A Ferrari and a Volvo Wagon both have to meet the same gov't safety standards.  Which would you rather been in if you were to crash...

A Ferrari..........

Maybe its just a mid life crisis thing

bryancd - 2010-05-31 10:31 PM Bobby, do what you like, however the implication that one helmet is safer than another based on your your "feelings" doesn't make it so. An Aero helmet is as safe as a standard road helmet. Your analogy is terrible as it's based on mass, not design. Period. Don't perpetuate a complete fabrication as fact.

The anlalogy is not terrible.  Aero helmets (like high end sports cars) are built for Speed. My Limar Speed Demon Aero Helmet is much lighter than my Bell Giro.  My Limar Speed Demon helmet is also entirely open in the back.  When I wear that helmet, from my base of my neck to the top of the back of my skull is NOT covered by any protective material; just a strap.  On my Bell Giro helmet there is foam and a thick composite guard that goes right across the middle back of my skull.  Also, when looking at the front of the helmet that covers the forehead, there is considerably more foam padding on my Bell Giro.

So, for me, common sense alone tells me my Giro road helmet is safer.  And here is a memo from a Professor at the Bicycle Helmet Safety institute citing the potential dangers of teardrop-shaped Aero helmets:   http://www.bhsi.org/hurtmemo.htm

of all things to debate.

I could argue your mountain bike is safer than your tri-bike.

I think people using a full aero set up (tri-bike, wheels, tires, tubes, aero bars, aero position) with an aero helmet and those without an aero helmet are equally as safe.  In fact, our aero goodies are adding more risk than an aero helmet due to handling.  Like I said, I do understand why you would think otherwise, but see no reason to believe you are exposed to less risk than those who use an aero helmet.

moving on....I had some thoughts on sleeveless vs. full wetsuit for long swims, and wanted to get the opinion of those that have done IM/long (45 minutes plus) OW swims:

Mainly, the comfort of sleeveless due to less restriction in the shoulders....

Mcluvin22 - 2010-05-31 3:38 PM Just out of curiosity how many of you will be racing LP using an aero helmet? I have been contemplating buying one but wonder if I will be roasting myself b/c of the lack of ventilation with those helmets.

Since the safety aspects have been 'debated' I will note that aerohelmets are just as ventilated as a road helmet IMHO.  I'm no cooler or hotter wearing my Aerohelmet than my road helmet.  Unless you have one of the original ones, the aerohelmets have plenty of vents.

Oh, on my  long ride this weekend, I practiced staying in aero at 50+ mph.  It was a bit unnerving at first but so much fun.  So it looks like the Keene descent will be done in aero all the way.

I figure if my Blue can track through sweeping turns at 50+, it shouldnt' be a problem come training camp.

When the guy in front of me hit that deer, on a downhill, going around 30MPH, and his head hit the pavement, it was the bottom of the helmet that cracked and saved his life.  The bottom of the helmet right by the base of his skull.  Had he been wearing an aero helmet, I can't help but wonder the inherent likelihood that the helmet would have twisted, perhaps possibly ejecting of sliding off his head and exposing his skull or twisting his neck.  The SHELL OF THE INSIDE OF ALL HELMETS must meet the same CPSC requirmentsl; however, it is the design of the outside that may cause the head, neck or hlemet to twist.  Common sense tells you a long point hitting the pavement is not going to act as predictably as a round shape hitting the pavement.

PennState - 2010-06-01 9:09 AM Guys can I suggest that we get off the helmet side track and move back to discussing LP. Thanks

x2...

sleeveless vs. full wetsuit for long swims due to better shoudler mobility and less fatgiue caused by restricition of the full suit.

please discuss!  Appreciated!!

Well said Fred!  I've been resisting commenting on this but IMO I think aero helmets look dorky anyway

For the wetsuit thing cusetri it really is personal preference.  If your wetsuit fits properly and you have put it on properly then it shouldn't restrict shoulder movement
As a girlie without those strong muscly arms you guys have I LOVE my full armed wetsuit (OK I'm a wimp when it comes to cold water as well) and I don't find it restricts me at all.  Actually I love the fact that it makes my arms just a little bit bigger so I have more surface area to pull with!

I believe I am in the minority in prefering sleeveless.  I don't care if I can save a minute or two of 5 if I had a full-sleeve.  In fact, I debated wearing no wetsuit but that got vetoed by people with a wee bit more experience than me (read: everyone ), so I obliged & wore sleeveless.  Was totally fine.  I will say Jorge insists I would love a Helix.  But then again, he also believes this bike hater would love cyclocross.

If you don't mind a mediocre (at best) swimmer weighing in... I made the switch last year to full and love it. I was really concerned about the shoulder restriction and fatigue, particularly since I was just a year out from a broken shoulder with already restricted range of motion. I went with the Helix and can say it has zero shoulder restriction. It's pricey, but if that's a concern the suit is designed to minimize it. I was experiencing a lot of chafing in my sleeveless during 45+ min swims so I actually find the full to be more comfortable in general.

Hey all,

Interesting weekend for me.  Had a big dinner on Friday night and woke up groggy.. Headed out on my ride and baild after 2 hours of climbing I felt like CRAP and was going up Mt Wachusett. Slept the ENTIRE afternoon and a reasonable amount ant night.. Then I did a 1/2 Marry on Sunday and missed a PR by a little even on tired legs and still not feeling great.   I also didn't push.. The next three weeks are a 5.5 ride, 100 mile ride and a HIM, so.. should be ready for Placid.  A little discouraged by my speed on Sat, but not feeling well and doing 1500+ in 20ish mies was pretty tough

Sun- Did 80 miles then 1 hr run, hot and humid, wasnt completely gasses so I was happy, but I was tired.  (forgot hat, not good with no hair, hahaha)

Mon- 1.2 swim, followed by 90 min run, another very hot day...

One more big week then taper for Eagleman...

Heading to Lake Placid last weekend in June!!!

Since we are all sharing.....

Sat - Group training day - 1 hr swim, 90 mile ride, 6 mile run.....then beer.

Sun - 15 mile run in 80 degrees -- very painful and designed to simulate suffering if it is hot at LP

Mon - 5 mile of intervals on treadmill + 4000 yd swim.....then BBQ

Today - Rest.

Next Sunday - Hilly Rev3...first time I've ever done a HIM with no taper...should be interesting.

Then one week of training before Fireman Ironman Camp....for better or worse that should provide a good measure of where my fitness is really at.

Hey, what does everyone anticipate their bike speeds to be at Placid! I'm a TERRIBLE hill climber so I figure to go around 15-16 depending.. If I have a GREAT day, maybe 17, but who knows..

what about you?

Well, my goal is to come off the bike between 5:15 - 5:30, so that means 20-21 mph average.

We will see how that goes after the training camp in a couple of weeks.

Since I may (due to fear) have to walk that big downhill everyone is talking about, I am shooting for an 8 hour bike. Anything better will make me extremely happy to the point of possible tears

It's not so bad.. just don't stay too far right. The side of the road is a little bumpy, so stay a little more towards the middle.
