All of you are such an inspiration to me.  I draw on ya'lls strength when I am out training.  This morning, for instance.  For the past month, I have been running consistently, but seem to have had a mental block about distance and usually found myself doing walk breaks before I got to a 1.75 miles.  I know it was mental and I would just quit running and walk becasue I knew I could.  I was ready for a break-through.

As I was running this morning, I was thinking about all the race reports and posts from this weekend and the mental and physical effort you all put into it.  John, running a half marathon up and down canyon walls in the heat in a HIM, Doug   working through a side stitch, Suzy getting blown off her bike and getting back up, Tony not spazing in T1, BigReub and his swimming - everyone, everyday.  So I gave myself permission to quit on the run again - just not today!  I am happy to report that I had a run breakthrough and ran a personal best 2.75 miles without a walk break and know that I can do more next week and the week after.

Thanks for being there for me!  You all are my training family!  SWBKRUN MG is the best!

-Andy

I love breakthrough moments.  They make all the sweat and toil worthwhile!  Here is to 3m tomorrow.

Go Team

I am also happy to report, I didn't fall using my aerobars this morning.  Of course, I was on the trainer.  Had a great run off the bike too.  What a great day and its only 10am CST!

OH ladies and gentlemen. I am tired. My 4 year old was up from around 3am until I got up for work at 5:30am. Said she couldn't sleep. My lord, I could fall asleep at my keyboard right now. HTFU I know. Have a dentist appt today, so no lunch run today. Softball tonight. Day off tomorrow, Canada Day.

Nice work Andy...Like Barry said, as the runnners of the group... Barry and I know its gets easier.Cool   Umm no it doesn't. It gets tolerable.

That is what I like about the tri lifestyle - you can go play with different groups of people - I have a 750m open water swim race on Saturday (Followed by a sprint on Sunday).  Some of the people there will be triathletes, but many won't!  I get to push myself in all sorts of different areas!

So I went to get an aero fit last week at the LBS and ended up getting a new saddle as well (Profile Design Tri Saddle).  The guy raised my seat by almost 3 inches and put in a new handlebar stem(?) to shorten the reach.  It's like riding a different bike now.  Muscle activation seems to be different.  Any one else experience anything like this?

Yeah.  3 inches is a huge difference.  You'll notice a huge difference with a high cadence and this new position too.  You're gonna feel great about the run and prolly run faster off the bike.  There is a whole science to bike fit.  I've had the pro fit done with video and motion tracking.  This makes certain that your body maintains the ideal position while you ride.  Crazy stuff to think there is so much science to a bike fit.

Here's too much information about bike fit from a very reputable person - Tom Demerly of Bikesport in Michigan:

I bought my bike from a buddy who is hardcore triguy. He and I are the same size, so thought no problem. When I threw it downstairs on the trainer for the 1st few times, the 'gentlemen' hurt like a biatch!!! I thought there is no way I can ride this. So I changed out the seat with an old MTB seat. no go. When I went in to get the bike fitted, the guy pulled out the spacers on the stem and put them underneath the stem. The guy before me had the bars way down for his aero comfort. Once the spacers were put under the stem, world of difference. Like you said, it was like a new bike.

Are you using your roadbike and making it more aero?  I am wondering how a more "aero" fit will work on longer ROAD rides not in the aerobars.

Yes - I have clip on bars (Scotts).  I am wondering the same thing.  I did notice that my neck and upper back didn't hurt after the last couple of rides like it did somtimes before.  Perhaps I was reaching too much in the upright position too...

Andy - great job on that run!   That is such a big deal.  This milestone will have a bigger impact than the next ones.  For example, I remember running certain distances for the first time and feeling proud of them, but they don't compare to the frist non-stop 5K.  It's like you said, once you do that you realize anything is possible.  5 miles watch out, here you come!!!

I also had my road bike adjusted for a more aero fitting like you described.  Big difference and yes it is like learning to ride all over again, but in a good way.  I don't have any problems doing long road rides out of the aero bars because with the new fitting you no longer feel like a human parachute.  A good way to take advantage of the aero fitting without being on the aero bars is to ride in the drops.  I find myself spending lots of time there because it makes me lower without adding the stress and weight to my shoulders that aero bars do.  Good variety for body positioning on long rides.  I'll bet you'll feel the difference the most in your glutes, hamstrings and butt.  Good difference though.

Tony- go get em on the bike!   You'll do grrrrreat!

I'm not going to be posting very frequently for a while.  We are driving out to Kansas to see my family. I am doing a 10K on the 4th with my 13 year old nephew.  He runs cross country and has practice for an hour and a half everyday. The coach has the team on heart rate monitors and tempo and interval runs.  He says things to me like, "we're only allowed to race 2 miles but I slow down for longer distances.  I can only run a 6:30min/mile on the long runs Aunt Tracy."  Can you say butt waxing for Aunt Tracy?!!?

Andy, nice job on the run.  This endurance stuff has taught me one thing and you all confirm it - it's often our brains that are weaker than our bodies.  My breaking point was 2 miles.  Once I got passed that 13.1 was no problem.
I use this group the same way - when I'm hurting I'm thinking to myself "Andy's hurting too, but he's still going! MOVE YOUR !"

And not to be mean, but I would pay cash money to see someone fall over while on a trainer.  I'm LMAO just thinking about it!

Damn.  I'm breathing hard just thinking about it.

There's a kid that graduated from here and turned in a couple sub 4 minutes miles in college.  Watching him run...it's insane.  He looks like he's in cruise control and like he could do it all day.

To break through my 3 mile mental barrier, I asked my neighbor to go for a run. She is a long time runner. We went out for 4 miles. I couldn't give up and haven't looked back.

Reub have ever ridden rollers? I have watched lots of people crash off of them

BTW: We are at Myrtle Beach and about to head out to the sand.

Have a good trip Tracy....the Jayhawks going to get thai'ed up? Have fun 'racing' your nephew.

And yes Reuben I agree... This sport is so mental. Get past that and your body can do so much more than you expect. Ask John about doing a 1/2. just keeping moving!!

Who fell off the trainer? Suzy or John? If its the later, then totally expected.

it was great.  my trainer is in the garage next to the beer fridge.  i put my ipod on top of the fridge, get on the bike then reach for the ipod.  like the third or fourth time on the trainer i went to reach for it but forgot i moved the trainer out about a foot more than normal.  you can figure the rest out.  damn i wish i had that on video.
