Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-05-28 2:04 PM Hey what do you think is worse? 1. Heat and humidity on race day? or 2. Monsoon on race day? Maybe I'll be the lone taker for heat and humidity. I'm pretty small (135 lbs) so I tend to do better than most in the heat. Bring it on! |

I break down heat and humidity in two different categories.
I can take humidity big time like with heat; it can be 95deg with 110% humidity and I am good, but if it was 85deg in direct sun I fry.
Rain I don’t care I just slow on corners.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm lucky enough to be training in the land of heat, humidity, and monsoons. Thursday I ran and it was upper 80's and 1 billion percent humidity. Today I rode in a monsoon. Typhoon season starts next week so I'll get even more wind and rain. Wind sucks. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Heat and humidity are killers. Rain and wind suck too. Let's hope we get a nice overcast day with little wind in the mid 60s for race day! Now that would be nice. Last year - hot....year before - wicked rain.....this year - perfect! These things go in cycles. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd much rather have rain than heat. I seem to die on the run (even stand alone runs) in the heat. I am going to try very hard over the next couple of months to adapt ![]() I did my first "over 100miler" of the season yesterday- and it was tough! Now if I was as fast as some of you guys out there I wouldn't have to stay out for so long! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-05-28 5:04 PM Hey what do you think is worse? 1. Heat and humidity on race day? or 2. Monsoon on race day? they both create situations where you have to adapt; quickly. I prefer heat/humidity. Adapting to the cold conditions a monsoon can cause is mentally exhausting for me. With heat/humidity, you can slow down, even walk to have your body cool off. get ice, drink more; IMO, it's easier to adapt to the day. With cold, wet, rainy conditions, very hard to warm up and emotionally, it can get pretty bad. The main problem with heat/humidty is slowing down and being OK with that...(for me). again, it's adapting. if your hot, you better slow down. with cold/rain, you just need to mentally over come that. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-05-31 7:46 AM Both heat and cold/rain change the dynamic quite a bit. As Cuse said, we just have to change our strategy. This is why I am philosophically against a nutrition or pacing/power program that is so structured that it's hard to change ouyt of it mid race. I'm not saying "don't have a strategy", but rather saying "be prepared to change the strategy". so key....have a core strategy, but be ready to change it on the fly. dont cram down gatorade if its cold, dont limit your intake if it is hot, just because its different to your formula.... this is where the value is in training in all conditions, and not flipping workouts around because its raining or too hot.... train in it all and understand how your body reacts to different conditions...know the feeling of not drinking enough or too much..... |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just out of curiosity how many of you will be racing LP using an aero helmet? I have been contemplating buying one but wonder if I will be roasting myself b/c of the lack of ventilation with those helmets. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DC see ya at Rev3. I had rough day last year, hoping for better this year. mcluvin, i'm a get through this thing and do the best I can. With that said, depending out your ability and goals I don't see how an areo helment is going to do that much. I do enjoy going by people who are all decked out with a top of the line bike, w/404's or 808's, fancy areo helment and the lasted team tri uni doing about 14 miles per hour. |

![]() Mcluvin22 - 2010-05-31 3:38 PM Just out of curiosity how many of you will be racing LP using an aero helmet? I have been contemplating buying one but wonder if I will be roasting myself b/c of the lack of ventilation with those helmets. I have an aero helmet, but I won't be using it. My experience is it's not as comfortable as my regular helmet, and I feel safer in my regular helmet. I've seen someone smack right into a deer, literally 20 feet in front of me, go head over heels and then slam their head into the pavement. He was fine (well at least his head was) because the helmet absorbed the impact and cracked. I wonder how that same incident would have played out with an Aero helmet? When I wear my LG Rocket or Limar Speed Demon, the whole back is open; and I wonder if the point hitting the ground might even twist my neck and do more damage. If it's a short TT-type race on a closed course, I'll use my Aero Helmet. But for screaming 50 MPH descents on open roads, it's not worth the risk for an added .2 MPH gain. Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We're driving back from LP, it was an amazing weekend for training and vacation. There was a 65000 acre forest fire in Quebec so it made for a very smoky ride today but all was great otherwise.I may be releasing a room at Northwoods tonight. I heard they have a 187 person wait list so if anyone is interested I could see if they'd allow me to transfer the room instead. It's around 245/night with a 5 night minimum, by far one of the best deals out there. Let me know if you want it, otherwise it will go to the wait list! |

A Ferrari and a Volvo Wagon both have to meet the same gov't safety standards. Which would you rather been in if you were to crash... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bobby, do what you like, however the implication that one helmet is safer than another based on your your "feelings" doesn't make it so. An Aero helmet is as safe as a standard road helmet. Your analogy is terrible as it's based on mass, not design. Period. Don't perpetuate a complete fabrication as fact. Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got in my first 100+ mile ride of the year. I was spot on. Schweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!! Four bottles of Gatorade, four bottles of water, 4 gels, 4 fig newtons and 2 granola bars (and a partridge in a pear tree). I felt fabulous at the end! I went with the "If it feels like work STOP DOING IT" philosophy and it treated me well. Averaged just over 15 mph which is fine with me-one short, flat, straight as an arrow section between Marathon, NY to just south of Syracuse. The rest was rolling hills with three relatively larger climbs, but nothing crazy. Heading to LP with Swishyskirt in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to it! |

How was the traffic? I have a 95 mile ride coming up on Saturday but I think I'm going to add the extra 5 so I can call it a hundo. Sounds way cooler than 95. Great job. |
