I sincerely hope everybody in the quake regions is okay!  I've been thinking about our MG buddies and other friends all day.  My good friend in Hawaii says she's totally fine and didn't get too many waves.  Lots of prayers going out there.

John - Thanks for the tip!  I've heard that's helpful, but glad I know for sure now!

If I hadn't already planned the doctor's appointment today, I definitely would have after my swim today.  My knee was killing me in the pool.  Anyway, the doctor couldn't get me in until 4:45pm, so by the time I got out with a referral for an orthopedic doctor, it was too late to try and make an appointment.  So, it'll have to wait 'til Monday to try to make an appointment.  Ugh.  He gave me two possible options it could be: patello-femoral syndrome or chrondromalacia patella.  Still looking those up, but he basically said he thinks my knee isn't tracking right.  I'm lucky that I got a doctor who used to be a marathoner, so he at least knew what he was talking about.  He said for now, I can run if I think it's not hurting too bad.  I think I'll bag my run for today and Sunday to see if I can get in Monday.  I hate injuries.  A lot.

I battled something like this during IM training last year... Stemmed from bike fit, I believe. It would come and go, and literally I could not run at some point, and then a few minutes later I'd be fine. It was a tracking issue, and if the patella wasn't tracking right I was in pain. The PT with whom I was working (bike guy who works with TONS of cyclists and lots of triathletes as well) taped it a few times to help ease the immediate pain. I wouldn't keep it taped for too long, though, as it would start to cause other pains. He had me icing it immediately post activity, using topical arnica, Ibuprofin, and lots of stretching. I've seen exercises that can help, depending on the cause. Mine, as I said, was bike fit (we think) and older knees -- my knees actually crackle when I go up and down stairs anymore. Anyway, I didn't have full-blown chrondomalacia or PF syndrome, he mostly called it an irritation. If it flared up during a run, I could stretch and shake it out, re-track the patella, and be fine usually... Oh yeah, I also would loosen up the patella before workouts (move it up, down, side to side).

Keep us posted on your diagnosis and treatment and I hope it clears up sooner rather than later!

Still thinking of our Japan friends... every time I see footage I just get a sick feeling in my stomach.

I am hoping Dan and his family are ok now! It is awful looking at the videos of the devastation in Japan.

Erica, it sounds like you have the right idea not to run until after the weekend.  I follow the rule if it hurts, don't do it. It can be very frustrating but that feeling is temporary, and better for the body in the long run.

Update:  Bethany's ship docked, they let everyone off, and she's on her way home - 6 or 7 hours drive.  Big sigh of relief here.....still saying prayers for the rest of the people waiting for news.

BTW, if you're watching the news, they're showing pictures of the Santa Cruz harbor - that's our closest beach, 30 minutes or so from here.  Did an oly there in September.

good news!!!

but... we're not out of the woods yet.  what i'm going to need you to do is go get her camera.  then get all the pics of her 11 sorority sisters on spring break and email them to me.  i'll review them and let you know what i think.  don't delay.  this is very important.

You're being really wise and will thank yourself later.  I would venture a guess that no one on all of BT likes injuries.  It's all about how you deal with them when one arises...and then how you think about avoiding getting another one post healing.  All obvious statements, but sometimes you've got to state the obvious.  Let that sink in to all MG'ers....and you know who you are

This made me think about the seat on your bike...didn't you change your seat recently to Ryan's old seat or something like that?  Did the pain start before or after that change.  If after, could your position have changed with the new seat?

Holy cow...I never even realized this.  I can't believe none of us did!  It very well could be the reason because I changed it last Monday and my knee started hurting on Wednesday!

Ryan and I are going to change my saddle back tomorrow to my old one for my ride, and then maybe I can convince him to bring me in to our LBS to look for a new one and get properly fitted.  THANKS!!!  You're awesome!

I continue to be so saddened by the state of things in Japan. Was just catching up on stories on the NYTimes website, and am pulling this from an article today. Sendai is where Dan is living, or near where he is living. I wish we could hear from him but even if he is safe and sound, I know it could be a very long time before there is power or internet access.

Farther north, aerial photos showed floodwaters receding from the runways at the airport in Sendai, perhaps the hardest hit of the coastal cities.

Military units were in Sendai on Saturday, working at evacuation shelters or helping search-and-rescue teams. Sendai’s Web site, posted in Tokyo because much of the north was still without electricity, recorded a grim list of the toll: 1.4 million homes in the city without electricity, and 500,000 homes without water. At a school turned refugee center, Nakano Elementary School, 350 people were lifted out by a Self-Defense Forces helicopter, and 400 people in Arahama Elementary School were in the process of being plucked out by helicopters.

“The rescue is going on through the night, of course,” Michael Tonge, a teacher from Britain, said early Sunday morning from his home in Sendai.

Mr. Tonge said many people in Sendai were still without power, although his home had not lost electricity. “The government is telling people not to use it too much as they need the power to help bring the nuclear reactor under control,” he said.

No buildings had collapsed in his neighborhood, Mr. Tonge said, and people were not panicking — typical of a nation accustomed to order and schooled to stay calm and constructive.

“The few shops open have people queuing nicely,” he said, “with no pushing or fighting or anything.” He said he hoped the earthquake would not come to be known as the “Sendai quake.”

“I haven’t heard it being called the Sendai quake here, but if that’s what people are calling it, then that is unfortunate,” said Mr. Tonge, who lives there with his wife, Yuka, and their 3-year-old daughter, Aoi. “This is a beautiful city with nice people. A great place to live.”

The disaster in Japan is very sad and  tragic...I hope Dan's family is ok. I can't believe the devastation. The nuclear issue is very concerning.
