stamina, coordination and range of motion skills you learned in crossfit, and apply them to the specific repeated technique training of SBR, you will be graduation from BOP'er to MOP'er in a hurry!!

Thanks for sharing your insight with us!!  Good stuff

John, I think this is of PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE.  I recently read an article where three-time Kona Champ Peter Reid admits his training went to another level when he took on Tim DeBoom as a training partner.  After the two split, Reid said his training suffered.  Despite the Macca/ Crowie rilvary -- the two still train together!!  I follow a lot of pro's and amateurs on twitter and in blogs, and one thing I've noticed is that almost everyone trains in group or with a partner.  I've also noticed, since joining a Triathlon Team, that training with a group brings out the best in everyone.

Despite what many people think, Triathlon is NOT an individual/ loner sport.  You have the support of all the people (family and friends), there's volunteers and crowds at races, and leading up to the races You Should Be Training With Other Triathletes!!  I highly encourage you to find a training partner or a Triathlon Team to join.  What tends to happen, is disciplines you are stronger in, you tend to help bring a partner or teammate closer to your level; and disicplines someone else is stronger in, they help you.  The social aspect (just like you are finding in crossfit) also helps keep you emtionally vested and all-aorund committed.

I think if you find like-minded triathlon training partners to meet on the weekends, I think that will be the biggest key for you to unlock a full season of consistency and success.

Here are a couple of links to good articles on CF & Tri's

http://triathlon.competitor.com/2011/01/training/go-inside-one-triathletes-venture-into-crossfit-endurance_18648

http://www.crossfitendurance.com/faq/

Be sure to check out the testimonial page on CrossFitEndurance site -the second link -here is one testimonial -

"This past weekend I competed in the Ford Ironman in Florida. I trained 7 to 8 hours a week which is unheard of for doing a Ironman rather than the usual hours and hours (15-20 hours a week) of LSD training. This was my fourth Ironman, but first which committed to using CrossFit Training.
I was over an hour faster than my last Ironman with a time of 10 hours 53 minutes. And, felt stronger as the day went on. Running a 3:51 marathon and never doing more than 10 miles in training.
With a family and business this is a perfect training program! Quality training and recovery.
So basically, Crossfit works! High intensity, less time= progress. I would recommend it for anyone from elite athlete to someone looking to ramp up their fitness program.
Thanks Crossfit!"

Despite what many people think, Triathlon is NOT an individual/ loner sport

Ironically - I think this belief is what first attracted me to triathlon. Maybe not as much the thought that the sport itself was an individual sport but more that "I" was the loner and this sport gave me the vehicle to maintain my solitude while providing a healthier lifestyle.

I have grown out of that shell now and realize how short sighted that view was - while it is true a fair amount of time is spent alone in the sport, the support, encouragement and positive atmosphere in general when dealing with any aspect of this sport - be it competitors, organizers, support groups or others -  means rarely are you ever alone.

Wow, missed alot of good stuff here the last few days while i've been under the weather.

Great explanation John about the benefits of Crossfit, love the exercise descriptions in your logs. It'll be cool to see how it translates into your season.

How's everyone's weekend going? Still not feeling great but I dragged my lazy butt out today for a run. Gonna have a tough week coming up with work travel, sure I won't get any sympathy from Mike though Smile.

Just get up early at the hotel and slog your way through a treadmill workout.  Don't forget your core work (I tend to finish this up in my room as 1) there usually isn't much room in the workout facilities at the hotels I stay, and 2) the 6'3" guy doing Pilates at 6:00 a.m. looks kinda silly Smile).  Good luck and we'll be checking your logs!!!!!!

If it works for you, do it. There is no magic bullet out there. You need to find what works best for you. As DC will tell you, you are an experiment of one. If CrossFit keeps you in good shape, and then a little tri training allows you to pursue your goals, get after it. One size does not fit all! I find swim, bike and run training fun. It works for me. Others I know ski all winter long and then use that fitness come spring time to start tri training. To each their own.

Hi Everyone!  So the countdown is on for me to visit hubby abroad.  He's confirmed there is no bike in the hotel gym so looks as though I'll be missing some pretty high volume weeks eek!  I've been sucking at working out.   I've got oodles of excuses too LOL  The whole jury summons thing threw a wrench in to my plans but I was DISMISSED today and so will be departing soon.  Mad rush here to pack and prepare so I'm basically giving in to the pressure and have cleared my workout schedule.  I am packing my runners and hoping to get back to running while away.  It's a great way to see new places and I haven't had a run since the Christmas holidays!  Then I'll be back at it when I'm back in Canada.  Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!  Train safe!

Dozen days left in the month.  Man February flies by.  I cannot wait until my two road races next month.  Aside from pacing my friend at Philly, next month will be 5 months without a race!!!! Argggghhhh!!!

I miss that week before the Race.  The Countdown!  Then 'Race Morning!!'  The butterflies, nerves, seeing friends, .... anyone else miss that kind of stuff right about now?

I'm just happy getting outdoors to get some workouts in right now.

I love races...all kinds of 'em.  I actually really like the low-key, fundraiser 5Ks where you only have like 100 people in the race total and you can get in and out of there in an hour.  Oh, and you can win your age group.

The week before races is crazy (did I train enough?  am I tapering right? what do I eat/not eat?  will one more speed workout make me faster race day?).  I hardly slept at all before my triathlon last year.

First 10K is in April, though my training plan wants me to race a 5K mid-March.

New avatar.  Yay   Yeah, I love local races.  There was once an inagural 5k race in eastern Long Island, in mid-January, 59 runners showed up.  Gun goes off, and I'm in 1st.  We turn the corner... and I'm still in first following some guy on a mountain bike.  I actually kept first until about 2 1/2 miles and I GOT PASSED!!!  Then another dude passed me.  Needless to say, I will probably NEVER AGAIN LEAD A RACE, and I finished with a 20:59.  A 20:59 is a great 5k time, but any REAL EVENT that's not getting me cloooose to 3rd overal!!!  God Bless the local race

I am equally affected leading up to a race but I wish it were only a week.  I couldn't sleep very well for a week after signing up for my IM last year.  I was still a year out and was basically freaking out over what I had committed to and how I was going to train etc.  After time I was fine, but it definetly ramps back up leading into a race.  Taper seems to make everything worse.  But all this worrying helps to raise questions on how you will execute your race.

For those who are just starting their Tri journey it is a great idea to havevisualized the event in your mind prior to the event.  Meaning go into your Tri with a plan on your nutrition, pacing, effort, etc.  Also practice your transitions prior to the event, it will make life much easier than trying to learn on the fly.

Each one of these would be great topics to discuss as we move forward:

- Nutrition/hydration

- Pacing

- Transition

- Execution

Many more but a great starting point.

Yes, very, very much. There is nothing like race morning! Seems like a long ways off, but before you know it, you will be in mirror lake with 2,500 of your friends. It will feel like your heart is trying to jump through your wetsuit (for you a very new and fast suit). And then, canon, total chaos, and you have started your day. For me, there is only one moment that is better than the start of that race. I get emotional just thinking about racing on that morning. Seems very far away though, eh? Think again! Now what were you saying about not wanting to ride the trainer.

Absolutely. Nutrition alone is a huge issue. There are so many products on the market. You ask 10 different racers their nutrition plan in training and in competition and you get 8 different answers. You also get comments like...my nutrition plan worked great in training, but....

Good topics to explore for tri peeps at any level.
