Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! I tend to need to follow a plan for running or I slack off. (See Nov and Dec.) I swim about 1000 yards at lunchtime and I have no problem making my own workouts. I haven't decided on biking. I've done Jorge's workouts for several weeks and I've done without as well. |

I thought the exact same thing when I read your post. Perhaps a silver level training plan might make you even happier because they often give you very specific things to do during each workout? I know I grew a bit bored with the basic plans here but love the direction of the silver level plans.lounav - 2011-12-31 8:46 PM hoffsquared - 2011-12-31 4:00 PM Happy New Year!!!Question for the group --- are there others who don't follow a training plan? I find I don't like to follow them.. Anyone else wing it? Up until this point I have loved following a training plan. I like numbers/charts/grafts and am a little OCD, so training plans fall nicely into that. I also didn't know what I was doing, so a training plan helped feel like having training wheels or arm floaties. But, as much as I love them, I'm thinking a lot about just winging it in the months before my first tri of the season. It just sounds fun right now. Who knows! After all those reasons you like plans...you've now decided to ditch them and go willy nilly???? Are you drunk??? hahah LMAO I think a plan is what you need....based on all those reasons......PUT DOWN THE BOTTLE GIRL......ENOUGH!!! I'm the same. I could barely even make sense of the basic plans with their minutes only stuff and no details - I like details - probably who most of my stories end up going nowhere - I forget to think about the big picture, lol - but once I got the gold membership (don't use the gold custom plans because they come up with seriously low mileage for everything and won't let me use a bike speed of less than 8mph - hence the goal) as my transplant anniversary present off Marmadaddy I could get pretty much everything Ok off to find the transplant to tri thread that got me gold |

Looks like the gold was more of a birthday present I(August 15) than transplant anniversary (6 november) though - that's what my sprint tri is looking to celebrate - 17 years since the transplant I've also got a very very long term goal of being the longest living transplant survivor - hence the serious health kick (still need to work out nutrition, etc but I'll get there this year once I get some decent resource material and can essentially teach myself what to eat and how to cook though.) Anyway the longest transplant survivor til now has been 31 years - which means I have to stay alive til 2026 - I'll only be 42 by then though so I'm hoping to push it a lot further, lol. |

Expert 1007 Missouri | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! hildekq - 2012-01-01 4:05 PM Congrats on the 7 miler Tammy!! For you noobs, Tammy has been fighting nerve pain in her feet for years! She tried drs., orthotics, steroid shots between the toes, drinking till she passed out and even having another kid, but all was for naught... she ended up having surgery to kill the nerve back in October and is just now getting her mileage back up. So for her to be able to run pain-free for 7 miles is STUPENDOUS!!!!!!!!!!! I think I will try the MARSHMALLOW plan.... soft and cushy, never too hard! Tammy - congrats on the run! Hilde - I did the marshmallow plan for several years after I started running (very easy run/walk 3 days a week, couch potato the other 4 days). Could never figure out why I wasn't getting better or faster. I still have marshmallow weeks here and there, but finally realized that consistency is the key if I expect to see any kind of improvement. It's worked for the running, now I just need to apply it to the bike and swim! |

I was on the trainer today, as I'm not quite up to doing one-leg spins out on the road. Just ordered a Garmin foot pod and bike sensor since I have a forerunner now. I'm going to sell my Cateye Astral 8 bike computer (has cadence), so if any MMM'er needs a bike computer, let me know, you'll get first shot. Still need to get a new bottle cage (or 2) and some warmer gloves for riding outside, but my next ride isn't till Wednesday, so I'll be good.

Wow, what a cool set of posts to catch up on-- all the birthdays, bike porn, and inspiring transplant stories were *exactly* what I needed to read today: it's my first day of the training plan (my first time following a strict training plan, by the way), and it's a rest day, so I'm a bit jittery... but I'm sure I'll be hugely grateful for Mondays soon enough! (And yes, I *entirely* agree with the well-established fact that red on bikes makes you go faster-- both my bikes are some variation of red, black, and white! ) Back at it tomorrow-- see you all then! Nice bike! I'd be interested in the bike computer. I've been trying to decide between a bike computer and just getting a cadence sensor for my Garmin (I have the 305). |

Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Gnome - nice bike. How exactly does the bike computer measure your cadence? I bought one from a local department store along with some lights and it wouldn't work on mine - it had this magnet thing that is meant to go on the spokes of the wheel and every time you knocked it even slightly (and that was just me trying to attach the wires to go to the display section while it was stationary in my front yard) it would come off. Have fun with the new gear shopping.

