I've been using the mapmyride app to track and log workouts since before I started Tri's but I'm probably going to use a Christmas Amazon Gift card to get a Garmin forerunner 310xt (another side track... Trying to decide to go with either the Garmin or a Polar RCX3... but I think I know what everyone here will say lol) and then I'm thinking of using TrainingPeaks once I do get a GPS watch. -Nathan I have a Timex Global Trainer. It would appear from multiple reviews and feedback from everyone (And from looking at wrists at local events) that the Garmin 910 is probably the most preferred triathlon watch out there, but it's also really pricey (approx. $399). The TGT is only $150 (again you can find varying prices anywhere) and I won't lie and say the TGT is as good as the 910, but it does come close for less than half the price. Check out DC Rainmakers comparisons and reviews, that's a really good place to start. For training logs I have everything on Training Peaks since I upload all my workouts from my Timex watch, however I end up using this site more than anything because I'm on here more for the forums and such. TP definitely lets me dissect the data more and I'll look in depth at some things if the workout didn't go as planned, but for the most part I just upload it to here every day and try to put a comment in regarding what type of workout I did, how I felt, etc. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone, it's been a really busy Christmas season for me, so I haven't had a chance to check in. I spent about a week at my folks' house up in Raleigh, NC, and now I'm in TN to see a special someone...who also happens to be a triathlete. We just got in an hour swim workout nice and early this morning-felt slow and heavy after too much bad food over the Holidays, but I got the pool time in! We recently started seeing each other, but it's already great being with a fellow athlete: no explanations about diet, workout time, what HR/pace/lactate etc. mean. Also, she's a physical therapist, which could come in really handy come peak training time! In reference to the logging & data question, the 910XT is the hands-down the best triathlete watch, it's just expensive. I have the 310XT and love it: the only real difference is size and the ability to track distance in the pool or open water. If you don't really care about tracking swim distance, you can save a ton, like I did, and go with the 310XT. I log all my workouts here on BT, but Training Peaks is really nice. I also use Strava a good bit, just because they make really good run/bike apps for my iPhone, which I'll use on shorter workouts when data isn't so important. I'm going to start throwing together my training plan for IMChoo this week and next. I'm definitely ready to start getting back into a regular workout routine! 5:00 wake up this morning was tough, but triathlons don't finish themselves, right??? Once I get back this weekend and get settled into a more predictable routine, I'll be able to contribute a lot more. I hope everyone had a great New Year's! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan. Very nice bike, and clean garage floor. In all the 910xt discussion I forgot to mention something and it is important regarding thr HR strap for the 910. Garmin moved to a fabric strap and the "second generation" watch gave them trouble. Mine started acting up and periodically spiking when it shouldn't have and continually got worse. An internet search showed garmin would replace with their updated straps. They sent me one for free and it works perfect. The garmin folk mentioned the older plastic strap and the third gen cloth had better grounding. It works perfect. I had actually seen some people take a polar strap and use their garmin transmitter. You can tell which strap by the color. The latest has left/right markings and a gold color back. I agree with the 910 posters, even though I needed a new strap - I'm really happy with garmin products and garmin connect. Nelson |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan - congrats on your new bike - so shiny ![]() Nancy - I sound like a broken record around people when they talk about new bikes. FIT. FIT FIRST. If it doesn't fit, and is not comfortable, you'll hate it. Being new to the process, I would really go to a shop that knows their stuff. Not sure where in VT you are but I hear GREAT things about Fit Werx. http://fitwerx.com/ I would at least start there and THEN you can go find a bike (new OR used) that fits you ![]() Nelson - regarding the HR strap, DCR did an entry and recommends the POLAR strap (it fits the Garmin monitor). It's more comfortable and is more accurate. We bought one for my husband and he said it's been great http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007XCLU66/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_... HAPPY 2nd DAY of 2014 all! Got my butt to the pool! I'm 2 for 2 this year ![]() ![]() Have a great day all. |

I've used a Garmin 305 for the past 4 years, but it just died (the hard reset not working, either...). I also have a Garmin Edge 800 for the bike and a Forerunner 210 for running. I use the HRM mostly on the bike since it can be so variable running, but I will use it when I'm doing more intense running sessions. I'm all over the place with racing. I've gone with and without GPS, and with and without HRM. For uploading, I use both BT (so my peeps can track me) and TP (so I can manage my TSS over time). I also use Strava for the segment chasing, even though those intervals aren't anything like what I should be doing training-wise. |

