Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() My first tri is tomorrow. Super sprint. 150 pool SW/6 mile bike, 2 mile run. Only bad thing is the cold front coming through I will love it for the run not for the bike. The swim is inside. Also is about .25 miles from the pool exit to the transition area. Goal is 50 minutes and have fun. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all you triathletes in training. I just found out Steve started another group and I am super stoked to join in on the fun and conversation. My name is Samantha and I am in season two of triathlons. Last year I did my first sprint and olympic. Had a blast! The olympic was exactly the challenge I needed. I am not fast, but that is not why I am out there. I do this simply for the spiritual and physical discipline. I believe Jesus has called me to steward my body and my training is me living that out. I love it and the group Steve led last year had a significant impact on my success, so I am excited to be a part of it and offer what I have to the rest of the group. I am 35. Single without children, which means I look at all you parents and kick myself whenever I believe I am too busy or too tired to get my workouts in. So thanks for your inspiration as you faithfully get it all in. Carol and Cheryl - it is great to see you both again! I would love it if I could find out the first names of each member of the group. Last year someone compiled a list of everyone's BT name and real name. It was helpful. Has anyone done that yet? My plans for this year: 25 mile bike next weekend. Bloomsday (7.45 mi run) in Spokane, Wa. I plan to do a HIM distance race in August if I have my training up to speed by the end of June; if not, I will do CDA Tri (olympic). I also plan to do a couple 1 mile organized swims. Maybe a sprint tri. Then a marathon in October. My big goal is IM 2013 in CDA next year. Been dreaming of completing and IM since 2005 and am excited that the time has come where I have all I need to get there. So today I did a 4 mile run. I am struggling with very tight and sore calf muscles, but I got it done. Though it isn't far I am always excited when I get my workouts in on days when I would rather quit. So thankful to be part of a group again! Hope the guy doing his first race this weekend had a blast! Look forward to getting to know all of you! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Samantha! Glad to have you back. You will notice a familiar face or two. Stretch, foam roll and ice those calves, get in a warmup walk before starting your runs, be careful of hills until the calves settle down and do not do too much intensity on bike or run. Steady base building for now. Frank enjoy! Edited by Baowolf 2012-04-22 1:17 AM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck Frank! Welcome Samantha! The first 5k of the season went well yesterday. I felt strong the first two miles. The first mile finished 10:05 whiched seemed slow since I ran steady over the entire down hill but I started BOP and got caught in a early crowd which probably explained the time. The second mile was still a bit down hill, or level and ran 10:10 so very comparable to training times. What goes down must go up and the hills got me. Finished strong with a 34:55. A friend said this is a tough course but I will need to add base and start some hills. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job on the 5K, Joe! Definitely tough when they end with an uphill mile. Samantha, hello!!!!! (waving crazily) So very good to see you and glad you are tri-ing again this season. I can so identify with not setting the bigger goal until the training and/or smaller goals are in hand. Still wavering on whether I want to sign up for a HIM this yr. Overslept the lake running group this morning, so off for a run around the hood before church. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Samantha! I did a HIM in Spokane a few years ago and it was awesome! Troika! Great swim, flat bike and run but really hot during run! Good luck with your training! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks All! Steve- Thanks for the info. I have never had my calves act up like this and didn't know what I should do. I want to talk about what it looks like to build my steady base and include the races I plan to run this year. I know about the 10%/week rule. I know the high, low and med. intensity workouts/week. How do I start thinking of that long term and long distance? I am using a training program put out for people training for bloomsday and it definitely includes hill work, which is probably when my calves went from normal to painful. Happy day to all our racers! Carol- I look forward to another season spent with you on my team. Your a great encourager! Samantha |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did my long bike ride this morning and it sucked. I am slow to begin with, but the 35 degree temperature and 20 mile per hour winds made it worse. By the time I was done, my was sore, my feet were numb, and I could barely feel my fingers. The only positive I can say from the 35 mile ride was that I finished. I love Ohio weather. Who knows, it'll probably be 95 and humid tomorrow. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I really need to get on my computer more! I usually ck messages via iPhone and prefer responding on the computer- easier to type. Im staying connected w you all but just not communicating as often as I'd like. So#1 welcome Samantha!#2. Did someone say "wetsuit strippers???!!". I had no idea! Seriously. #3. Steve: in HIM BT swim training it will sometimes say (for example)swim 200 KICK 200 PULL 200. What exactly is kick & pull? Ive been using a kick board in front- arms outstretched. Pull I've been using a pull bouy concentrating on arms. Am I doing what I'm supposed to be doing? #4 new Tri suit should be here tomorrow! Eek #5 excited to hear about Franks Tri!#6 had a fab workout yesterday! Brick:26 mi @ 15mpm ( fastest I've ever ridden)How sad ha?! Lol and almost two mile run. It was 95 degrees here and was smart enough to get it all done by 830 am! Yay me!