Alex Glad we could help Alex. I could never quite understand why training plans start with a rest day though. If I'm starting something I wanna get out there and do it. But then again a lot of the higher order ones are probably designed for people who've just finished one thing and want to work to the next level. Good luck with the plan though - don't be too strict with it if you have to swap things around sometimes for life or health reasons though. They can be flexible.

Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Swim today went great - details in the log - 300m including warm up, main (basically what it says in my swim plan) and cool down drills. Looking forward to the next one on Thursday. Also signing up to a 5 day long intensive clinic for next week tomorrow and will hopefully be furthering that with actual lessons afterward once I get some work hours. OH and most importantly - it was not crowded today. And my breathing went great except for a coughing fit towards the end of the 2nd free lap because I'd swallowed water, lol. |

The computer has 2 sensors, one that goes on a crank arm, the other that goes on a wheel spoke. The wheel spoke things should be magnetic, and most of the ones I've seen have a little screw thing that will help hold it on. The sensor for the crank arm is held on with a zip tie. |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Just had to share my new arrival... she was waiting for me when I got home today... my first "real" wetsuit! I started out with a cheapie Farmer John style that I got on clearance because it had a fingernail hole in it, then got another cheapie FS from Team in Training that is very constricting. So, I picked up a groupon for Trisports.com and went wetsuit shopping. Here she is: I feel like a REAL triathlete now! I just hope it's easier to get out of when it's wet. I got into it reasonably well, but when it came time to take it off, a suction had formed between my calves and the suit, and I had to call for a wetsuit stripper (my husband)! It took both of us a good 5 minutes to extract my feet! |

And I'm with you on getting the thing off.... mine always gets stuck on one heel, I almost have to sit down on the ground to get it off, which is why I'm just as fast without it. It has to be a longer swim and COLD water for me to consider it, but I'm glad I have it. Not sure what the trick is to get it off, it's hard enough getting it ON, and I can't zip it up myself. And I agree with Tammy, Jen, a 45 cm bike just HAS to be called CUTE, ha ha! Suzie, great work on the swim and whoo hoo on the clinic, that sounds like tons of fun and just the thing to get you going... is it a swim clinic or a tri clinic? Oh, and the crank arm is the long piece of metal or whatever that your pedal is on that connects to the bike, one on each side. (I'm sure Wilson can think of a much more imaginative description of CRANK arm, ha ha!). For my cadence sensor, I have a small magnet ziptied near the bottom of my crank on the left side. And there SHOULD be a screw for the magnet that attaches to the spoke. |

And there SHOULD be a screw for the magnet that attaches to the spoke. Idea for the wetsuit thing - if it is the zip that's causing an issue go to a local habadashery store and get some ribbon then tie it on to the zip handle. That way you can pull up the zip by yourself. That's what I use on my swimsuit which has a zip back. As to the clinic - it's just a swim one. Oh and I had a feeling that was what the crank thing was. As to the screws - there may have been - I got it as part of a lights set and there were a whole bunch of screws. Only thing I could properly work out how to put on was the front head light thing and even that isn't on properly - it's too loose and has spun around so it's facing me. Anyway the guy at the LBS said to bring it in (I need to get him to swap over the pedals since I couldn't even work out the crank size when I went to the department store) and he'll see what can be done about both that and the bottle cage. I may take it on the train and see a not so local shop though because it sort of seems too professional there for me. I don't even know what half the stuff is for, etc. |

Great to see new bikes, a new wetsuit, new training plans, a great 7 mile run, extended swims, planned clinics, etc! I guess I do have a training plan of sorts...bike commuting is essential training component and is every weekday (I am very lucky in this respect). Weekday workouts are 30-40 minutes. Monday - swim Tuesday - run - speedwork Wednesday - strength Thursday - run Friday - swim Saturday - long run or at least 1 hour bike Sunday - the opposite of Saturday Distances will become longer as HIM approaches. Days off will just happen due to 'stuff' or I will sense getting tired and take a day or more off --- so I don't have planned days off. I see some folks run in Vibrams. Anybody else. I tried the Merrell Pace Glove but got injured. Likely by increasing mileage in them too fast. Happened twice. Calf injuries. Now I just use them as my workout shoes. I hesitate to try again. Have a great day everyone! |
