It was 5:00 pm, not bad humid but kinda humid. Some days it just doesn't go well. Shake it off and get back at it another day. For me doing a sprint tri I have a gel about 15 minutes or so before the swim and I drink something caloric on the bike. Then, I don't take anything other than water during the run. If you are going to use gels keep in mind that they generally take 30 minutes to start having an effect. Edited by MDHillSlug 2009-05-15 9:54 PM |

Pro 4343 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) Happy Saturday! I did my longest run ever, both in time and distance. Still working up towards 10k. Little did I realize that my regular Saturday route would take me through the family riders and walkers of a local charity event. It was fun to be part of the police escort for a while |

I noticed that the training plan goes by time, not distance. All of the plans I have used in the past always went by distance. Just curious... Also...has anyone ordered the DVD "The Distance" that they have on the home page? I though it might be a good gift. Have a great day. |

Pro 4343 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Girl Passing on Left (FULL) I have a metric century charity ride coming up in 3 weeks so it's time to change my biking focus over to distance and endurance. So, today I did a 40 mile ride. It was tough. The first 24 miles were into headwinds and also had lots of climbing; I averaged less than 12mph for this. After taking a break and having a snack I was finally getting a bit of a tailwind and my mph average climbed a lot (over 16mph). Along in here I was speeding along and realized I had a car just to my left pacing me; I look over and it's a cop. He has his window down and tells me that I need to be riding closer to the white line so that the cars can get by. I said "Yes sir" and he went on his way. This really irks me because this was not a very safe manoeuver for me and because I believe that he was wrong. It's my understanding that I'm entitled to take the entire lane if I so desire. I was not about to debate it with him right then |

It is way better to ride a straight line than to have to swerve around pockets of gravel or sewer grates. LOL- at first when you said it was a cop pacing you, I thought you were going to get a ticket for going too fast! Cops in Calgary have been known to use their radar on pathways to nab cyclists who are going over the 20km/h limit. I always chuckle but as a runner on those paths, I agree that a speedy cyclist should be on the road with the cars. |

I always chuckle but as a runner on those paths, I agree that a speedy cyclist should be on the road with the cars. I looked into the biking rules a bit more. According to what I found on the Washington Area Bicyclists Association regarding Maryland biking guidlines: "Ride with the flow of traffic as closely as practicable to the right side of roadway." and "Full lane use allowed when traveling at the normal speed of traffic, passing, preparing for a turn, avoiding hazards, traveling in a lane too narrow to share and avoiding a mandatory turn lane" I could interpret this to mean that since I was going slower than traffic that I was supposed to be as far right as practical, as the cop was saying. Alternatively, I could probably argue that the lane was too narrow to be shared and that I had the right to the lane. It's not terribly clear to me. |