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe, sounds like a good race. So to go faster for father... you need to get in more weekly miles. Doing some hills will help, but this gives you a solid pace to compare for your training runs. Doing some half mile repeats at a 9:00 to 9:30 pace will do wonders for ya once you get those weekly miles up over 30 miles per week for 2-3 months. Yes, Kick is kick with a kickboard or snorkle without using your arms and pull is pull bouy not using your legs. The main thing about wetsuit strippers is that you want your wetsuit below your waiste before they yank your wetsuit off ya or the stripper part can be more than you really wanted it to be. So right after you are out of the water you want to unzip your suit, then work your arms out and just as you get to the strippers you get it below your butt, roll back onto your back to clear the wetsuit and they yank it off and you roll back up grab your suit and off you go. Don't worry about the bike speed, just get in the miles for now, pleanty of time for doing speedwork later. Speed comes slowly on the bike. Morning run before church 8:40, 7:55, 8:02, 7:55, 8:05, 8:01, 8:00, 7:46, 7:22, can not complain with those times. Definately a shorter run, but real happy with the times, legs almost back to normal. Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here is my race report on the website.Total time 46:21 .. much better than the 50 I was aiming for. My run time was better my other times were right on. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=436410 Long story short, it was cold which had me worried, but I place 2nd in my age group (40-44). I got a plaque and a $25 gift card.. I don't care how few people in the race, been doing events for 10 years, first time that I stood on the podium. I will take it. I feel like a lot of training paid off today. Woo Hoo!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Frank- Excellent job on placing second. You are right to now care how many people are there. Its how many people aren't doing it that makes you stand out! So I decided I would do what someone did last year that really helped me out. Here is a list of profile names associated with real names. If it only helps me it was worth is, but hopefully it will help y'all too. Enjoyed catching up on all the convo. Lots to glean from some peeps who really know what they are doing in the different disciplines. Headed out for a bike today. Calves feel better, but I will stay slow and steady hoping to do 15 miles or more. the sun in finally shining and no rain so I can get outside on my bike. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Way to go Frank, a 2nd is a 2nd grats. And coming in faster than your planned time is a bonus. Thanks for putting the list together, I always have to check for folks names on their personal info and some didn't put a fist name there. It looks like we have some folks out there that I would like to check in. Say what you did today, post a question, let us know you are still checkin in with the forum. Pleanty to learn for everyone including me. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Frank - Great job anyway you look at it. That is an accomplishment you can share for many years to come. Steve - thanks for the tips. I know I'd be happy with those to times of yours and be able to run 9 miles. Larry - crazy weather this year. Way to hang in there! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Slow bike today. 1st one outside and I am always shocked at the difference between indoor and outdoor biking and running. I run faster outside and I bike slower outside. Oh well. I am reading a good article about speedwork and just training in general. Thought y'all might want to check it out. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Training/General_Training/Speedwork_Is_it_time_yet__811.html I am encouraged by the reminder that just getting out there is worth every minute even when it is not my best. It all leads to greater success in the long run. Steve - I am thinking about a HIM training plan. The ones I have looked at are for a greater length of time than I have before August. Any suggestions? If I continue building my base by finding a good training plan, based on my logged workouts and getting swimming back into my training, is HIM in early August achievable? Jim- you did Troika? That is the race I want to do in August. So it is a good course? What about for a a slow first timer? Samantha |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, Troika was great and honestly the only big problem I had was it was brutal hot during the run. The swim was in a beautiful calm lake, the bike was very flat and fast and the run was also very flat just hot! You'll do great! |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha there is a beginner HIM plan on BT and a build your own if you have a paid subscription. First you have to decide how many workouts of each kind you want to do. Your base is relatively... thin at the moment. So your long runs will look like 5, 6, 7, 5, 8, 9, 6, 10, 11, 7, 12, 13, 8, 14, 15, 12, 8 race. Your long bike will look like 20, 30, 35, 25, 40, 45, 30, 50, 55, 35, 60, 65, 40, 70, 30, race. Your long swim will look like 500, 750, 1000, 1300, 800, 1600, 1900, 1200, 2200, 2500, 1600, 2800, 3100, 1800, 3200, 3200, 1800, 1400, race. Or something like that. You can max your run at 14 miles your bike at 55 miles and your swim at 3000 yards, but longer is better if you have time. The shorter your long the more walking you will do and the slower your pace. You can complete a 7-8 hour HIM on the lower milage though. Take a look at some plans and see what fits. You really won't be doing much of any speed work as you need to x 4 your long run, x 3-4 your bike and recreate your swim. It should take you 15 to 20 weeks to get there, longer is always nice but 15-20 weeks is sufficient. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve- yes, thin is a good word. I had looked at the one on BT and wasn't sure, so thanks. My goal is 2/3 swim weekly, 3bike and 3 run. That is attainable; I just gotta do it. Thanks for the mileage breakdown! Jim- thanks for your feedback on troika. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, I say go for it! I have not done a triathlon in ten years (2 sprints), and I signed up for a HIM July 15th. By signing up, it made me completely commit to the training. This is from someone with absolutely no training 4 months ago, unless you count sitting on the couch drinking beer at 300 pounds as training. |
