Wait until you guy's do an IM and you get the pleasure of experiencing a 3 week taper 8-)

The mind does funny things after you have trained your A off for 3 months and then basically do very little for three weeks!!!!

I'm gonna have to find me a good sports psychologist next July when I'm tapering for my first Ironman.  THREE WEEK TAPER, my GOD that just sounds like 21 days of torture.

Question: To help deal with Taper madness, can one throw in some extra slow & ez swims?  I'm thinking perhaps this may promote Recovery and blow off some steam without blowing your taper??

The "plan" I'm on (found in a back issue of "Triathlete" I think) has a 45 mile ride and 8 mile run for the weekend and lower intensity swim/bike/run workouts thru next Thursday. This is my first HIM and I've averaged a mere 6 or so hours of training a week this year, so I'm totally winging it.

Reading your plans, I'm wondering if I should lay low this weekend...Getting a bit twitchy thinking about it.

Hey - if the training plans seems to be working for you, why switch now? Everybody is doing slightly different stuff. As a coach, I often think people taper too much. Just use good judgement, and base it on how you "feel". Good luck!

No taper here.  Looking at my longer range plans and what I have going on for the Vineman full on August 1st, I've decided that I need to train this weekend (17 mile run and 80-85 mile bike) and use Eagleman as a good tempo day.

I like the looks of that latest weather forecast Laughing

I have realized over the past three years that if I taper too late like only the week before I run into the taper blues too close to the race and fell like crap the morning of. With the two week taper my swim coach (also a pro-triathlete) recommended, I get all the sluggishness, lethargy, depression, loss of appetite etc this week (lucky me) and then the fresh, crispy, and energized feeling next week leading up to Sunday. This week is a semi taper with intense workouts but just a little bit shorter. She, that is my coach, said though that if I feel like crap (which I should) I can tone down the workout. Next week is more just shorter sprints in the pool, a moderate swim, a tempo bike ride, and a nice brick workout early on in the week. This is the last year I train without a plan! I think next time I will definitely invest in full membership on BT and a good intensive training plan that they offer.

Depends on the individual.  Two weeks ago I rode 52 on both Sat. and Sun. (same course, just changed bikes) and then raced a 5k on Monday morning.  Legs were tired as hell and even during my warm up I was thinking "What the hell are you thinking."

I ran the 5k only 11 seconds slower than my all time PR.

Yeah, that is a shorter race, but it was on totally cooked legs.  But you never know what can happen until you try!

I've been winging my training this year, so I suppose I'll wing taper, too! I've sort of started turning down the volume, but keeping a little bit of speed in my workouts. I'll just make sure I get enough rest/recovery to feel fresh by next weekend.

I was just reading the Eagleman e-mail, and as far as PARKING ... we park in the surrounding neighborhood?  So 2,000+ people just park in front of houses?

PennState - 2009-06-04 7:55 AM Bob, there is a parking lot in the park as well. They let you park on the grass. It's pretty busy, but there are places to park.

Not necessarily.  Last year they did not allow us to park there because of the soggy ground.  We were required to park in the neighborhood.

There is plenty of parking along the streets.  Not a big deal.  And since you rack the bike the night before, you don't have to worry about rolling it to the transition early in the morning.

Great advice, as usual, all around. No reason to overthink this whole thing - stick with a plan and no excuses...

Thanks.

At least it happened now while there's still time to do something about it, rather than on raceday.  That does suck though.

Don't get too obsessed about the race right now, it's wasted energy.  In the end it's just another race.

I did a quick look and I haven't found any live data for the closest buoy.  I have no idea how close it is really.  But the temps seem to be about the norm for the Choptank so far for 2009:

Choptank Conditions

Whether it's right or not, it doesn't change anything for our race today.  Even on race day, all it means is yes/no on the wetsuit.  Either way you are doing the race.

The weather also at this point means very little.
