No racing for me - tri season is done.

Good luck this weekend, Jayne!

And here is my RR from my DNF last weekend. Road rash is healing. It would probably heal faster if I didn't pick at it so much, haha. And I'm out of my crap mood about not finishing. On to the next race! Whenever that happens.

Bad day here, 5 Aussie soldiers killed in Afghanistan, I know it's not much compared to the US casualties but for a country of only 20 million it's a significant loss.

i'm very sorry to hear this david.  please please don't ever compare loss of life to the US or any other country.  one loss against these mofo's is one too many, no matter what country.

Yo!  It's early, but it's Wednesday!  Who's taking the opportunity to make us proud?  If you're racing, spill the details!

If you're not racing, let's talk about races other than M dot.  Are you considering one for 70.3 or 140.6? HITS? REV?  Challenge? why or why not?

I am headed out the door in a couple of hours to drive to my near-HIM (2km swim, 105km bike, 20km run).  Weather dudes are forecasting 34C which is about 94ish in foreignheit. My goal is to go slow and get through it.  Good luck to everyone else who is racing.   Unless my hotel has a computer terminal in the lobby, you won't hear from me until Tuesday.

Have fun Dan, relax in the swim then crush the rest! I'm thinking about doing the Singapore HIM, that's meant to be very hot and humid too!

The end of August is here.  Post 'em and give us the highlights!

For me, it was being able to bike in the heat (107F) one day and then 5 hours of pouring rain and 57F a few weeks later.  It's been quite a summer in Wisconsin.  I'm also pretty jazzed that the next month's volume will be about 5% of this one.Laughing

August's totals:
Bike:33h 27m 21s  - 600.1 Mi
Run:15h 03m 27s  - 98.1 Mi
Swim:17h 53m 17s  - 36558 Yd
Core Training:1h 00m
Yoga:2h 00m

I know it's a little late to be figuring this out, but ......

I'm sitting here writing my race plan for tomorrow morning and trying to figure out my nutrition.  I'm planning on having 2 waterbottles on the bike with heed in both of them. (this will be about 36 oz of water with the powdered heed mixed in).

Last year the swim took me 38 min, bike was 1:27, and I'm hoping to do the run in 1:08.

I've trained with gels and I tolerate them fine, but how many and how often?

The weather is shaping up to be good, overcast for most of the morning, temps in the 70 (with moderate humidity), and not much wind.

I'd take a gel shortly after getting on the bike and then again 10-15 min before T2.  Maybe something shortly before the race started too.

How much HEED per water bottle?  HEED is about 105 calories per scoop.  If your bottles have 4 scoops in them that is over 400 calories for under 3 hours of racing.  That should be more than plenty at roughly 135 cal per hour.  If you really feel like you need a gel, grab one half way through the run right before you put the hammer down........

So, I guess I agree with Fatty!

If you fueled on the bike you could get away with doing nothing on the run but water especially given those temps.  I would aim for between 30-40CHOs/hour and you 'll be fine.  If worried, carry a gel with you as back up.

I give you credit.  I think Heed tastes crap.

I thought only warm Heed tastes like crap.  Wow, John and Dino agreeing, and me agreeing with them both!

Jayne, why no separate water only bottle?  At the very least if your Heed starts to taste like crap, you can go, gel and water.   I have found, for me, that having water only, helps my stomach to settle down after a gulp of sport drink.  Maybe it's different with Heed/water combined?

Maybe a gel on the run at the halfway point but definitely water on the run.

Good luck to you!

David and Dan---- have great races!

I am sorry if I missed anyone.  I am running (noticed I didn't say "racing") Innocentthe Disney Half Marathon on Sunday.  Excited to ride Space Mountain again...hopefully get some more photos of Mickey and friends.  And still have a healthy left heel when all is done!

Christina----breathe!!!!!  You will be fine, IM day is such a great day and it goes by so fast!  Enjoy the lead up...no stressing!

Suzy- Another stellar month for you!  Have a wonderful relaxing weekend in Minoqua!

Congratulations, Tracy!

I give you credit.  I think Heed tastes crap.

Only thing I've ever tried is gatorade (too sugary and sticky), and Heed--which I still buy in the single serving packets @ 100 calories (26-27 CHOs) each.

Kim, I usually put water in my aero bottle and my Heed in the other, but I always drink the water first and then refill my aero bottle from the other with the Heed in it.  I don't like to reach for the one below my seat any more often than necessary.  I was thinking about using Heed in both and not worrying about any gel on the bike.

John, not a "wing it" kind of girl in the race. Sorry.  What's this talk of "picking up something on the bike course"?  I've never had a race that included an aid station on the bike ride.  Need to do a longer race before I'll see that happening.

So, I think I'll go with a gel before the race, the Heed in both bottles on the bike and then water on the run course with a gel in my pocket for insurance.

Oh, and my chain keeps coming off when I downshift going uphill.  I've had it to two different bike shops and it's still happening.  Probably just user error.  Is there some sort of mandatory shifting pattern I'm supposed to go through when I approach a hill and climb?  Tony?  Dino? Anyone?

Christina,  You are amazing and awesome.  You have trained for an Ironman with young kids at home and a husband that is less than stellar.  Good lord, you've done the hard work! You know how strong you are, so go out an show everyone!!!  Hugs.