I invariably hit it by accident, and then can't make it go away. I think if you just click somewhere else on the page it should go away. It did for me (on a Mac, running firefox) The Esc works for me. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a Garmin Forerunner 410 that I purchased about 6 months before triathlon was on my radar. I have the HRM (though the 'softstrap' that came with it is AWFUL and I have the scar to prove it) and the bike sensor. It provides me with plenty of data. Obviously, I'd like the swim data as well, but... I do use it for open water swimming just to determine my distance and time. I throw it in a ziploc bag, place that inside my Safer Swimmer floaty, and start swimming. By the way, for those of you who open water swim in areas with boats, etc., where visibility is important, I can't recommend that product enough. I thought it was just a 'fad' until I was at the lake with a group of swimmers and saw them coming back in from their longer (than me) swim. I could EASILY see the swimmers with the buoy, whereas the other swimmers with no buoy (but with fluorescent swim caps) were truly undetectable. The local news did a story about the tri club swimmers last fall, and interviewed the boaters on the lake and they said they really appreciated us investing in the buoy as it did make a huge difference in making us visible. Plus, when we swim point to point, I can put my phone, my Garmin, my car key and my flip flops in it. I'm down and out for the time being. My knee just isn't right. I have an appointment with the doctor IN TWO WEEKS (UGH). In the meantime, I'm getting a massage and I have an appointment with an exercise physiologist who I hope can help. Total bummer now that my motivation has been rekindled. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HIITS run done and my first swim of the New Year is in the bag too. Always have a hard time with a swim after a long time off. 10 days is too much for me!! Need to stay positive though! Nancy--total bummer on the knee. Makes me wonder if you have some muscle imbalance somewhere that is causing these things to crop up. I would have periodic injuries and it was all related to a anatomical leg length issue. Once I cleared that up and found a coach that wasn't killing me with too much volume things settled down quite a bit. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got runs in yesterday and today, so my running streak is still going- on day 40 now. I had to treadmill again today- it was -5F as a high for the day and snowing. No way I was running out on the roads! I got a lot more zen about it though, or just went a little bit slower and it felt much better than last time. Tomorrow, I meet with a swim coach to see if we can work together! I'm kind of excited about it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all-long day on the road for work today. Rain and wind made the driving even worse. Was able to get in an easy ride this morning on the trainer. Did an easy 1.5 mile run tonight to test out my left knee. Have not run since last Thursday when left knee pain cut my run short. It felt fine but I'm still going to my ortho appt tomorrow to get it checked out. Back in the pool tomorrow.....schedule has me hitting a little over 15,000 yards for the week which will be my biggest week in a LONG time. 6300 yards down with 3 swims to go. Going to try to stay up and watch Alabama/Oklahoma tonight. Roll Tide! |

I'm kind of excited about it. Most definitely a tough day to be a triathlete in New England. I was relegated to the treadmill as well. I think it took me longer to setup the TV than it did to do the workout. Has anyone tried Google Chromecast? Seems like a pretty good way to steam movies from the laptop to the HDTV. I don't have an HDMI out on my laptop so I had to use my Kindle. Wasn't too big of a deal once I figured it out. I can't wait for my daughter to go back to school so I can commandeer her cable box again. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It doesn't help that all the treadmills at the gym are way too close to the TVs, so you have to crane your neck to actually see anything. luckily I had a big window in front of me, and could watch the snow and blow outside. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry. Missing in Action. Eight hours ago I was in sunny Southern California, basking in the glow of a Spartan win in the Rose Bowl. Now back in Michigan with 12 degree weather and eight inches of snow in the last 12 hours. Talk about weather change. I am not a big tech guy. I log my workouts here and on a program called Raceday that my coach uses. I use an old Garmin 210? that works some times but not always. I use the power meter because my coach makes me....... I haven't trained in two days because of the travel. I have a lot of energy right now. Might try to burn some of it tomorrow morning. |

Luckily, that was as cold as it got for me last year. Where are you riding tomorrow? |

Having grown up in the Midwest, I run and ride in all sorts of temperatures. Even on my coldest runs (less than 0F ish), I wear an Underarmour Cold Gear Turtleneck and a long sleeve technical zipper top. I don't wear a coat because it makes me sweat. Sweat is the enemy of cold weather running. I also start into the wind so that it is at my back on the return. That way when you do sweat you're not as much of a popsicle. While it is probably overkill for 30F, you could wear a smartwool facemask as well. I've donned one of these for temps in the -30F wc and been fine for at least an hour. Wool is your friend in cold weather. Edited by SSMinnow 2014-01-03 7:29 AM |

One of my goals this spring is to do more OWS with my tri group. I barely did any but this winter I've made some friends (good job MBC) and I invited myself along come spring. I'm in the same boat as you (well, not IN the boat but you know what I mean). like anything else, practice, practice, practice. Right Randy? :D |

As a weaker, somewhat frightened swimmer, I usually am in the yellow zone to avoid a lot of the chaos and chop, but am rethinking that. What does the group think? I've gotten a lot more comfortable over time swimming with other folks in an OWS. I've found that as my swimming improves, especially my ability to hold a strong pace, I've gotten much more comfortable. When I first started, getting knocked in the face by a stray arm or foot, or getting pushed under, bothered me. But, now that I know that I can recover and swim hard when I need to, I'm less worried about swimming around others. As far as the yellow zone goes, it does seem to be unavoidable, but I think there are a lot of factors to consider, like the length of the swim, and your given pace. In a sprint, I usually don't have much time to consider water conditions, it's just a matter of going hard until the last buoy. In a HIM or IM, placement in the water does seem to matter more to me, especially since straying a little off course into flat water can add significant distance to the length of the swim. Overall, I think OWS is all about confidence that gets developed by a lot of time spent swimming. On the swimming note, I recently saw a video that goes through some common freestyle swimming mistakes; I thought it would be useful for those of us working on our technique: http://runoften.wordpress.com/2014/01/03/common-freestyle-swimming-... I got in a very cold 7 mile run this morning; I think it was about 15 degrees, cold enough that my toboggan was a little frozen where I had sweated under it. A hot shower and a cup of coffee felt great afterward, though! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good info on swimming! I got in 3600 yards this morning...glad its done...until tomorrow. Spin on the bike this evening. Just got back from the ortho. Good news on my left knee. No instability, xrays looked good so likely just a muscle imbalance that led to some pain. I had planned to try to put together a strength/core workout to do 2-3 times a week so now I have even more reason to do it. Ortho said that we build muscle cycling, running and swimming but we need to do exercises where the muscles work together "closed chained" exercises. Had to look it up so here is the definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_kinetic_chain_exercises Its great to have someone I can go to that is himself a triathlete....certainly an asset to out Tri Team. |

I agree with this statement assuming you meant a low of OWSing. I believe the mistake I've made the last two years in IM is not doing enough of it in a larger group. We have ample opportunities in Madison so I plan to change that this year. What is a tobaggon? in these parts, it is a sled! I can't imagine sweating under such a vehicle. |
