1.  What do I need to do before every ride?  Step by step would be helpful as I am not familiar with all of the terms (calibration, zeroing out, etc).

I don't do anything special.  If the temperature difference between inside and outside is significant I try to have the bike sit outside for 10-15 mins before heading out.  I know some people do a manual zero before starting but I never do.  I basically just start riding.  Since I'm not to worried about power numbers for the first bit while I warm up, I know an auto-zero should happen sometime in there.

Anytime you coast for 5-10 seconds it should do an auto-zero (which your Garmin considers "calibrating").  You won't get any feedback indicating this happens.

What the heck. It's only 4:30 am on a Saturday..... Yes, the garmin has 3 and 30. Excellent. Fred, by "play" I meant a little wiggling when moving the cassette back and forth (ie pulling away from and pushing toward the wheel)

Cassette question

1. I took the 12-27 off my aksiums.  There were two spacers at the bottom (i kept everything in order).  Put it on the DT Swiss without the spacers, screwed the ... cover? back on.  There was a tiny bit of play.  Took it back off, added one spacer, back on.  No play.   Did I do it right?

If everything is shifting ok, then yes, sounds like it.

I was up before 430am today too Chris...got in a fast 40 miler with my friend then ran to my son's soccer game...In my mind, I am a faster runner than I actually am now, barely made it in time for the kick off

Now off to play Laser Tag for 4 hours for the youngest's birthday!

tri808 - 2013-04-05 7:23 PM Couldn't get the quarq installed yesterday because my BB bearings are shot (not really surprised as they've been making some noise), so I'm going to have that changed out today, then the installation should be quick.  Spent about 3 hours last night sorting through our team kit order and individually packing everyone's order together.  Everything looks great (from Champion Systems).  Although the tri top I ordered seems to be made for someone with much narrower shoulders.  Still fits well and the fabric is very water repelant.  I splashed some water on it and it just bounced right off.

Got loaned a pair of tri shorts made by Champion for one swim, and was really impressed with them.

I bought a Champion tri top last year that was supposedly a "long" version and while it was very nice and comfortable, I looked like Faris.  The stuff just doesn't fit me right.

I ordered the long version of the tri top because of the reviews that it was short.  I think they addressed the issue and the standard length is probably much closer to what people expect from other tri tops, and this long version is just extra long.  It sits about 2-3 inches below my short waist line.  I'm fine with that since it won't really affect comfort and should ensure I don't get that sunburn line just above my waist when biking.

Here's how it compares against my Zoot Ultra tri top which I was using the last 2 seasons.  You can see it's a good 3 inches longer.  I think the long version was only supposed to be 1" longer than the standard length.

Fred D - 2013-04-06 7:09 AM  2.power numbers are quite erratic and 'spikey' for everyone if you don't use some sort of time averaging. I always used a 3sec average and a 30sec average. The 3 sec average was an estimate of my current power numbers and it smoothed things out much better. For power fields I would use 3sec, average and also normalized in a race setting. I think the 910 can do this.

Yup, 3s and 30s avg is what I use too.  Even the 3s one can jump around in some conditions, you'll get used to it.  I tend to pay more attention to the 30s number when riding in a steady state and if something changes (like starting up a climb) then I check the 3s numbers to keep things in check

It's perfectly normal to see the numbers all over the place.

I actually use instant power when doing general riding.  I've sort of gotten used to the spikes and can sort of average them out in my head.  I would actually recommend you ride using real time power for a few rides just so you can see for yourself how your power actually spikes when you do certain things like get out of the saddle.  It might change the way you think about how you ride.  Once you get a feel for that though, 3 sec power is probably what most people will revert back to.  Since I road race though, I tend to be more curious about instant power when making short hard accelerations that aren't so common in triathlon riding.

Well, home from 60 miles and sprockets are all still on the bike.  Yay me!   PT was interesting.   Would be better to mount the garmin on the bike for easier reference, but for now it's fine.  Did a ride with one of our classic climbs, a 5 mile gentle uphill, decided to do it as a "time trial" to see where my legs were, how the PT worked, etc.    And maybe convince my coach that I don't need to do another 20:00 test since it was 22:00 all out

Now I just need to figure out what to do with all of the info.   Certainly makes you think about when and where you are applying power, and when you can apply power where otherwise you might coast.

Haven't done a single workout all week due to being rather sick. Finally good enough today for a little something. Not quite 40 min on a run. Felt completely dead, but it was awesome being outside again. ~60 out today as well.

Nice!  I'd say for now just ride with it and keep an eye on it.  You've noticed some things already, there will be lots more.

I got in two hours on the trainer and a 35 min run today.  That's the most time I've spent on the bike in quite a while - I am looking forward to the chance to do that outside!  Sometime soon right.... right??  The forecast for the next week actually looks decent temperature wise so there is a chance....

Back in Edmonton. I did a indoor sprint this morning. Body still pretty tired but I managed to hold on for a 3rd place OA for women. Feeling more tired over the past 2-3 days compared to right after the race!

Thanks. Still amazing how I went from 4,000+ calories a day down to maybe 500-600 and had to work for even that. Food was just repulsive the first couple days. Still only eating as much as a small, fairly inactive person, but generally feel quite a bit better.

So like everyone has been outside enjoying the day, right? Little longer run today. Wish I could really take advantage as it was nicely up in the 50's today. Still way better than being stuck inside all day.

Glad you're feeling better.

Great 8 mile hilly run this morning with my good friend Annie.   Good Wildflower prep.   Then breakfast with the wife and drove about 1/2 hour to a local protected bay for a 2 mile swim.  I live about a mile from the ocean, but it was a little bumpy this morning, and swimming alone,,, so protected bay it was.

Also got a ton of things done I've been meaning to do for quite a while, cut down a small tree, organized tools in the garage, got some scuba gear worked on, even organized all the old bike parts and finally listed them for sale.

I got out for a 19 km run.  Did the first 10k with my wife and then continued on my own for the rest.  Sunny, +2 and almost no wind made for awesome run conditions.

Still cold in this part of EU. My *running* has been limited the past few days to that of spectator. Saw the Prague HM start/finish on Saturday then took the train up to Berlin. Turns out our hotel was on the 5k mark of the Berlin HM on Sunday morning. Had coffee and watched 30k runners go by before heading out into tourist land. I'm hoping all my walking is preserving some level of fitness as I've not been in the sneaks as much as I'd hoped.

it's been a nice trip. I've been traveling with my oldest nephew who's studying in London this semester and on Easter break. Munich/Prague/Berlin. Ive been to all 3 for work a number of times but never just to visit. The kid has worn me out though. Heading back tomorrow.

I took a self imposed two week vacation from BT but I'm back and caught up on the group.  Nice HIM race results and a bunny trophy.  Fun.  Its amazing how much free time you have when your not reading forums or even logging in to record time.

My whole race schedule (such that it was) is now on hold as Tina is interviewing for jobs back in PA.  So its kind of an unknown if we are going to be staying in AZ or moving.  The sequester has really messed up plans so now we are just trying to make it work (Tina works for the feds).

That being said, I've been having trouble with motivation to get the runs longer to run the HM later this month so I had already taken it off the schedule anyways.  They have a 10k but not sure I want to drive up there for a 10k.

TT didn't go nearly as planned.  Still trying to figure out what happened, but at the same time trying to put it behind me and focus on what's ahead.  I've got a killer 6 weeks ahead of me which will be the biggest chunk of training leading into Honu.
